IMPRCVEMENT IN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,435, dated February 2, 1875; application tiled December 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:`
Be it'knownl that I, GEORGE C. MILGATE,
. of Council Bluffs, in the county-of Pottawattamie and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and do hereby declare -that the fol-- lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa` to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my stove.
' Fig. 2 is a plan view of the dampers above the magazine. Fig. 3 isa view of the plate under the ash-pan. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the top of the stove, the top plate being removed.
A represents the base of the stove, supported upon legs B B, and provided with a horizontal plate or partition, G, which forms a chamber, A1, below, and above said partition are vertical partitions a a, forming an ash-chamber, A2, and a chamber, A3, surrounding the same. The chambers Al and A3 communicate with each other by means of suitable apertures in the partition C. The lower chamber, A1, is divided by a vertical plate, b,
running from side to side, and having a suit able aperture in the center. The chamber A3 is also similarly divided. On the center of v the base A is the fire-pot D, provided with. a
grate, d, which may be shaken and dumped, as desired. From the fire-pot D the stoveshell E extends upward any suitable height, said shell being formed in any desired *man-4 ner to present a neat and handsome appearance. In the shell E may be arranged one or more illuminating-doors, f. In the front of the ash-chamber A2 in the base is a hinged door, h, with damper t' to supply upward draft when desired. Gr represents the stove top or cap, from which depends the magazine H into the drum or shell E. In front of the magazine is an opening, m, from the drum to the cap, and in rear of the magazine is a similar opening, m. These two openings are opened and closed by means of a sliding damper, I, so arranged that when the front opening, m, is closed the rear one, m, is open, and vice versa. The cap Gr and the chamber A3 of the base are connected by means of two hollow front columns, J J, and two similar columns, J J', in rear. The top of the magazine is vclosed by means of a damper, K, to the rod of which are attached two small dampers, n n, for closing the upper ends of the front columns, J J. These dampers are so arranged that when the magazine is closed, the dampers a a are open, and vice versa. From and along the rear edge of the mouth of the magazine is an inclined partition, p, dividing the interior of the cap, said partition being provided with a damper, L. -which are one or more pot-holes covered with ordinary stove-hole covers orplates t, and the whole covered by a swinging cover, M, surmounted by an urn or other suitable ornament in the center. N is the smoke-outlet in the back part of the cap G on top. The draft is letin at the door h in the front of the ash-chamber, passes up through the circular grate d,
through the fuel in the fire-pot D, and through the drum E around the magazine H. It then passes through the opening m into the cap, and down through the front columns, J J, into the chamber A3 of the base; thence through the plate Cinto the front part of the chamber A1, through the partition b into the rear part of said chamber. From here it passes up through the rear columns, J J', into the back part of the cap, and out through the smokepipe N.
For direct draft, pull back the double damper I, which closes the front draft, m, and opens theback draft, m.
When heating water on the top of the stove, the damper L is laid down, so, that the flame will pass directly under the boiler.
When filling the magazine the damper I is drawn back, the damper i in the door h closed.

The magazine-cover K is then turned when the dampers or column -checks n-Wwill shut oft' the draft in the front olumns, J J. The draft will then pass doWn through the magazine, thus preventing the escape of the dust and gases into the room.
The stove may be thoroughly cleaned through openings x in the top above the columns, and through an opening, y, at the base.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stove-base A, divided by partitions into a lower chamber, A1, an ash-chamber, A2, and a chamber, A3, surrounding the ash-chamber, the chambers Al and A3 being divided into front and back compartments, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the stove-base A, having chambers A1 A2 A3, as described, the fire-pot D, drum E, cap G, magazine H, and front and rear columns J J and J' J', all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, in a magazine-stove, of the cylinder E, magazine H, front and rear openings m m', the double damper I, and cap G, having a partition therein, all substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with the magazine H, cap G, and the front columns, J J, the hinged magazine-cover Kand column-checksum arranged upon a single rod and operating together, all substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the cap Gr and the front and rear columns J J and J J, of the partition p with damper L, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
