UNITED STATES DAVID B. CONGLIN, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION FURNITURE.
Application filed February 3, 1925. Serial No. 6,609.
My invention relates to improvements in combination furniture and more particu larly to a. combination kitchen table or cabi net and ironing board.
It is an important object of the invention to provide an article of the above character having a number of useful kitchen articles compactly arranged so as to be easily accessible for use by the housewife at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of the above character having a sliding ironing board equipped with means for detachably connecting a bosom board to the same, when in an extended position.
Another object'of the invention is to pro vide an article of the above mentioned character which is simple and durable in construction, efficient in use and inexpensive to manu tact ure.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of my invention,
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the table,
Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view of the same,
Fig. 4, is a detail sectional view of the connection between the bosom board and ironing board,
Fig. 5, is a perspective View of the seat, and,
Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the ironing board.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 5 denotes a table having atop 6 and a foot space beneath the top with vertical rows of drawers 7- arranged at each side thereof. A relative large compartment 8 is disposed directly beneath the top 6 of the table extending the full length and width of the table. A small drawer 9 is slidably mounted within the compartment and directly over the drawer a pair of spaced parallel angle bars 10 are secured to the underside of the top 6 and extend longitudinally of the table to provide a track to receive the slidable ironingboard or base member 11 which is adapted to extend tl'irough the slot 12 at one end of the table. To limit the movement of the ironing board when extended, a cross bar 13 extends across the inner end and blocks 13 are secured to each side. A bracket 1stis secured to the end'ot' the table directly beneath the ironing board, for bracing the board when in use.
As more clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 6 the ironing board or base member adjacent its inner end has an opening '15. therethrough, which is surrounded by a shoulder 16 on each side of the boardto receive the upper and lower plates 17 andlS secured in place by rivets 18. The upper plate has a central elongated opening 19 to receive the L-shaped foot 20 secured to the depending standard 21 of the bosom board 22. It will be noted that the opening 19 is of suttlcient length to permit the ready insertion and removal of the foot from the upper plate. When inserted the standard 21' rests on the surface of the upper plate. The lower plate 18 adjacent one end is provided with spaced aligned bearings 23 inside the opening 15 on a line with the foot 20 and a plunger 24 is slidably mounted in the bearings having an operating arm 25 depending therefrom and extending through the slot 26 in the lower plate 18. A spring 27 is mounted on the plun er between the operating arm and one of the bearings being adapted to hold the plunger in contact with the foot 20 and thereby secure the foot in place and prevent accidental displacement of the same. To release the foot the plunger is drawn back against the pressure of the spring, by the operating handle.
As more clearly shown in Fig. 1, a kitchen cabinet 28 is mounted on the rear portion of the table top having a series of shelves 29 divided into compartments 30 by thepartitions 31, to receive various kitchen articles. The front of the cabinet is equipped with. a pair of swinging doors 32 hinged to the end of the cabinet, as at In the base 84; of the cabinet a bread board 35 is'slidably mounted.
In the foot space beneath the top of the table a rack 36 of wire mesh material is supported by brackets 37, adapted to support irons which are being used.
At one side/of the foot space near the front of the table I provide a seat 38 having a tongue 39 which is pivotally mounted in a recess 40 and secured to the underside of the seat is a bracket 41 to brace the seat when in use.
At the end of the tableopposite to the end to which the ironing board is attached I provide a clothes rack 42 which is pivotally connected to the table, so it may be folded against the end when not in use.
Thus it is seen that l have provided a combination article of furniture which is compactly arranged. so as to consume the minimum amount of space and will be highly serviceable to the lmusewil'e. 'lhe ironing board which forms one of the parts of my invention is so constructed that a bosom board, if desired, may be readily con nected therewith and firmly supported in proper position.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangementof parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a device of the kind described, the co1nbination with a base member having an opening therethrough and upper and lower shoulders in said opening, top and bottom plates on said shoulders. each having a slot therethrongh, a lNHOHl board having a standard depending therefrom, an L-shaped toot Connor-ted to said standard, adapted to be inserted through the slot in said top plate, a longitudinal movable locking rod intermediate said plates. spring; means carried by said rod for normally holding he rod in engagement with said foot, and operating means connected with said rod and extending through the slot in the bottom plate for releasing said rod from engage ment with said foot.
In testimony whereof, I attix my signature. Y
DAVID B. CONCLIN.
