W. KAPLON FIRE SIGNAL DEVICE Filed- April 27-, 925
INVENTOR. Mada/my ZQ M f atented Au 24, 1926.
UNITED STATES WLAIDYSLAVI KAPLON, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
FIRE-SIGNAL DEVICE.
Application filed. April 27, 1925.
'The present invention relates to improvements in fire-alarm devices, and more particularly to an explosive cartridge adapted to give an acoustic alarm or signal if the heat within a room increases beyond a certain temperature sufiiciently to explode said cartridge.
Another object of the invention is the provision of'sv fire-alarm which is adapted to be suspended at convenient places within a building.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an explosive cartridge adapted to be connected with easily fusible wires for exploding the same if heated beyond a certain degree.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fire-alarm of simple and inexpensive construction including a casing containing a powder cartridge in a paper wrapper provided with openings for the reception of the ends of the fusible wire.
These and other objects of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically pointed out in the append ed claim.
In the accompanying drawing formin material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a front elevation of the improved fire-alarm device constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of a detonating cartridge.
Fig. l is a perspective view of a fastening bracket.
A cylindrical casing 10 is closed at its ends by the perforated caps 11 and 12 adapted to be placed into the open ends of casings 13 and l t integrally made with or formed into brackets, the upper and lower extend ing arms 15 and 16 of which have holes 17 for the passage of fastening means for instance, screws 18, allowing a fastening of the device to any suitable support within a building.
The casings 13 and M are open at one side and have in their wall closing the opposite side, elongated transverse slots and 20 permitting the entrance of easily fusible wires 21 and 22 formed into knots 23 and 24 behind the inner walls of the caps 11 and Serial No. 26,166.
12 and having their ends extending into the powder charge 25, within the cylinder 10, as shown at 26 and 27.
These ends extend into the cartridge through holes 28 in the ends of the outer paper cover 29, or the like, for the cartridge about which the cable 80 is wound in a plurality of suitable convolut-ions, for instance as shown in Figure 3, or in any other suitable and desired manner.
The device operates as follows:
If the easily fusible wires 21 and :22 arev heated by an incipient fire to such a degree that the powder with cartridge 29 will explode, the detonation will give an acoustic warning signal. It will be clear that the brackets can be placed at suitable places in a building in which the alarm is to be installed so that the cartridges or their casings may quickly be placed and held therein.
The powder charge of the cartridge may also be combined with a fire extinguishing material which will be scattered by the explosion and tend to extinguish an incipient conliagration.
While l have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be clear that such changes may be made in the construction as fall within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An explosive fire-alarm comprising a cylindrical body, a perforated powder cartridge in said body, perforated end caps for said body, brackets shaped to form housings with one open side for the reception and support of said end caps and having elongated transverse slots in the wall closing said open side, means for securing said brackets to a support and fusible wires adapted to be entered into said caps and to be knotted below the inner walls of the same, said wires extending into said cartridge through the perforations thereof, and means for securing said brackets to a support.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
VVLADYSLAl/V KAPLON.
