Application filed May 12, V1925. Serial 110.219,80.
This invention relates to a device adapted to facilitate the opening' of oysters and theL like, and the present invention aims to provide a device of this character which is of 5 simple and durable construction, which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which is also capable of quickly and speedily opening or shucking oysters or the like.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended 11 claim, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device embodying the present invention 2' in use,
Figure 2 is a plan view` of the device,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the parts of the same, and
.Figure 4.- is a similar view of the other 25 part thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates generally a frame which has a horizontal bar 2 and a pair of legs 3. The legs 3 have pairs of lugs 4. In a lug 1 of 30 "each pair a clamping screw 5 is threaded and has a finger piece G whereby it may be manipulated and also a swiveled clamping plate 7. By means of the upper lug 1 of the pairs of lugs and the clamping screws shown in Fig. 1.
The upper edge of the bar 2 of the frame is formed with teeth 8 so that when anl 55 5 the frame may be clamped on a table, as`
rit one corner of the frame 1 an apertured ear 9 is provided and the ear 9 co-acts with a similar ear 1() and a pivot pin 11 to piv otally connect an operating bar 12 to the frame. The ears 9 and 10 have stops 13 and 111 to limit the downward swinging movement of the bar 12. A cutter blade 15 is fastened by screws 16 to the bar 12 and is adapted to move down past one side face of the bar 2 of the frame. On the raised portion 17 of the bar 12 a cutter 18 is secured.
ln using the present invention for opening or shuckingoysters the oyster to be shucked is laid with the edges of its shell on the toothed portion of the bar 2, while the Operating or cutter bar 12 is elevated. Then when the cutter bar 12 is brought down the blade 15 clips olf the edges of the oyster shell to facilitate the introduction of the knife 18 in between the shell halves. The introduction of the knife 18 between the clipped edges of the shell halves completely opens the oyster shell.
l. claim:
ln a device of the character described, a frame having means for securing the same in position and also having a bar adapted to support an oyster or the like, a cutter bar pivoted to the frame and having a cutter fixed thereto and positioned to move Vpast one side face of the bar, and means for limiting the movement of the cutter downwardly past the bar during the cutting movement and comprising' a fixed stop rigid with the frame and a swingable stop rigid with the cutter bar and engageable with the underside of the fixed stop when the cutter has moved 'downwardly as far as desirable.
