Application filed May 24, 1924. Serial No. 715,748.
This invention relates to a funnel valve and has for its object to provide a device which maybe attached directly to the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, or at some point upon the pipe leading from the carburetor of an internal combustion engine to the intake manifold for the purpose of introducing air into the intake passage in order that said air may mix with the gas passing therethrough.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be utilized as a priming cup for an internal combustion engine, as a filler for gasoline lamps and torches, as a filler and release valve forsafety cans for holding gasoline, kerosene and othe inflammableliquids and as arelief valve for steam and hot water radiators. I
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of'the character hereinbefore set forth which will normally close the filling aperture in a container for liquids, the device being easily manipulated to open said aperture and in which means are provided whereby liquid can be guided into said aperture without danger of spilling and wasting the same.
The invention consists in the combination 39 and arrangement of parts set forth in the followingspecification and particularly as pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents a central, vertical section through a funnel valve embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows on said line.
Like numerals refer to like parts through out the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the body portion of the valve, the lower end of which is externally screw-threaded at 6 to engage a similarly screw-threaded aperture in a container or other device to which it is desired to attach said valve. The body portion 5 is provided with a passage 7 extending therethrough and the upper portion of said passage is internally screw-threaded at 8 to receive a stationary valve member 9. The stationary valve member 9 is provided with a bore 10 which is open at its lower end and provided with a valve seat 11 and said lower end of said bore 10 is closed by a valve 12 which engages said valve seat. recess 13 is also provided in the upper portion of the valve member 9, said recess extending inwardly from the upper extremity e ancirclimg said valve stem '15, the upper end of said spring bearing against the under surface of the head 17 and the lower end of said spring bearing against the bottom surface of said recess 13. The valve 12 is furthermore providectwith a plurality of small, shallow grooves 19 formed in the periphery thereof which form a means of communication between the'boreclO and-the passage 7' when saidvalve 12 is closed.
It will, however, be distinctly understood that certain embodiments of this inventionas set forth in the appended claim may be provided with a movable valve member in which'the grooves 19 are omitted.
The upperextremity oi the body portion 5 is countersunk at 20, while the stationary valve member 9 is provided with a conical portion 21 which is formed to lit the countersunk recess 20 of saidbody portion, and a funnel 22 is securely clamped in positionwithin said countersunk recess 20 by said conical portion 21 of the stationary valve member 9 and when said funnel is so clamped, the longitudinal median line of said funnel 22 is coincident with the longitudinal median lines of the stationary valve member 9, the valve 12, and the body portion 5, and the funnel 22 will furthermore be concentric with the various members of the valve.
The funnel 22 is provided with a suitable cover 23 and also has a small opening 2 1 located at apoint adjacent to the upper end thereof through which air may enter the interior of the funnel at such times as the cover 23 is in place upon said funnel. The stationary valve member 9 is also provided with a plurality of radially disposed ports 2') which connect the interior of the funnel 22 with the bore 10 of said stationary valve member.
A device as hereinbefore described when employed a medium for introducing either a priming fluid or a carbon removing fluid into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is attached to either the intake manifold or the cylinder head of said engine at a point where said fluids will communicate with said combustion chamber and in devices so employed, the grooves 19 are omitted from the valve 12 and the fluid is admitted to the combustion chamber by forcing the valve stem 15 downwardly and thereby opening said valve, the cover 23 and cap 1% being removed when so doing.
d here the device is employed for the purpose of introducing air into the intake pas sage of an internal combustion engine, the device is attached at any suitable point between the carburetor and the intake manifold preferably being secured to the latter and in devices employed for this purpose, the movable valve member 12 is provided with the grooves 19 as illustrated. During the operation of an engine equipped with this type of valve, when the engine is operating at high speed, the suction of the piston of the engine will draw air from the in terior of the funnel 22 through the ports 25, bore 10 and grooves 19 into the passage 7 of the body member 5 and from thence to the intake. manifold. At low speed, however, the suction of the piston of the engine will automatically draw the valve 12 away from the valve seat 11, thereby drawing air from the interior of the funnel 22 into the intake manifold.
When employed for other of the purposes hereinbefore mentioned, the device may, or
may not employ the grooves 19 as determined by the particular use for which the evice is employed. The tunnel 22, however, acts at all times where liquids are poured into containers to guide said liquid into said containers without danger of spilling and wasting the same.
\Ve claim A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a body portion provided with a passage extending there through and having a countersunk recess at its upper extremity, a stationary valve member mounted in said body portion and provided with a bore extending therethrough and having a valve seat formed at its lower end, said valve member also being provided with a conical portion aligning with the countersunk recess of said body portioma valve engaging said valve seat, said valve being provided with grooves in the periphery thereof, a stem for said valve slidably mounted in said stationary valve member, a head on said valve stem, a spring interposed between said head and said stationary valve member and normally holding said valve in its closed position and a tunnel surrounding said stationary Valve member and clamped by the conical portion thereof within the countersunk recess of said body portion, said stationary valve member being provided with a port connecting said funnel with said bore.
