IMPROVEMENT |N SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent o. l 59,575, dated February 9, 1875; application filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM HIRoNs and JAMES D. MOORE, of Grinnell, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa7 have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sewing- Machines 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing' is a representation ot' a sectional view of our sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements on the sewingqnachine for which Letters Pat; ent of the United States were granted to us August 12, 187 3; and the novelty consists in the construction and operation of the parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a needlefarm or bracket, which overhangs the cloth-plate; and B is the main shaft, which has its bearings in this bar, and which carries on one end a balance-wheel, B1, and a belt-pulley, B2. On the other end of shaft B are keyed a crank-plate, c1, and two cams, c2 c3. The wrist-pin c, on the face of plate c1, plays in a V-shaped groove, n, formed in an enlargement of the needle-bar D, and thus gives a vertical motion to this bar. The overhanging end of the bracket A is constructed with an upper rigid guide, b, and a lower circular and horizontal ring-guide, b', in which latter is applied a flanged disk, G, which can be turned about its axis by means of a handle, l. The flanges la la of this disk G keep it in place on the ring-guide. The upper portion of the needle-bar D plays freely through the guide b, and the lower portion plays freely through the center of the circularly-adjustable disk G. E designates the feed-bar, which has the pressure-foot g formed on its lower end, and a fork, d, formed on its upper end, through the ends of the two prongs of which fork the needle-bar D plays freely. The feed-bar E passes through the disk G, and its lower end is free to play ina radial slot through this disk. v Just above the disk G an angular extension, f, is formed on the feed-bar, which extension is held in contact with a cone, F, by meansof a spring, h. The cone F receives freely through it the needle-bar D, and the base of this cone is secured upon a liftingstirrup, j, the upper straight portion of which is slotted and hung upon the free end of a spring, s, which end has a lug, s', formed on it, the lower end of which bears upon the surface of a lifting-cam, c2. The cone F thus receives vertical motion from the shaft B independently of the needle-bar which plays through it. The upward movements of the cone F give the feed-movements to the press ure-foot g, and the length of feed can lbe regulated by means of a nut, t, on a screw, t2. S designates a slotted spring, which is secured at one end to the top of the needle-arm A, and which has a rectangular portion, S', and a forked portion, e, formed on itsfree end. The portion S bears upon a cam, c3, and the forked portion e embraces the needle-bar freely between the two forks d on the upper end of the feed-bar E.
The cam c3, acting on the spring S, will, by these means, give the vertical movements to the bar E at the same time that this bar receives a vibrating or feed motion from the cone F.
The free end of the spring S can be lifted free from the cam which actuates it by means of a toe, t3, which is fast on the stem of the handle l', and the spring can be adjusted for regulating the pressure on the foot g by means of a thumb-screw, tl. (Shown in Fig. l.)
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The main shaft B and its cams c2 c3, the springs S s, and the lifting-bar and cone, in combination with the feeding device E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The main shaft B, having the cam c3, in combination with the feeding device, with the forked portion d, and the spring S, having a forked portion, e, embracing the needlebar between the two forks d on the upper end of the feed-bar E, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the lifting-cam c2, of the spring s, slotted lifting-bar j, and cone F, as and for the purpose described.
