a'LEHR DIE FOR .PRQESSING HEEL SEATS ON SHOES Filed July 9 1925 INVE R BENJAMIN HR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 17, 1926.
UNITED sra'rss all s VICE CO., INC., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK..
DIE FOB. FBESSING HEEL SEATS ON SHOES.
Application filed July 9, 1925. Serial No. 42,5
This invention relates to dies for pressing heel seats on shoes preparatory to the attachment of wood heels thereto, the object in view being to produce a method of so pressing and shaping the heel seat, as to permit of a definite, well-defined, and close fit of the heel.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive die that will produce uniform and accurately centered and positioned heel sea-ts.
In preparing a heel seat for the at tachment of a Wood heel thereto, it is a prime requiste that the heel seat be accurately shaped to conform with the shape of the joining surface of the heel, otherwise unsightly and otherwise undesirable spaces between the heel seat and the heel will appear. It is also essential that the die used in pressing out the heel seat be firmly and immovably held to the counter of the shoe, so as to obviate the possibility of attaching the heel off-center. My invention conforms to these requirements, as it contains a pressing surface designed to produce an accurate fit, and a guide or encircling member for holding the die in position for pressin in the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of a die embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation of a shoe showing the die in place.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of a shoe preparatory to the application of the die.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a common form of heel, showing its position on the heel seat.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the die, comprising the central area 2 and the U-shaped elevated border portion 3 consisting of surfaces 4, 5, 6, and 7. The annular member 8 serves as a guide for positioning the die on the shoe. To 9 is attached the pressing mechanism for producing the desired shape of the heel seat.
The heel seat of a shoe consists of portion 10 of the sole 11, and that part or rim of the counter represented by 12. The die is so placed upon the shoe, that the extended part 13 of member 8 snugly fits around the counter at 14, thus holding and automatically keeping the tool in place. This obviates hand adjustment and insures a correct positioning of the die for 'accuratecem tering of the heel. i
The surface 7 provides a recess and seat for the edge 15 of the heel 16. The surface 5 bears down upon the rim 12 of the counter, straightening and flattening out any protruding points or elements that would otherwise .bear against the surface 17 of the heel. and prevent a tight fit. The surface 2 abuts against the portion 10, shaping that part to properly receive the heel. The surface 6 together with the inner surface 18 of member 8 also serves an additional function, namely to prevent the spreading out of the rim 12 of the counter due to the pressure of the die. It is thus seen that the elements that comprise the pressing surface of the die, namely the central area 2 and the border portion 3 with its surfaces 4, 5, 6, and 7, serve to provide an accurate and close fit of the heel; and that the encircling element 8 functions as a guide for the positioning of the die and provides a means of accurately centering the heel.
While I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention, it is manifest that many changes may be made in the configuration of the die, within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is:
1. A die of the class described comprising a body portion containing a pressing surface and an annular member encircling the back and sides of said body portion, said pressing surface consisting of a central area and a U-shaped elevated border, said central area being suitably curved and arranged to abut against and shape the sole portion of a heel seat, said U-shaped border being arranged to abut against and press the counter portion of the heel seat, said annular member being arranged to surround the counter of the shoe in order to firmly and immovably hold and center the said die in position for pressing.
2. A die of the class described containing a pressing surface consisting of a central area and a U-shaped elevated border, said central area being suitably curved and arranged to abut against and press the sole portion of a heel seat, said U-shaped border comprising a plurality of concentrically curved intersecting surfaces formed in steps, substantially as described, and arranged to press and shape the counter por- BENJAMIN Latin, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, Assisnoa To nnw METHOD snon'nn tion of the heel seat to permit of a Welldefined and close fit of the heel.
3. A die of the class described, comprising a body portion containing a pressing surface and an annular member partially encircling the said body portion, said pressing surface consisting of aecentralarea and a U-shaped elevated border, said central area being suitably curved and-arrangedto abut against and press the sole portion of atheel seat, said aU-shaped'border comprising a plurality of concentrically curved interseating surfaces formed in --:steps,@,substantially as described, and :iarrangedtto abut against and press the counter portion of the heel seat to permit of a well-defined and close fit ofthe heel; said annular'meinber being arranged to surround the counter of the shoe in order to firmly and immovably hold and center the said die in position for pressing.
'In testimony whereof I hereby affix my signature.
