IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,780, dated February 16, 1875 application filed January 10, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PLATT B. VIELE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York. have invented certain Improvements in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists in pivoting the legs or posts of the bedstead to a cross-bar, to which the slat or slats are attached at the foot and the head, and connecting said posts or legs together centrally by means of a swinging pivotal link, whereby the bedstead may be folded within its length when not in use, Without detaching any ofthe parts, by simply unclasping a locking-hook upon each of the inside legs.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bedstead, its standing or unfolded position, shown in full lines, and its closed position shown in dotted lines, a portion of the legs O and D on the front side being broken away to show the connecting-links. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the same in a folded position. Fig. 3 shows the locking-hooks.

The cross-bars B and Bl are securely atcached to the slats S at or near the ends. That at the foot, B, is made deeper, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit of a closer or more compact folding, by locating the pivot-point a of the inner legs O so far from the slats S that these legs shall clear the connecting cross bar or rod i" when closed upon the bar B. The legs D may be pivoted to the outer ends of the bar B at z'. They extend above or beyond the bar, and are provided with a wide crossbar, s, which constitutes a Sort of pillow or head-rest. The legs are connected together by links, n, 011e end of 4each of which is hung to the rod fr, and the other pivoted to the legs C, as shown in Fig. l.

To prevent the bedstead from being folded up by means of any undue or extra Weight applied at either end thereof, I provide the locking-hooks h, which are pivoted to the inner legs C and hook over the rod r, thereby preventing the links from swinging upon their axes.

This constitutes a very cheap and comfortable Slat-bedstead, and for hotels, hospitals, Snc., where extra numbers are required at times, which at other times have to be stored, y

they are especially desirable on account of the great compactness with which they fold up.

What I claim as my invention is l. A bedstead composed of the slats S, in combination with the legs C and the extended legs D, pivoted thereto and coupled together by means of the rod or rest r, pivotal links n, and the locking-hooks h, all operating substantially in the manner shown, and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination with the slats S, legs C, connecting-links n, locking-hooks h, and extended legs D, the elevated or inclined headrest s, for the purposes set forth.
