PUMPING- MECHANISM.
This invention relates to pumping mechanismand more particularly to a mechanism for dispensing gasoline, oils or the like, in which the operating device has operative movement in one direction only and the driving connections between the operating device and the pump are automatically reversed at the end of each stroke of the pump piston, so that the movement of the operating device in one direction will cause the piston to be moved alternately in opposite directions. 1
One object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanism for automatically reversing the driving connections between the operating device and the pump.
A further object of the invention is to provide a reversing mechanism comprising a clutch with means for automatically shifting the same. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a reversible driving connection which will be simple in construction and positive in operation; and which cannot be short stroked.
A further object'of the invention is to provide such a mechanism with abell ringing device which will be actuated at the end of the stroke of each piston, thus preventing the ringing of the bell before the full quantity of liquid has been delivered.
Other objects of the inventionwill appear as the device is described in detail.

In thesedrawings we have illustrated one embodiment of our invention and have shown the same as applied to a double cylinder pump of a known type. It will be understood, however, that the mechanism itself may take various forms and may be applied to pumps or similar devices of various kinds, and that he device here shown may be applied equally well to a single cylinder pump as to a double cylinder pump.

outer end of which is secured a toothed rack 3 which, in effect, forms a continuation of the piston rod. These racks are so arranged that the teeth thereon face one another and mesh with a gear 4 arranged between them and mounted on a shaft 5 which in turn is mounted in a frame 6 on which the various parts of the mechanism It will be apparent that when the gear 4 is rotated the two racks will be moved simultaneously in opposite directions and the two racks are so arranged with relation to the gear that whenthe uppermost teeth of one rack are in mesh with the teeth of the gear the lowermost teeth on the other rack will be in mesh therewith, so that one piston will complete its upward movement at the same time that the other piston completes its downward movement. When the direction of movement of the gear is reversed, the direction of movement of the racks and pistons will also be reversed. Operating movement may be imparted to the gear from any suitable source of power but we prefer to utilize a manually operated device 'for this purpose and have, in the present instance, shown the operating device in the form of a crank or handle 7 connected with a shaft 8 journaled in bearings 9 and 10 on the frame 6. Reversible driving mechanism is interposed between the operating device or handle 7 and the gear 4: and means are provided for automatically reversing this mechanism at the end of each stroke of the pistons, thereby causing the gear at to be actuated, by the operating device 7, first in one direction and then in the other, the amount 01 the movement in each direction being sufiicient to impart full strokes to the pistons. These driving connections may take various forms but, in the present construction, we have arranged in mesh with the gear 4 two pinions 11 and 12.
The pinion 11 is loosely mounted on the shaft 8 and is permanently in mesh with the gear 4:. The pinion 12 is rigidly secured to a shaft 13, journaled in bearings 14 and 15 on the main frame 6 and is also permanently in mesh with the gear 4. The shaft l3 is connected with the shaft 8 bymeans ment of the device and this device moves always in the same direction. Any suitable means may be provided to prevent the mechanism being operated in a reverse direction and in the present instance we have interposed a pawl and ratchet connection between the operating device or handle and the shaft upon which it is mounted, thus preventing the operative movement of the handle in a reverse direction, although it may turn idly in a reverse direction. This pawl and ratchet connection is not here shown as it is a well known feature in mechanisms of this kind.
lVe have also provided means to positively prevent the shifting of the clutch 20 and the reversing of the driving gear 4 before the pistons have completed their strokes. To this end we have rigidly secured to the sleeve 21 of the clutch yoke an arm 41 which extends rearwardly therefrom. Pivotally mounted beyond the end of the arm 41 is a locking dog 42 having an intuii'ied end which is adapted to engage the lower edge of the arm 41 when the clutch is in one position and to engage the upper edge of that arm when the clutch is in the other position, thus serving to lock the clutch in that position to which it has been moved. The look ing dog 42 is rigidly secured to a shaft 43 journaled in brackets 44 depending from the main frame and having rigidly secured thereto two rearwardly extending arms 45 in the outer ends of which is mounted a rod 46, the ends of which extend beyond the arms 45 and are arranged in the paths of plungers or rods 47 mounted on the frame 6 and preferably slidably mounted in brackets 48 carried by the frame. These plungers are arranged in the paths of and are actuated by studs or projections 49 carried by the racks. The studs or plungers are so arranged with relation to the rods 46 of the tripping device that one of the plungers will be moved into engagement with the rod 46 as the corresponding rack ap roaches the upper limit of its movement ant will move the locking dog 42 out of engagement with the arm 41 just asthe rack completes its upward movement, thereby releasing the clutch for operation by the spring pressed device 30. A spring 50 acts on the rod 46 to move the dog into its operative position. As the plunger and the corresponding rack which have actuated the dog move downwardly the upward movement of the other rack will bring its stud 49 into engagement with the corresponding plunger and thus cause the rod to be again actuated during the last portion of the movement of that rack. The plungers are preferably adjustable so that the movement of thedog can be properly timed and, as here by a lock nut 52.
shown, each plunger is formed in two parts, the upper part having a portion 51 provided with a screw threaded socket into which the lower portion of the plunger is inserted and in which it is held in adjusted positions It is customary to provide dispensing pumps of this character with a gong or bell which'will be sounded upon the delivery of each specified quantity of liquid. lit is desirable that it should not be possible for the bell to ring before the piston has completed itsstrolre and has thereby delivered a full n'ieasure of liquid. lVe have, there fore, provided the apparatus with means whereby the bell ringing device will be actuated just as the piston reaches the upper limit of its movement. To accomplish this we have utilized the locking device or dog actuating mechanism for controlling the bell ringing device. As here shown, a bell 53 is mounted on a stud 54 projecting from the frame 6 adjacent to the locking device. An arm is rigidly secured to the rod 46 and rock shaft 43 so that it will move with the dog actuating mechanism when the latter is actuated by one of the plungers 47. Loosely mounted on the end of the arm 55, and depending therefrom, is a bell actuating member or plate 56 having on one face thereof a lug or projection 57 adapted to engage the end of an arm 58 rigidly secured to a sleeve 59 rotatably mounted on a stud 60. Secured to and extending upwardly from the sleeve 59 is a second arm 61 which carries a bell tapper here shown as consist ing of a resilient finger 62 and a tapper head 63. The arm 61 has an extension 64 which is acted upon by a spring 65 to move the bell tapper toward the bell. The arm 58 is provided with a nose 66 adapted to be engaged by the projection of the bell actuating member as the latter moves upwardly. The relation of the bell actuating plate 56 and projection 67 to the nose 66 is such that the upward movement of the plate will elevate the arm 58 and the projection 57 will then move out of contact with the nose to release the arm and permit the same to be moved downwardly together with the bell tapper, by the spring The lower end of the plate 56 is arranged to engage the stud 54 which carries the bell and thus properly position the stud 57 with relation to the nose of the arm 58. The outer edge of the plate 56 is inclined, as shown at 67, and 011 the downward movement of the plate 56 this inclined edge will engage a stud 68 and move the projection 57 into its operative position beneath the nose 66 of the arm 58 after the projection has moved down wardly beyond that nose, thus restoring the parts to operative position. It will be apparent that inasmuch as the clutch locking device is not released. until one of the piston racks reaches the upward limit of its movement that the bell will not be sounded until the pump has discharged a full measure of liquid. Further, the plungers 47 which actuate the locking crevice may be adjusted to properly time the operation thereof without affecting the operation of the bell as the bell will always ring at the end of the movement of the piston regardless of the adjustment of the plungers.
The operation of the mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing descript-ion and it, will be apparent that the clutch shifting device is rendered inoperative by the action of the gear i at'the end of each movement of the pistons in. either direction and that the locking device is released at the end of each movement of the pistons in either direction. The device is wholly automatic in its operation and provides a very simple and highly efficient device for reversing the direction of movement of the driving gear a without reversing the direction of movement of the operating device. The mechanism is of such a character that it will notgeasily get out of order or be broken and therefore its maintenance requires little attention. 7
While we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention we wish it to be understood that we do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may appear to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
1. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having operative movement in one direction only, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of an actuatingmember for said reversing mechanism provided with a cam surface having a high point between the ends thereof, a spring actuated device engaging said cam surface and tending to hold said actuating member normally at one limit of its movement, and means controlled by the movement of said gear to move said spring actuated device across the high point of said cam surface, whereby said spring actuated device will move said actuating member and shiftsaid reversing mechanism.
2. In a pumping.mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having operative movement in one direction only, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of an actuating member for said reversing mechanism provided with a cam surface having ahigh point between the ends thereof, a spring actuate device engagingsaid cam surface and tending to hold said actuating member normally at one limit of its movement, and means carried by said gear to cause said spring actuated device to move across the high point of said cam surface, whereby said spring actuated device will move said actuating member and shift said reversing mechanisi v 3. in a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having operative movement in one direction only, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of an actuating member for said reversing mechanism provided with a cam surface having a high point between the ends thereof, a spring actuated device pivotally n'iounted adjacent to said actuating member and having a part arranged to engage said c2 m surface and hold said actuating member normally at one limit of its movement, and means controlled by said gear for moving said spring actuated device about its axis to cause said part thereof to move across the high point of said actuating member against the tension of the spring, whereby it will impart iovement to said actuating member. 41-. 8. in a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having operative movement in one direction only, andreversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of an actuating member for said reversing mech anism provided with a cam surface having a highpoint between the ends thereof, a spring actuated device engaging said cam surface and tending to hold said actuating member normally at one limit of its movemoat, means controlled by the movement of said gear to move said spring actuated device across the high point of said cam surface, whereby said spring actuated device will move said actuating member andshift said reversing mechanism, and an automatically controlled device to lock said actuatingmember against movement until said rack has completed its movement in one direction.
9. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having operative movement in one direction only, and reversing mechanism interposed be tween said operating device and said gear, 0t an actuating device for said reversing mechanism provided with a cam surface having a high point between the ends there of, a spring actuated device engaging said cam surface and tending to hold said actuating member normallyat one limit of its movement, means controlled by the movement of said gear to move said spring actuated device across the high point of said cam surface, whereby said spring actuated device will move said actuating member and shift said reversing mechanism, a locking arm connected with said actuating member, a spring actuated dog to engage said arm and lock said actuating member against movement, and means actuated by said rack to move said dog into an inoperative position.
10. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device, a pair of pinions meshing with said gear, means comprising a clutch for separately connecting said pinions with said operating device to cause them to move said gear in. opposite directions, and a shifting device for said clutch, of an actuating member operatively connected with said shitting device and provided with a canr surface having a high point between the ends thereof, a spring actuated device engaging said cam surface and tending to hold said actuating member normally at one limit of its movement, and means controlled by said gear to move said spring actuated device across the high point of said cam surface, whereby the action of said spring actuated member will operate said clutch shitting device.
11. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a toothed rack a gear meshing with said-rack, an ope ating device, a pair of pinions meshing with said gear, means comprising a clutch for separately connecting said. pinions with said operating device to cause them to move said gear in op posite directions, and a shifting device for said clutch, of an actuating member operatively connected withsaid shifting device, a spring actuated device for imparting move-- ment to said actuating member, and means connected with said gear for controlling the movement of said spring actuated device 12. In a pumping mechanism the combination with atoothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device, a pair iii) of pinions meshing with said gear, means comprising a clutch for separately connecting said pinions with said operating device to cause them to move said gear in opposite directions, and a shifting device for said clutch, of an actuating plate operatively connected with said clutch shifting device and provided with a cam slot the high point of whichlies between the ends thereof, a supporting structure mounted beneath said plate, a plunger slidably mounted in said structure and having a part extending into said cam slot, a spring acting on said plunger to cause the same to hold said plate normally at one limit of its movement, and means connected with said gear to move said supporting structure about its axis and cause said part of said plunger to ride over the high point of said cam, whereby the action of said spring on said plunger will cause said plate to be moved about its axis.
13. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pair of toothed racks, a gear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, an operating device, driving connections between said operating device and said gear to cause said gear to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating device in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said driving connections with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of an actuating member operatively connected with said clutch shift- 7 ing device and having a cam surface, a
spring actuated device engaging the cam surface of said actuating member, and means actuated in unison with said gear to cause said spring pressed device to ride over the high point of said cam surface, whereby the action of said spring pressed member will cause'said actuating member to impart movement to said clutch shifting device.
14. In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pair of toothed racks, a gear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, an operating device, two trains of driving mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear to cause the latter to be rotated 'in opposite directions by the movement of said operating member in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said trains of driving mechanism with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of means controlled by the movement of said gear for automatically imparting operative movement to said clutchshift-ing device. V
15. In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pair of toothed racks, agear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, an operating device, two trains of driving mechanism interposed between-:1 said operating device and said gear to cause the latter to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating member in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said trains of driving mechanism with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of an actuating member, operatively connected with said clutch shifting device, a spring pressed device cooperating with said actuating member, and means controlled by the rotation of said gear'to cause said spring actuated device to impart movement to said actuating member.
16. In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pair of toothed racks, a gear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, an operating device, two trains of driving mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear to cause the same to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating member in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said trains of driving mechanism with said operating device, and a clutch shifting de vice, of a pivoted cam plate operatively connected with said clutch shifting device and having a cam surface the high point of which lies between the ends thereof, a pivoted supporting structure, a plunger slidably mounted in said supporting structure and having a part engaging said cam surface, a spring acting on said plunger to cause said part to normally exert pressure on said cam surface, an arm connected with said supporting structure,-and a part carried by said gear to engage Said arm and move said part of said plunger across the high point of said cam surface.
17. In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pair of toothed racks, a gear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, an operating" device, two trains of driving mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear to cause the latter to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating member in one directioma clutch to alternately connect said trains of driving in chanism with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of means controlled by the movement of said gear for automatically imparting operative movement to said clutch shifting device, means for locking said clutch shifting device normally against movement, and means controlled by said racks for releasing said locking device at the end of each complete movement of said racks.
18. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pair of toothed racks, a gear meshing with both racks to move them simultaneously in opposite directions, operating device, two trains of driving mechanism interposed between saidoperatingl device and said gear to cause the same to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating member in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said trains of driving mechanism with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of an actuating member operatively connected with said clutch shifting device, a spring pressed device cooperating with said actuating member, means controlled by the rotation of said gear to cause said spring actuated device to impart movement to said actuating member, a locking arm connected with said clutch shifting device, a pivoted dog arranged to engage said locking arm and hold said clutch shifting device against movement, arms connected with said dog, parts connected withsaid arms for actuating the same, plungers arranged to engage said parts, and projections carried by said racks to engage said plunger-s and impart movement to said dog.
19. In a pumping mechanism a pair of toothed racks, a driving gear meshing with both of said racks to move them simultane ously in opposite directions, a rotatable shaft, an operating member secured to said shaft, a pinion loosely mounted on said shaft and meshing with said gear, a second shaft, a pinion rigidly secured to said second shaft and meshing with said gear, a gear secured to the last mentioned shaft, a second gear loosely mounted on the first mentioned shaft and meshing with the last mentioned gear, a clutch to connect either the first mentioned pinion or said second gear with said first mentioned shaft, and a clutch shifting device, of means controlled by the movement of said driving gear for automatically actuating said clutch shifting device at the end of each movement of said racks.
20. In a pumping mechanism the com bination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operatingdevice having operative movement in one direction only, reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of an actuating member for said reversing mechanism pivotally mounted between its ends and having a guide surface extending across its axis, a spring actuated device on said guide surface and tending to move said actuating member to the limit of its movement in one direction or the other, and means controlled by the movement of said gear to move said spring actuated device along said guide surface and across the axis of said actuating member.
21. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a rotatable driving member, an operating device having operative movement in one direct-ion only, reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said rotatable driving member, of an actuating member operatively connected with said reversing mechanism, pivotally 1nountand means controlled by the movement of said driving member to move said spring actuated device across the center of said guide surface, whereby said spring actuated device will move said actuating member and shift said reversing mechanism.
In a pumping mechanism the combination with a rotatable driving member, an operating device, driving connections between said operating device and said driving member to cause said driving member to be rotated in opposite directions by the movement of said operating device in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said driving connections with said operating device, and a clutch shifting device, of a pivotally mounted actuating member operatively connected. with said clutch shifting device and having a guide surface extending across its axis, a spring actuated device engaging the guide surface of said actuating member, and means actuated in unison with said driving member to cause said spring actuated de vice to move across the axis of said actuating member and thereby shift the same.
In a pumping mechanism the combination with a rotatable driving member, an operating device, driving connections between said operating device and said. driving member tocause said driving member to be rotated in opposite directions by the movementof said operating device in one direction, a clutch to alternately connect said driving connections with said ope ating de vice, and a clutch shifting device, of an actuating member operatively connected with said clutch shifting device and means controlled by the movement of said driving member to automatically impart operative movement to said actuating member.
In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a toothed rack, a gear meshing with said rack, an operating device having movement in one direction, a reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said gear, of a locking device to control the operation of said reversing mechanism, means controlled by the movement of said rack to release said lock, a bell, and means controlled by said lockmechanism to sound said bell.
25. in a. pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means, of a locking device to control the movement of said reversing mechanism and comprising means actuated by said pump rod for releasing said reversing mechanism at the end of the stroke of said pump rod, a bell, a means for actuating said bell controlled by the operation of said locking mechanism.
2. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means, of a locking member connected with said reversing mechanism, a second locking member cooperating with the first mentioned locking member, means controlled by the movement of said pump rod to actuate said second locking member, a bell ringing device, and an operative connection between said second locking member and said bell ringing device.
27. In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating saidipump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device aiidsaid actuating means, of a locking member connected with said reversing mechanism, a second locking member cooperating with the first mentioned locking member, means controlled by the movement of said pump rod to actuate said second locking'meniber, an arm connected with said second locking member, and a bell ringing device carried by said arm.
28. in a pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating saidpump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means,rot a locking member connected with said reversing mechanism, a rock shat't, a dog rigidly securedto said rock shaft and movable into and out 01" looking relation with said looking member, means actuated by said pump rod for imparting rocking movement to said shaft and said dog, a bell ringing device, and an arm rigidly connected with said rock shaft and arranged to impart movement to said bell ringing device.

In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means, of a locking member connected with said reversing mechanism, a pivoted dog mounted for movement into and out of locking relation with said locking member, a part actuated bysaid pump rod for imparting movement to said dog, a bell, a bell ringing device, and means controlled-by said part for imparting movement to said bell ringing device.

In a pumping mechanism the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversingmecha iiism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means, of a locking member connected with said reversing member, a pivoted dog mounted for movement into and out of locking relation with said locking member, an arm connected with said dog, a plunger mounted adjacent to said arm, a part carried by saidarm and arranged in the path of said plunger, a part connected with said pump rod for imparting movement to said plunger, a bell, a bell ringing device, and a part connected with said arm for actuating said bell ringing device.

In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said operating device and said actuating means, of a locking device to control the movement of said reversing mechanism comprising a part movable into and out of locking position, and means actuated by said pump 20 rod for moving said part of said locking device into its inoperative position at the end of a stroke of said pump rod.

In a pumping mechanism, the combination with a pump rod, means for actuating said pump rod, an operating device for said actuating means, and reversing mechanism interposed between said 0perating device and said actuating means, of a locking member connected with said reversing mechanism, a rock shaft, a dog rigidly secured to said rock shaft and movable into and out of locking relation with said locking member, and means actuated by said pump rod for imparting rocking movement to said shaft and said dog.
