boilers depending upon the load pull in the 7 Steam line and the velocity of steam through an orificed plate within the'steam header of the boiler plant.
It is an object of this invention to provide a steam controlled regulator for a boiler plantadapted to automatically operate a valve which can be connected to control driving stokers, the draft to fans, the inlet of boiler feed water, or other functions.
It is also an'object of the invention to provide a regulator mechanism adapted to be governed by the load pull in a steam header.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve control mechanism adapted to be connected with a'steam header on opposite sidesof an orificed plate disposed transversely within said header to cause automatic operation of a valve depending upon the loadpull in the steamheader.
It is a further object of this inven-' tion to provide a valve regulator wherein a normally balanced mechanism is connected with a control valve to actuate the same when the mechanism is thrown out ofbalance by the shifting of fluids caused: by the velocity of steam through an orificed plate in a steam line.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a. regulating device fora boiler plant adapted to be actuated depending upon the load pull in the steamheaderto cause operation of a control valve which may be connected to steam inlet pipes, to
' draft fans, to turbines, to driving stokers, to boiler feed water inlet pipes, or to other mechanism to govern the same.
()ther and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown on the drawings: The reference numeral 1 indicates a supporting frame having a pair of oppositely disposed horizontal side angle bars 2 secured thereto. Rigidly secured on the top flanges of the frame side bars 2 are two plates 3 having transverse grooves 4 therein. Resting in the grooves lof the frame plates 23 are the knife edge portions 5 of a shaft 6. Secured to the shaft 6 is a balance beam 7. Securely mounted on one end of the balance beam 7 is an upwardly projecting upper cylinder or receptacle 8. lvlounted on the opposite end of the balance beam 7 is a down wardly projecting lower cylinder or receptacle 9 which is filled with mercury and is connected with the upper cylinder 8 by means of a small pipe 10 as illustrated in Figure 1. Connected to the balance beam 7 near the cylinder 8 is the lower end of a heavycoiled spring 11, the other end of which is connected to a screwbolt 12 adjustably engaged in a bracket 13 supported on the. top of the supporting frame 1.
The spring 11 may be tensioned by adjustment of the screw bolt'12 and acts to hold the balance beam 7 in a balanced adjustment.
Secured to the shaft 6 is one end of a yoke 14. The yoke '14 supports a feed screw 15 adapted to be turned by a knurled head 16 to cause a block 17 to travel on the feed screw. Pivotally connected to the adjustable block 17 is the upperend of a connecting rod or link 18, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to a block 19 engaged on a feed screw 20 supported in a lower yoke 21. One end of the yoke 21 is pivotally connected to the supporting frame 1. Piv
otally connected to the lower yoke 21 is the upper end of a connecting rod 22 having a turnbuckle 23 connected therein. Theconnecting rod 22 is connected to a control valve 24 which may be connected in a boiler feed water pipe, ina fan draft pipe,in the steam supply pipe of a turbine, or connected with the driving stokers of a boiler plant as preferred.
Connected to the top of the upper cylinder 8 is one end of a pipe having a pipe coil 26 connected therein. The other end of the pipe 25 has connected therein an emergency valve 27, a condenser 27 and a second valve 27 A pitot tube 28 is connected to the valve 27. The pitot tube 28 is inserted into a steam line pipe or steam header 29 on the lower pressure side of an orifice plate or baflie member 30 having an orifice 31 therein. Connected to the up-' per end of the lower cylinder 9 isone end of a pipe 32 having a pipe coil 33 connected therein. The other end of the pipe- 32 has connected therein a condenser 34 and emergency valves 34 which are arranged in a manner similar to the arrangement of the condenser 27 and the valves 27 and 27". A pitot tube 85 is connected with one of the valves 34 and projects into the steam header 29 on the high pressure side of the passage contacts the baffle or orifice plate 30 thereby partially obstructing'the flow of steam setting up a differential or, velocity pressure within the steam header on the highpressure side of the orifice plate causing'condensation of some of the steam. The condensed steam is forced through the pitot tube 85, through the valves 34 and thecondenser .34 and then through the pipe 32 and the coil 33 into the top-of themercurycylinder 9. When there is no pressure in the steam header the cylinder 9 is in balance with the cylinder 8. With the valve 24 connected in the feed water pipe of a boiler plant the increase in the load pull in the steam header also causes increase in the velocity of the steam through the orifice plate 30, thereby causing operationof the regulator mechanism as hereinbefore described and opening of the control valve 24. Additional water is thus permitted to enter the boiler. As the load pull in the steam header drops off the regulator automatically acts to pgroportionately close thecontrol valve 24 to regulate the supply of water.v
When there is noload pull in the steam header the mercury from the upper cylinder 8 flows back into the lower cylinder 9 thereby causing the balance beam to swing back into a balanced position due to the increased weight of the cylinder 9 and the actlon ofvthe coiled spring 11.
The pipe coils 26 and 33 are provided to afford sufficient resiliency in the pipe lines to permit the balance beam to be operated. The adjustable screw block mechanisms are provided for the purpose of permitting proper adjustment of the control valve.
Thecontrol valve 24 may be positioned to govern. turbines, boiler stokers, draft fans, or other mechanisms which may be related to a boiler plant and are to be automatically operated depending upon the consumption of steam orload pull in the boiler steam header. .7
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of -this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art. a
I claim as my. invention:
1. A regulator of the class described comprising a frame, a shaft, knife edgesformed .onsaid shaft, resting on said frame, a balance beam mounted on said shaft, cylinders supported on theends of said balance beam,
a pipe connecting said cylinders, adjustable fresillent means connected to said balance 1 beam and to said frame to hold the balance beam in a balanced position, a pipe connecting said cylinders, a second pipe connected to oneof said cylinders, a pipe coil connected intermediate the ends of said connected to the end of said third pipe,
an upper yoke secured to said shaft, a feed screw supported thereon, a; block on said feed screw, a lower yoke pivotally supported on said frame, afeed screw therein, a block on said feed screw, a connecting rod pivoted to said blocks, a control means, and a member connecting the control means with said lower yoke to cause operation of the control means when the regulator is operated.
2. The combination with a boiler steam header and a boiler feed water control valve, of an apertured plate secured in said steam header for the purpose of producing a velocity pressure therein, pitot tubes projecting into the steam header on opposite sides of the apertured plate, a balance mechanism, a lower receptacle secured on said balance mechanism containing Inercury, an upper receptacle secured on said balance mechanism containing water, a pipe connecting said receptacles, a second pipe connecting said upper receptacle with the pitot tube on the lower pressure side of said apertured plate, a third pipe connectcreases in the steam header and causes a tipping of the balance mechanism due to condensed steam from the high pressure side of the steam header flowing into the lower receptacle to force mercury therefrom into the upper receptacle and water from the upper receptacle into the low pressure side or" said steam header.-
