ELECTRIC CIGAR-LIGHTER.

To all whom z't-may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. CUNo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meriden, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented a new and use: ful Electric Cigar-Lighter, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to a device intended to be used on automobiles. Here great difliculty is frequently found in lighting a cigar by the ordinary electrical devices on account of the wind which frequently tends to so cool off the device as to make it inoperative. Wit the ordinary device the igniting element s so exposed that there is danger of etti fire 'toclothing, blankets, or. upholstery by having the lgniter come in contact therewith.

To avoid these difficulties, I have devised a simple and inexpensive construction, which I have illustrated in its preferred form.

In the form shown, 5 is a socket having a shank 6 into which lead the usual cord connectors. 7 is the usual contact by which electrical connection may be established with the translating device, which, in this instance," is an igniter for lighting cigars, etc. The igniter is made removable from the socket 5 and comprises the sleeve 9 surrounding a suitable insulation in which may be mounted the resistance wire 8, which is toconstitute the igniting or lighting means. The outer end of the socket 5 is provided with one or more angular slots, for example, ordinary bayonet slots Mounted on the side of the igniter sleeve 9 are suitable lugs 11, designed to look into the angular. ends of said slots, for example, as shown in Fig. 1, The shield portion comprises the outer protector flange 13 and a contracted neck or sleeve 14, which latter is adapted to slide onto the outside of the socket '5. At the inside of said sleeve 14 are one or more lugs 15, which are also adapted to look into the aforesaid angular slots, the angular ends of said slots being suitable to receive both sets Specification of Letters Patent.

of lugs 11 and 15. In the preferred form, the construction is such that the lug 15 may be turned into position back of the lug 11. The flange 15 should be suitable to protect the igniter wire 8 against the wind and also against being damaged by being dropped. Again, the cord serves to protect the wire 8 so that the same will not come in contact with the clothing, robes or upholstery and setting fire to or burning the same.

Although the guard is detachable from the socket so that the device can be used without the guard, for instance, for lighting a pipe, it will be obvious that the shape and proportion of the guard with relation to the igniter may permit the device to be used in lighting some pipes without removing the guard.

I claim:

1. An electric cigar lighter comprising a socket having a bayonet slot, an igniter having a pin fitting in said slot and an ash guard having a projection extending into said slot beside said pin.

2. A holder and guard for the purposes described, comprising a socket having an angular slot in its end, a translating device slidable into said socket and having a lug on its side arranged to be locked into said angular slot, and a guard slidable onto said socket and having a lug at its inner side also arranged to be locked into said angular socket.

3. A holder and guard for the purposes described, comprising a socket having an angular slot in its end, a translating device slidable into said socket and having a lug on its side arranged to be locked into said angular slot, and a guard slidable onto said socket and having a lug at its inner side also arranged to be locked into said angular socket, the width of the angular portion of the said slot being suflicient to receive both of said lugs with one behind the other.

said translating device being surrounded by a sleeve slidably fitting within said socket, said sleeve having a projection arranged to interlock with said angular slot to hold said translating device in operative position with the contacts in engagement, a guard including a flanged guard portion and a contracted cylindrical portion arranged to slide on the outer side of the aforesaid socket With a lug on the inner side of said contracted portion arranged to interlock in the angular slotted portion of the socket.

5(A holder and guard for the purposes described, comprising a socket having a plurality of angular slots in its end, a translating device slidably fitting Within said socket and having a lug arranged to be locked into one of said slots and a guard slidably fitting on the outside of said socket and having a lug arranged to be locked into one of said slots.

6. In a holder and guardfor the purposes described a socket having an angular slot in its end, a translating devicemounted Within said socket and exposed at the outer end thereof, a guard mounted on the outside of said socket and projecting beyond the outer end of said translating device to protect the same, said guard having an inwardly pr0- jecting lug arranged to be interlocked in 25 said angular slots.
