Application filed February 4, 1926.
This invention relates to signs, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set'forth, an article of such class for quickly attracting the attention of a person to the indicia displayed thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to, including a sign board having end wings so disposed for quickly catching the wind at the right and for quickly discharging the Wind from the left end thereof thereby providing for the revolving of the board to direct attention to the indicia displayed thereon and to further indicia displayed on other elements of the sign.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.-

A sign in accordance with this invention includes a supporting post, a stationary sign of the revoluble element which is termed a stationary board whether made of metal or wood, a revoluble Serial No. 85,967.
sign element which is termed a revoluble board whether made of metal or wood, a shaft for the revoluble board, and a standard common to the shaft and the stationary board. In the embodiment of the invention, as illustrated the stationary and revoluble sign boards are shown constructed of metallic material and this latter material is preferred in view of its durability.
The supporting. post, which is indicated by the reference character 1 is of any suitable height and constructed of wood, metal, cement or concrete. As illustrated the supporting post is formed of WOOd. and is of polygonal contour, but provided with a bevelled top 2. Secured to" one face of the post 2 and projecting a substantial distance therefrom is a metallic standard 3, provided at its upper end with an inwardly extending right angularly disposed flange 4. The standard .3 is constructed from a length of metallic material of materially less width than the width of that face of the post 1 to which the standard 3 is connected. The standard 8 is disposed centrally with respect to the post 1, and is secured to the latter by a series of hold-fast devices 5, and each of these latter consists of a bolt andv a nut. Openings 6 are provided in the standard 3 for the passage of the bolts; The heads of the bolts are positioned against the outer face of the standard 8 and the shanks of the bolts extend entirely through the post 1', project therefrom and carry securing nuts 7 on their projecting ends. The flange 4 is provided with a vertical opening 8 for a purpose to be presently referred to.
The stationary sign board is referred to generally by the reference character 9 and is formed from a rectangular sheet of metallic material provided at its top and bottom with a 'rearwardly extending right angularly disposed lengthwise-arranged flange 10, and each end of each of the flanges 1O is'bevelled as at 11. The 'body" portion of'the sign board 9 is indicated at 12, and is formed with a pair of'openings '13 which register with openings 14 formed in the standard '8. The front face of the'body portion 12 is positioned against'therear face of the standard 3 and the. said stationary sign board 9 is fixedly secured to the standard 3 by rivets 15 which extend through theregistering openings 13 and '14 and are upset whereby the stationary sign board 9, is fixedly secured in position and projects'latplate of sheet metal of the desired gage. The
plate is of greater length than width and formed of a pair of end portions and an intermediate portion. The intermediate portion is rectangular in contour and is termed the body portion 20 of the sign. The end portions are of compound curvature and longitudinal section, are oppositely disposed with. respect to each other and are termed wings. The wing at theleft end of the body portion 20 is indicated at 22 and that at the right end at 23. The wings are disposed at an inclination with respect to the body portion 20, The wing 22 extends at an.
inward inclination withrespect to the inner face of the body portion 20 and the wing 23 extends at. an outward inclination with respect to. the outer face of the body portion 20. The top edge of the revoluble sign is formed with a pair of spaced lengthwise. extending flanges 241, 25., The revoluble sign board is provided at its bottom with a pair of. spaced lengthwise extending in wardly disposed flanges 26, 27. The said flanges 24, 26', extend laterally and clown- Wardly at an inward inclination and abut respectively against the body portion and wings. The said flanges 25,. 27, extend latorally and upwardly at an inward inclination and abut respectively against the body portion and wings. The. flanges, 24C, 26 extend from a point removed from the semicircular central portion 21 of the body portion 20; and terminateat the outer end of the wing 2'. The flanges 25,, 27 extend from: a, point removed from the central portion 21 of the body portion. 20 and terminate at the, outer end of the wing 23. Each of said lengthwise extending flanges 1s angle-shaped in cross section as shown in Figure 5 and provides reinforcing beads at the top and bottom of the revoluble sign board.

Secured to the inner face of the body portion 20 and extending from. the top to the bottom edge thereof is a semi-circular memher 28., pro ided; with a pair of oppositely extending laterallydisposed flanges 29 which are secured to the body portion 20 by the rivets 30. The semi-circular member 28 v in connection with: the semi-circular portion 21 provides a bearing for a sleeve 31 which is mounted on the'shaft 18 and is interposed between the upper nut 17 and the nut 19 at the upper end of the shaft 18.
The, body portion 20 of the revoluble sign board is provided with suitable indicia as at 32 for display purposes. The revoluble sign board is positioned a substantial distance above the stationary sign board and the indicia 32 is arranged-on the outer face of the body portion 20. The curvature of the wings 22, 23, as well as their disposition at an inclination with respect to the body portion 20 provided for the quick catching of the wind at the right hand of the body portion 20 and for the quick discharge of the wind from the left hand of the body portion 20 under such conditions provide means whereby the revoluble sign board is revolved continuously by the wind and the wind attacks the revoluble sign board at a slant and is directed therefrom in the same manner.
It is thought the many advantages of a sign, in accordance with this invention, particularly in view of the arranging of a rovoluble sign board upon a stationary sign board so that quick attention. will be directed to the indicia displayed can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it. is to be, understood that changes in the detail of construction can be had which Will fall within the scope of the invention. as claimed,
What I claim is V 1. A revoluble. sign comprising av rectangular body portion having extended from each end thereof a wing of. compound curvature disposed at an inclination with respect to the body portion, said wings being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, said body portion at each lengthwise; edge thereof formed with a pair of spaced angleshaped flanges, each of said flanges extendinglaterally and inwardly with respect to and further having its free edge abutting one face ofsaid body portion, the inner ends of each pair of flanges spaced from each, other, and each of said Win-gs provided at the lengthwise edges thereof throughout with an angle-shaped flange of thesa me contour as the flanges of the body portion and i the inner ends ofthe flanges of the wings merging into the outer ends ofthe; flanges of the body portion. 7
2. A revoluble sign comprising rectangular body portion having extended from each end thereof a wing of compound curvature disposed at an inclinationwith respect to the body portion, said wings: being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, said body portion ateach lengthwise edge thereof formed with a pair of spaced angle-shaped flanges, each of said-flanges extending laterally and I inwardly with respect to and further having its freeedge abutting one face of said body portion, the inner ends of each pair of flanges spaced from each other, and each of said wings provided at the lengthwise edges thereof throughout with an angle-shaped flange of the same contour as the flanges of the body portion and the inner ends of the flanges of the wings merging into the, outer ends of the flanges of the body portion, said body portions between the inner ends of the flanges thereof formed with a transversely extending part of semi-circular cross section projecting from one face of the body portion, and an oppositely flanged semicircular member secured against the other face of the body portion and having its flanges engaging the inner ends of the flanges of the body portion and providing in connection with said semi-circular part a bearing for the sign.
3. A sign comprising a rectangular body portion having extended from each end thereof a Wing of compound curvature disposed at an inclination with respect to the body portion, said wing being oppositely disposed, said body portion having each lengthwise edge thereof formed with a pair of spaced inturned flanges to provide reinforcing beads, each of said wings having each of its lengthwise edges formed with an inturned flange to provide a reinforcing bead the flanges of the wings of the same contour as the flanges of the body portion and having their inner ends merging into the outer ends of the flanges of the body portion, the inner ends of the flanges of the body portion being spaced from each other, said body portion between the inner end of the flanges thereof formed with a transversely extending part of semi-circular cross section projecting from one face thereof,
and an oppositely flanged semi-circular member secured against one face of the body portion and having its flanges abutting against the inner ends of the flanges of the body portion and forming in'connection with said transversely extending part a bearing for the sign.
