PARTING- STRIP FOB, .ViNI BOXVS AND THE Application filed October 26, 192.2, Serial No. 535,938.
My present invention relates to metal window frames, particularly the \VlIlClOW jambs, parting strips, andside rails of window sashes which may be used in connection 5 with such window' metal frames.
it is an object of the present invention to provide metal window frames of the general character specified above, which shall be simple in construction, easy to manufacand to assemble, and which shall provide ei'licient means for positioning the window tion in their frames, as in those cases where the invention is applied to the usual type of double hung windows. It is another object of the present invention to. provide a device of the character described above which, while being mechanically very well adapted to accomplish the desired r sults previously enumerated, shall at the same time "present a very neat and attractive appearance which shall highly recommend such devices to architects, builders and the like. I M
In the accompanying specification 1. shall decribe, and in the the annexed drawing show, a preferred embodiment of; the pres.- ent invention, particularly as applied to the usual type of double hung windows.
invention is not limited to the specific embodinient thereof herein shown and 'described for purposes of illustration only.
7 Referring to th drawing, wherein I have illustrated the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame embodying the present invention;
and
T Figure 2 an enlarged scale, taken along line 22 of Figure 1, in such a. position of the lower sash that the same overlies t e upper sash at the position of the same indicated by line 22.
Referring to en'ibodiment of same comprises indicated by reference character 10, and carrying within it an upper sash l1 and a lower sash 12, the window being of the customary double hung type.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 2 of the drawing, 13 and 14 indicate window jambs or pulley stiles. Since the jambs the aforesaid illustrative the present lnvention, the
sashes for easy sliding and manipula,
T,1 in 1S, so however, to be clearly understood that my is a cross-section of the same, on
a window-frame, generally 7 13 and 1 1 are preferably identical in all respects, it will be sufficient for thQfpurposes of the present, description to describe but one Ofthese jainbs. "lalring, fOreXalnple, the jamb 13, the same comprises a main web portion provided with the L-shap'ed flanges h, the transverse flange portion 17 which cooperate with a sheet metal housing which it is not deemed necessary to show herein, the end of which, indicated by reference character 18, is bent aboutthe i; portion 17 to form the weight box generally indicated by reference character Tlhe web portion comprises an interrn diate depressed portion 2O, the substantiaily central portion 21 of which is slightraised to provide a plurality of channels and 23 for a purpose subsequently to be described 1n greater detail.
Cooperating with the" lntermedlate olepressed portion and the substantially n tur, ,.1 r -ri d w th h nsv e We or portions 44: and lS, which at their outer ends carry the flange members 46 and 17,
respectively. It will be noted that' the fiange members 16 and .47 preferably extend above and belowthe web or flange portions and &5, respectively. 1t will similarly a: be noted that the lower'portions 48 and 49 of the flange portions 46and 4:7, respectively, lit into the respective grooves 22 and 23 of the jamb 13. I
For the purposes of the present invention, which relates more particularly to the side rails 11v and 12 of the upper and lower sashes of the window 10, the parting strips -10, and the window jambs 13 and let, rather than to the top, bottom and meeting rails of the upper and lower sashes 11 and 12, respectively, it will be suilicient to describe in detail the side rails simply of one of the sashes, for example the lower sash 12.
Taking the lower sash 12 as the example, the side rails 50 comprise a web 51 of metal provided with the outwardly.extending integral weather strips in the form of the flanges 52 and 53, one of the flanges, in this case the. flange 53, fitting into a groove 46 defined between the flange member 16 and the flange portion 42 of the parting strip 10. The other flange member 52 is adjacent the ornamental bead 54, in the case of the lower sash 12, and adjacent a similar ornamental bead 54c, in the case of the upper sash 11.
The central web portion 51 of the side rail 50 is provided with the inwardly turned L-shaped flange 55 which cooperates with the outer glass molding 56 to properly position, retain and protect the pane of glass 57. It will be noted the sashes are glazed on the outside.
The operation of the device described in detail above, and advantages in same in use, will be substantially clear from the foregoing description. The construction of the window jambs or pulley stiles 13 and 1a is such as to provide, in a very simple and sui'licient manner, proper housing for the pulley weights and proper guidance and support for the parting strips and the up per and lower sashes of the double hung window. The parting strip itself is ingeniously devised to provide in a simple but efficient manner proper guidance and support for the flange members 52 and 53 of the upper and lower sashes 11 and 12, respectively.
The various metal parts of the window frame described in detail are so designed to enable them to be readily and conveniently made of bronze or other suitable metal by extrusion. These parts are further designed to present a very neat and attractive appearance which makes the device as a whole, very salable and renders the same a commercially valuable article.
The arrangement of grooves or channels in the window jamb is such as to enable the ready insertion and removal of the parting strip, while the arrangement of the grooves or channels in the parting strip and the combin ation with the parting strip containing the grooves or channels, of the beads 54 and 5a, is suchas to provide a highly eflicient means for providing the necessary sliding bearings for the upper and lower sashes, l1 and 12.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a metal window frame, a parting strip comprising a main central web portion having an intermediate raised portion, and a plurality of flange portions attached to said web portion and coextensive with a part at least of said raised portion for providing a plurality of channels for receiving a flanged portion of a sash member.
