G. c. RAMSEY FIRE ALARM MIM-f Flled May 19, 1925 ,F l 1 c grs/undo@ Patented Aug. 31,V 192.6.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GBOVEB CARLO RAJWSEY, F GASTONIA, NORTH CABOLD'TA.
FIRE
i f' v application alsa xav 19, 1925. serial no. erase.
'Ihis invention relates to electric fire alarms and more particularly to alarms of `that class which are automatically set into operation by the heatof a fire.
l In some of its aspects, the present invention may be considered a further development of that set forth in my prior Patent, No. 1,331,277, dated February 17 1920, in that I preferably employ a similar struclO ture as part of my present apparatus.
In my said prior` patent, I have illustrated and described a housing for an automatic'sprinkler head, such housin having a Wall of combustible material suc as eell luloid, adapted to become quickly ignited in the event of lire, and by the heat of its combustion, to release the automatic s rinkler head. In the present invention, utilize this same housing to operate an electric tire alarm.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 isa vertical sectional view throu h my improved apparatus, showing also t e circuit connections; and
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the Aline 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawin in detail, my improved housing or sprin ler head chamber, above referred to, comprises a body 1,
made of sheet or cast metal, and having one flat side in which is formed a slot 2, to receive the water pipe. One end of the body may be beveled as indicated at 4, and the side opposite the slot 2 is arched or rounded, as shown at 3. At each side of the flat or base portion are provided a pair of spaced 40 flanged lmembers 5, constituting between them a slot or groove, as clearly shown in Figure 2. Into these slots or grooves are inserted the longitudinal edges of an archshaped relatively rigidsheet 6, such sheet 5 fitting within and conforming to the archshaped portion 3 Vof the bo y and being formed of Celluloid, paper, or lother readily combustible material. The housin above describedl is preferably mounted 5 against a wall or partition A within the compartment to be rotected. Mounted on the opposite side of t is partition is a switch box B containing the circuit closer now to be described. This circuit closer consists u of a leaf spring 7, rigidly secured at one end to an insulated screw or. bolt 8. Near 'the free end of the spring 7 is mounted a contact point 9. This is urged by the spring into engagement with an insulated screw or post 10. When the contacts 9 and 10 are in engagement, an electric circuit will be closed including the wires 11 and 12, battery 13, and suitable signaling devices, such as a bell 14 and lamp'15. These latter may be located at any desired point, or, if preferred, they may be substituted by a suitable relay. As shown in the draw` ing, the contacts 9 and 1() are normally held apart, and the spring 7 under tension by means of a link or wire 16 having one end in engagement with the spring 7 and the other end attached to and sup orted by the arched combustible sheet 6, t e link 16 extending through an opening 17 in the partition A. T5
Upon the occurrence of ire, the sheet 6 will readily ignite and burn, thus destroying the support for the link 16, whereupon the s ring 7 will straighten out, thus bringing t e contacts 9.and 10 together, and operating the signal devices.
`An automatic sprinkler head 18 secured to a water pipe 19, as shown in dotted lines, may or may not be used in connection with the circuit closer and signals. If an automatic sprinkler head is emplo ed, it should be noted lthat the s rinkler cad and the circuit closer are bot operated by the same element, namely, the Celluloid sheet.
What I claim is p 9o 1. The combination with a circuit closer biased toward closed position, of a chamber having a wallv of celluloid, a partition between said chamber and circuit closer, and a link extending through an openin 95 in said partition, said link being supporte at one end on said wall, and at its other end engaging said circuit closer to hold it open.
2. The combination with a circuit closer 100- biased toward closed position, of a chamber adjacent thereto and comprising a base, and a flat sheet of celluloid or the like, supported at its opposite edges on said base, and bent into the form of an arch, and 105 means supported by said sheet for normally holding said circuit closer open.
3. The combination with a circuit closer biased toward closed position, of a chaml ber adjacent thereto comprising a base, and 110 oonisng of flut sheet of to bow shape, the opposite o, met bolug sugportecl on said 1o @ucl o the said chamber shoot being open, an auto- @ad mounte in said Chamto be operated by the heat of combustion of said sheet, and means Supported by said sheet for normally holding Said circuit closer open,
In testlmony whereof I ax my slgnature.
GROVER CARLO RAMSEY.
