SMOKERS PIPE.
Application filed October This invention relates to smokers pipes, and more particularly to a pipe of this character provided with means for cleaning the same.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a pipe of simple and inexpensive construction in which the smoke tube can be readily cleaned by removing the mouthpiece or bit. A further object is to provide a pipe of this character including a smoke tube permanently associated with the pipe bowl and a cleaning member carried by the bit and movable in the tube for cleaning out the same when the bit is removed. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the pipe.
Fig. 2 is a detail of the bit, the cleaning member being shown in side view.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the smoke tube.
Fig. i is a section taken substantially on line 44i of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
The pipe includes a bowl 1 of any suitable or preferred shape from which extends a stem 2. A bit 3 is provided with a reduced portion i which fits snuglyinto stem 2 and is frictionally held therein. A stud 5 extends from the inner end of portion 4, being of less diameter than this portion and being provided at its inner end with an outer annular flange 6. A band 7 of metal or other suitable material fits about stud 5 and is confined between flange 6 and shoulder a at the inner end of reduced portion 4. The outer face of the band or ring 7 is flush with the outer face of flange 6 and a shank 8 of a brush 8 is secured to ring 7 for movement therewith. This shank is inclined downwardly and inwardly of the bowl 1 and carries at its lower end, a brush head 8 which operates in a smoke tube 9 of metal or other suitable material and the inner end of which is exteriorly threaded at 9 and is screwed into the forward portion of bowl 1 so as to be secured thereto. This tube is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 10 extending through its upper portion and from the outer end thereof to within a short distance of the inner end of'the tube,

this slot accommodating shank 8 of brush 8. The bit 3 snugly receives tube 9 so as to form a tight closure about the same. Preferably, though not necessarily, tube 9 is provided with a smoke opening 9 disposed to one side of slot 10 and within the bowl 1. As will be noted more clearly from Figure 1, shank 8 of the brush is positioned above slot 10 of tube 9 and will prevent the tobacco from being packed into the tube so as to clog or stop the same.
The pipe, when smoking, is used in the ordinary manner. When it is desired toclean the pipe, bit 3 may be turned so as to loosen the same, this turning movement being permitted by the loose connection between the bit and ring 7 after which the bit is with drawn from the tube 9. Withdrawing the bit from the tube moves the brush 8 outwardly along the tube, head 8 acting to effectually clean the tube and remove all materials therefrom. When the bit has been removed, tube'9 is exposed and access to this tube is readily had thru slot 10 for further cleaning thereof if desired or necessary. If desired, the tube 9 can be removed from the bowl 1, occasionally, for thorough cleaning of the tube and the pipe, though this is not often necessary. This provides a pipe of simple and inexpensive construction in which the parts are so associated and arranged as to permit the smoke passage or tube to be readily cleaned by the act of detaching the bit and, when desired, the various parts of the pipe can be completely disassembled for thorough cleaning thereof.
What I claim is:
1. In a smokers pipe, a bowl, a tube secured in the bowl and extending outwardly therefrom, a bit mounted on the tube, and a cleaning member carried by said bit and operating in the tube, the tube being provided with a longitudinally extending slot accommodating said cleaning member.
2. In a smokers pipe, a bowl having a stem extending therefrom, a tube secured in the bowl and extending beyond the same, a bit mounted on the tube and fitting into said stem, and a cleaning member carried by and loosely secured to said bit, said member operating in-the tube and said tube being provided with a slot accommodating the cleaning member.
3. In a smokers pipe, a bowl provided with a stemextending therefrom, a tube secured in the bowl and extending thru and beyond the stem, abit mounted upon said 5 tube'and fitting into the stem, a ring loosely mounted upon the inner portion of the bit for movement longitudinally of the tube therewith, said tube being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, and a cleaning member secured to said ring and operating through said slot in the tube.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatu'r'e.
ROBERT H. MOORE.
