IMPROVEMENT lN MACHINES FOR PAINTING BALE-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 59,703, dated February 9, 1875; application filed January 22, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON J. NELLIS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Painting and Varnishing Bale-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure} is a perspective view of an apparatus embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.

My invention relates to apparatus for applying paints and varnishes to bale-bands, ties, and similar articles; and it consists in a working-table having a central varnishtrough, said trough being provided with an incline to facilitate the withdrawal of the bands, and a set of brushes or wipers to spread the coating evenly upon the bands to remove the surplus varnish or paint.

In the preparation of cotton-bale ties and similar articles for the market it is necessary to coat or varnish them to protect them from rust. This has heretofore been done by first bundling the ties, and then dipping them in tanks of varnish, either hot or made liquid by some solvent, and as a result the ties were not evenly or uniformly coated, often being green or sticky when desired for use, so that the user on opening a bundle had to go over each tie with a brush. These annoyances, as well as the great loss from excessive amount of varnish used, it is the object of the present invention to overcome.

I will now proceed to describe my devices with reference to the drawing, in which A represents a table sufficiently long to accommodate the bale-band, and divided centrally by a trough, B, running lengthwise of the .table. On each side of trough B, at the upper end of the table, is a punch, G, which may be of any approved construction, and arranged so as to be within easy reach of the operator. B indicates a trough for varnish or other coating material. running lengthwise of the table A, and dividing it into two working surfaces, each of which is provided with its punch and anvil, as before specified. This trough is provided with an incline, b, to facilitate the withdrawal of the bale-bands and to guide the surplus varnish back into the trough. It has a set of brushes or wipers, b N, arranged across the incline, the under one of which, I), may be secured, while the upper, 12 is hinged at one end to the side of the trough or to the table, and has a projection or dog upon its opposite end, which takes into notches upon an upright, so that the pressure of the wipers upon the band passing between them can be regulated so as to control the amount of coating material left upon thaband.

The devices are operated as follows: The workman having a lot of bale'bands before him on table A seizes one, and passing it through the buckle folds the band, punches it, and inserts the rivet, after which he pushes it from him into trough B, which has been previously filled with the varnish or other coating material. A second set of opera tives now seize the band and draw it through the material in the trough up the incline, and between the wipers or brushes which have been previously set to make the required pressure, after which the band and tie are placed upon racks to dry and are finally bundled.

The varnish or coating material generally employed by me isone in which a light hydrocarbon solvent is used, but where heat is required to render the coating material liquid the trough B may be surrounded by steam or hot-air pipes, or may be made double walled, so as to obtain steam or hotair chambers, and the table may also be provided with pockets to hold the slotted buckles and rivets.
