TOOL KIT.
Application filed January lily invention relates particularly to lrits for mechanics tools, such as wrenches. Such tools come in assorted sizes and varieties, tor instance, every automobile mechanic has to have two sets ot wrenches tor convenience in the work which. he does. one set of cap screw wrenches and another set ot nut wrenches.' In addition to such wrenches. a mechanic is also obliged to use miscellaneous screw-drivers, hammers, l'iles, gauge- 1, scales, and etc. To facilitate his work it is very desirable that he be able to carry these about and that he be able to find or picl'out the desired tool with the least trouble and confusion.
I have accordingly provided a hitv which consists ot a tray having a centrally disposed 'series of graduated compartments tor the sets of `wrenches which may be readily turned about for convenience in getting. at the desired tool. This trayis provided with a carrying case andA the two parts are so designed and arranged as to provide in the case room not only tor the tray and the wrenches, but additionalspace ttor other tools as well as for overalls and waste.
1V is a longitudinal sectional view and side elevation ofv a kit embodying the improvements of my invention, showing the cover oi the case closed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the cover open.
Fig. 3 is a plan View ot the tray showing the handle broken away.
The body of the case 5 may be of any suitable construction, for instance, of sheet metal, and provided with a cover 6 which is preferably hinged along one edge. The body and cover may be provided with suitable locks, latches, or catches, such as 7, for holding the cover in place; The bottom oit the case may be provided with bosses S serving as Jfeet or supporting elements. The case may also be provided with some suitable form of handle 9 for convenience in carrying it.
Thetray 1 0 may also be formed of sheet metal and have bosses or feet 11 atthe corners so as to make it easier to slide the tray along and turn it around on the floor or bench. The tray is also preferably provided with some suitable form of handle 12 for convenience in carrying the tray when it has been removed from the case.
The tray is provided with a series ot graduated l cpmpartments termed, in this 24, 1925. Serial No. 4,410.
case, by concentric cylindrical walls 13, 1'1- and 15. The central cylinder is subdivided int-o a series of graduated compartments by partitions 16, 17, and 18 of diierentdepths. rlhe outer and inner cylindrical walls are spaced apart at intervals by partitions such as 19, 20, 21, 22,-23, and 24. These partitions are so designed and arranged as to provide compartments of graduated depth so as to accommodate two complete graduated series of wrenches. I
The handle may be vertically adjustable for convenience in carrying the tray, such vertical having the vlower ends or" the bail 25 turned inwardly into slots or grooves in the wall 14:. The handle may be prevented from tip` over by spaced lugs such as 26.V In order to enable the mechanic to get at the wrenches which are on the side ot the carrier which is away from him, I have mounted the wrench carrier so that itmay be readily rotated. For this purpose the carrier has an upper plate 27 which forms the bottom ot all the wrench compartments. AnotherA plate 28, which is secured to the outer wall 18, rests onV anti-friction bearings 29 in the bottom of the tray. The carrier is mounted so as to rotate about the spindle 30, which is secured to the bottom of the tray by means of a nut 31.
To prevent the body of the tray trom rotating when the carrier is picked up, l provide an intermediate plate 33, which is secured to the spindle 30 and therefore nonrotatable. This plate 33 is provided with one or more holes, such as 32, adapted to receive a projection 34C which extends upwardly from the bottom plate 28 so that when the tray is picked up by the handle it will rise on the spindle 30 and the projection 34: will enter the recess 82, thus preventing the body .ot the tray from rotating with respect to the carrier. When the tray is set down, the weight ot the carrier causes it to slide down on the spindle 30 and retract the projection 34 from the recess 32, thus permitting the carrier to be rotated.
In the cover of the case I may provide one or more drawers or slides 35 each held in place by plates 36 and provided with a handle 37. This drawer may, ot course, be opened only when the cover is opened, as shown in Fig. 1. Such a drawer is convenient for carrying spare parts and small tools and .the like. It will be noted that the aradjustment being permitted by rangement and proportion of the parts is such that the handle l2 fits between the faces ot the tivo drawers in the cover when the cover is closed so as to prevent the drawers from sliding' back and forth.
It will also be noted that there is considerable space in the opposite ends of the tray 10 for the carrying ot miscellaneous articles and that there is also considerable space in the case above the tray 10 for the storage of overalls7 Wastej or other articles `which it is desired to carry u .el in a kit.
The tray is preferably provided With a sleeve 38 Which surrounds the carrier so as to prevent dirt or small afticles such as Washers, keys, nuts, bolts, Wires. etc., from getting underneath and preventing rotation of the carrier in the tray. rllhe tray can be of any suitable material such as Wood`l libre or aluminum.
The case may be reinforced in any snitable manner as for instance by bands such. as 39 and 40. rThese bands can be formedV either by pressing the metal ontivardly as at 39 lor by separate strips l claim:
l. A tool kit comprising 'a case having al hinged cover with sliding d awel-s oppositely disposed in the cover and a tray mounted in the case having a carryingl handle pa'ojecting,Y between the drawers and holding them in position When the cover is closed.

7. A mechanicls tool carrier comprising a tray having a deep central compartment, parallel partitions dividing' it into chambers7 two lower surrounding Walls1 and fixed partitions of graded height between said Walls, forming Wrench-receiving,chambers ot graded. depths.
