- THEODORLANGER, F VIENNA, AUSTRIA.
LUTOILATIC AUXILIARY BLAST VALVE FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed October 8, 1924, Serial No. 742,445, and in Austria October 13, 1923.
This invention relates to an automatic auxiliary blast valve 'for locomotives, the valve of which is closed or opened by means of the piston of a steam-cylinder, in communication with the steam chest of the enboiler.
' 1c in the open or closed osition.
gine, on opening or closing of the regulator of the locomotive, whereby provision is .made for regulating at will or shutting off the auxiliary blast whether the regulator is in the known auxi iary blast valves of this kind the regulating and shut-oil valves of the auxiliary blast are disposed in the admission portion of the steam main of the However this arrangement possesses the disadvantage that, in case the regulating valve is closed-or throttled, the valve of the automatic valve is not at all, or only very slightly, loaded by the steam and is driven 2 upward with great force when the regulator of the locomotive is opened and therefore is damaged very easily. A further disadvantage of the known automatic auxiliary blast valves of this kind consists in that in the operative position of the valve, for example in the position in which the auxiliary blast valve is automatically fully opened when shutting the regulator of the locomotime, the handle for operating the device is disposed in the middle between its two to remove these disadvantages and to sim-v ing.
extreme positions, so that the handle has to be turned in one direction, in case it isdesired to throttle or shut ed the fully up erative auxiliary blast arrangement, or in the other direction in case the last mentwned arrangement is to be placed in the 0 erative position it the regulator is open, w ich re- ,uires a to and fro movement of the handle toithe prevention of smoke if during the starting of the locomotive it becomes necessary for the auxiliary blast arrangement to remain in operation until the beginning of the continuous air draft.
The present invention has for its objects is m communicationwith the steam-cylinder 4. 6 designates the valve, which is 0 erated by the piston 5. -At the upper ace the valve 6 is provided with a packin face 9, 1n order to establish a steam-tight c osure when seated upon the valve-seat 11 of the member 10. The valve 6 is furnished with a. seat 7 in order to establish a steam-tight closure with a seat 8 when the valve is inthe ppen position. The casing of the automatic valve is in'communication with the casing of a hand-operated valve, which comprises three chambers 16, 17 and 18 arranged in axial alinement. A valve 19 is disposed in the middle chamber 17 and may be adjusted with respect to two" valveseats 21 and 22 by means of an adjustable valve-stem 27 adapted to be operated by a hand lever 28. The upper seat 22 of the valve 19 preferably cooperates with the seat of an axially adjustable member 23, the movement of which is limited by an adjusting screw 24,
while at the bottom the said valve 19 ter- 7 I minates .in a disc 20, which extends into the bottom chamber 18 and the diameter of which corresponds to'the diameter of a channel 25,-establishing communication be-..
tween the chambers 18 and 17. In the illustrated position of the valve the channel 25 is fully open, thus permitting free communi cation between chambers 17 and 18. This free passageway, however, may be reduced the lever 28 to a higher position before abutting against the end of the screw 24:. A passage 14; establishes communication be-' tween the chamber 12 of the automatic valve valve, both chambers being dispose at the by adjusting the screw 24 so that the mem-. ber 23 may be raised by the operation of nects the discharge chamber 13 of the first mentioned valve with the middle chamber 17 of the last mentioned valve,.so that even if the valve 19 is closed the automatic valve 6 is fully loaded by the steam and always the locomotive.
' The apparatus operates in the following manner v In the illustrated position of the lever. 28,
the valve 19 rests on the member 23 and the position. On open-.
device is in the startingl ing the regulator of t e locomotive, steam is gently lifted on opening the regulator of I presses the valve 6 onto the member and thus shuts off the passage of the steam from a the branch 1 to the branch 2, whereby the auxiliary blast arrangement is stopped. On
closing the regulator the steam-cylinder 4 is emptied with res ct tothe steam chest of the engine and a1 ows the valve 6 to ass into the open position, so that the auxiliary device is in the fully operative position. After closing the regulator the extent of the auxiliary blast 'efl'ect is determined by the position of the disc 20 with respect to the channel which is regulated by the adjustment of the screw 24, so that the member 23 may be raised to a greater or less height in response to the operation of the. hand lever 28, as hereinbefore described. On turning the handle 28 to the ri 'ht hand side the valve 19 is forced-onto the bottom seat 21, whereby the auxiliary blast device is throttled or shut-off. In case the valve 19 is disposed in a throttling position between the two valve-seats 21 and 22, the auxiliary blast device remains operative when openthe illustrated position. Thus the advantage af the present invention consists not only in the most simple construction, but
ing the regulator of the locomotive until. the lever 28 is turned to the left hand side into also in the possibility of a steam-tight shutting-ofi' of the valve when the regulator is closed, further, in that the valve 6 is consaid housing forming nication with said inlet port, a chamber in communication with said outlet intermediate chamber between said inlet and tinuously evenly loaded by steam even if the hand-operated valve is shut and especiallyin that onopening the regulator the auxiha blast effect is continued unhampered until it is stopped by moving. the handlever, into the starting position. v
- I claim 1. An auxiliary blast valve for-locomo-l tives, comprisin a housing having an inlet port adapted or communication with a source of steam supply, an' outlet. port adapted for communication with the auxil iary blast device of the locomotive and a port adapted for communication with the steam chest of the locomotive, partitions in a chamber in commuport adapted for communication with. the.
j and outlet chambers be @VfilVE-COIItIOllOd openin v with the other of said rst mentioned openjfirst mentione openinggmeans for adjustingrt and-an outlet chambers, the partition between the inlet and intermediate chambers having two valve-controlled openings, a cylinder in communication with said steam-chest oommunil catin port, a reciprocable iston in said cylin er, a valve automatical y operable by- .said piston for closing one ofsaid openingsi I the partition between the intermediate an outlet chambers being provided with a valve- 1 controlled-ofening in axial alinement with the other 0 said first mentioned openings, an axially adjustable valve seat in said first mentioned opening, means for adjustin said valve seat, a doub e-acting yalve for c osing I either of said alinedo enings, and manually operable ,means or actuating said valve. j 2. An' auxiliary blast valve for locomotives, comprisin a housing having an inlet 0 port ada ted or communication with 0. source 0 adapted for communication with the auxiliary blast device of the locomotive and a operable by said piston for closing one ofsai (alienings, the partition between the interme 'ate provided with a- 1n axial alinement ings, an axiall adjustable valve seat in said said valve seat, a den le-acting valve for closin either of said alined openings, a threa ed stem for operating said double-act ing valve, and a handleverfor rotating j 1' whereof I hereunto afiix Stem- Intestimony signature.
