Description

CII
Patented Aug. 3, 1926.
lalfllllll? JOSEPH E. BADC-lER, MAX K. GOLDEN, AND VICTOR K. GOLDEN,
GAN, ASSIGNORS TO TEXTILE PRODUCTS COMBANY, OF' DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A COR- PORATION OF MICHIGAN.
AUTO ROBE CABLE.
Our invention relates to an improvement in auto robe cables and method of manufacturing the same, shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly described in the following specification and claims.
The primary object ofvour invention is to produce a neat, Well finished and attractive looking flexible robe cable for automobiles and to reduce the cost of manufacturing same over those now in use. In carrying this invention into effect a flexible Wire cable is employed which is fitted at predetermined intervals throughout its length with a plurality of arbitrarily spaced from each other. The cable is covered with tubular fabric linings braided over the cable and its enlarged lug portions ;*its diameter being increased as may be required by a plurality of coverings applied one over the other. An outer covering known in the textile art as chenille, the fibers of Which have a flexible metallic core, is then applied over the several linings7 as a finishing cover ;-a chenille matching or harmonizing in color With the upholstery of the automobile being preferably employed.
Another object of our invention is to construct the auto robe vcable continuous, to be afterwards divided into proper lengths for use upon automobiles of the closedbody type.
lith the foregoing and other objects in vien7 which Will appear as the description proceeds the invention further resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction here-inafter described and claimed it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed Without departing from the spirit of the same.
P In the drawings accompanying this specincation:
Figure l is an elevation with parts in section showing a Wire cable upon Which has been secured enlarged lug portions formed of lead or the like and arbitrarily spaced at predetermined distances from each other.
Figure 2 is an elevation 0f the device with parts in section showing the Wire cable and enlarged-lug portions lapping inter-braided coverings or linings.
or nn'raorr, marcar Figure is a similar elevationwith parts Y in section, showing /a portionof the enclosing covering broken away to disclose a plural number of linings covering the cable and ils enlarged portions thereby enlarging the cable to a proper diameter.
Figure is a fragmentary view of the robe-cable with an outer chenille irrappingg-the fibers of Which have a Wire core.
Figure 5 is a sectional vieW of a bracket adapted to receive and engage the enlargedV end of the auto robe-cable.'
Figure 6 is a detail view of a modification showing a sheet metal sleeve or thimble secured to a fragment of a Wire cable, in place of the solid metallic lug shown in the other vietvs to `enlarge the cable at spaced intervals. Y
Referring non7 to the letters o-f reference placed upon the drawings:
A, represents a Wire cable. B, B, denotes a plurality of lead or soft metallicV lugs mounted upon and engaging the Wire at spaced intervals from each other.
C, designates a braided fabric covering the Wire and enlarged portions. This fabric covering can be the product of a loom, a braiding machine or a Winding machine or it can be made in any suitable manner. D and D1, represent similar coverings respectively Woven over the first and second cove 1ings thereby enlarging the diameter of the robe-cable.
E, denotes a tubular chenille covering apand D1, the strands of which have a metallic core e. This covering may be made in any suitable manner.
F, designates a sheet metal sleeve or thimble to be secured to the cable in place of the lead lug or sleeve.
G, indicates a bracket formed of sheet metal adapted to be secured to the back of an auto seat H, having an end opening to receive the cable ;*the enlarged portions of which are held within, and by the vvallls of the brackets.
In the manufacture of this device a Wire cable is conductedfrom a spool to means adapted for applying asuitable volume of lead or other soft metal to the cable at arbitrarily spaced intervals. The cable When properly fitted With the lugs or enlarged portions is then covered with a plurality of suitable textile coverings applied one over the other. hese lining` coverings are then enclosed by a more `finished fabric such as chenille of' a color complementary or matching that of the upholstery of the automobile in which it is installed. When the cable is oit` suitable diameter and covered with the nished fabric it is out into proper lengths Ybetween the enlarged lug` portions thereby providing an enlargement at each end of each lengt-h oi robe-cable. then ready to be fitted with brackets 'for attachment to an automobile, as indicated.
Having thus described our invention what We claim is:
l. As an article oi manufacture, a Wire core, a plurality of pairs ot spaced lugs attached to said Wire core, each pair of lugs bein-g spaced a distance greater than the tween the lugs olf' each pair,
These lengt-hs are space between the lugs of each pair, a plurality of layers of fabric braided one tightly upon the Wire and lugs and the other outer layer braided upon the inner layer, and a linished covering the libers of which have metallic core'applied upon the outer layer of fabric. s
2. is an article oi' manufacture, a Wire core, a plurality of pairs of so'lt metallic rspaced lugs attached to said Wire core to 'forni enlargements'7 each pair ol lugs being spaced a distance greater than the space bea plurality of layers ot' labric braided in tubular form one y tightly upon the Wire and lags and the other outer layer Wound tightly upon the inner layer. and a finished covering applied tightly upon the outer layer of fabric.
In testimony whereof,V We sign this specilication. p y
