NITED- STATES PATENT GEEIG GEORGE S. BROWER, GEORGE W. BROWER, AND EDWIN A. BROWER, OF
GRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT` IN WHEELCULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,560, dated February 9, 1875; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE S. BEoWEE, GEORGE W.BEowER,and EDWINABROWER, of Orawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State'of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Riding Oorn Oultivator, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will iirst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a plan view of our improved cultiva-tor. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line w or of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
We use short independent cranked axles A, on the top of which we mount the metal framepieces B, at their middle, or thereabout, bolting them on by bolts O, passing'through slots D, so that they can be shifted forward and backward, as may be required, for balancing the machine. The metal bars B have a curved and recessed extension, in which we arrange the curved hind cross-bar, F, as shown, for
i connecting the frame-bars rigidly together.
At the front end of these frame-bars the Wood plow or shovel frame G is pivoted, by the rod H, considerably in advance of its hind end. At the rear end of this frame, on each side, is a yoke, I, through which the cranked rod, which is pivoted to the frame-bars B at J, passes, to holdhe rear end of the plow-frame high or low, fo 'regulating the depth of the plows, by holding the frame on it by the pins L, which may be adjusted by shifting them in the holes in the yokes. These yokes also have a lateral slot or notch, IVI, into which the cranked rod is swung to hold the plows entirely above the ground. The outside plowstocks, N,fare pivoted directly to the outside beams of the wood frame; but the inside stocks, O, are pivoted to hangers P, which are iitted on vthe rod Q, so that they can be shifted toward and from each other, to vary the distance of the plows apart according to the condition of the plants. The draw-braces R of these inside plow-stocks are connected, at the junction with the stocks, by stay-rods T, with hangers U, in which they are adjustable to shift as the hangers P shift, and aid in holding the stocks in position. The rod Q and the hangers U are arranged-in the bars V, which are pivoted to the center of the front of the frame at W, and at the rear end are connected to the curved rod X, so as to slide towardand from the center of the machine, to swing the inside plows laterally to the row, for regulating them to the curvatures, and to correct the effect of irregular driving, tand to so shift the plows the hangers U are connected to the cranked foot-levers Y, which are` to be worked by the drivers feet as he rides in the seat Z.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The slotted frame pieces B, having curved rear sockets, E, in combination with the seatbar F, short axles A, and bolts O, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of yokes I M with the cross-bar J and pins L L, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of braces R, stay-rods T, and hangers U with rod Q, to support the plow-standards, as set forth.
GEORGE S. BROWER.
