My present invention pertains to snow removing apparatus of theJ type including a scraper that is moved in front of a motor vehicle and is disposed at an angle to the line of traverse so as to scrape snow from its path and deposit the snow at one side of the said path. v
The general object of my said invention is to improve snow removing` apparatus of the kin-d indicated by the provision .of means for relieving the scraper of its overload, so that instead of snow piling -up in front of the' rear end of the scraper and impeding the progress of the scraper, the snow collected at said point is struck andyexpelled to one side of the path of the scraper.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following Vdescription and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which z- Figure 1 is a top,plan view illustrative of one preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail front elevation showing the arrangement of my novel rotary expelling means' relative to the scraper.

The scraper 1 illustrated is of the ordinary well known concavo-convex kind, though it may be of any other suitable construction compatible with the purpose of my invention. As shown in Figure 1 the said scraper 1 is pivotally connected at 2 with a frame 3 on the front axle of a motor ter that the scraper 1 can be reversed, and inl this connection I would have it understood that my lmprovement 1s carried on the scraper 1n such manner that 1t 1s feasible to shift the expelling means hereinafter de# scribed from the right hand end of the scraper 1 in Figure 1.to the left hand end of said scraper 1 and vice versa. also have it understood that the scraper 1 is suspended in conventional manner from elevated means on the front portion of the tractor. This latter, however, is not of my invention, and I therefore deem it unnecessary to illustrate the same, my invention residing'in the combination with the scraper of expelling means located in front of the rear end of the scraper in the manner and for the purpose before indicated.
1n accordance with the embodiment shown in Figure 1an appropriate support-- ing frame 7 is fixed to and disposed in rear of the uppery portion of the scraper 1, and the said frame 7 is provided with appropriate ybearings 8 to receive a shaft 9 on which is fixed a rotary expelling meansi. e., means for kicking or throwing the snow collected in front of the said end of the scraper a considerable distance at one side of the scraper path when the same is l would moved forwardly `in front of a motor vehicle. The said expelling means is preferably, though not necessarily, made up of a large rotary expeller 10 and a comparatively small rotary expeller `11, the latter being .disposed in front of the former and being designed to assist the large expeller 10 and to relieve the same of a considerable portion of the work when a heavy snowfall is being handled. The said rotary expellers 10 and 11 are shown in detail in Figures 4 to 7 and by reference to said views it will be understood that each of the expellers comprises a hub 1Q that is appropriately fixed to the shaft 9 and three equi-distant blades 13, th'e said blades 13 being designe-d to be moved in anti-clockwise direction and being provided at their backs with longituldinal ribs 14. rlhe shaft 9 is provided at 15 with a sprocket gear, and the said sprocket gear is connected by a sprocket belt 16 with tary ejecting means may be shifted on the frame 7 to adapt the rotary expelling means for use when the scraper is reversed yas before indicate-d.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in the practical use of a scraper such as 1 associated with my novel ejecting means, the scraper is moved in front of the motor vehicle with the result that snow in front of the scraper tends to move from the left hand end of the-scraper in Figure 1 toward the right hand end of said, scraper. As soon as the snow so moved relative to the scraper 1 is within reach of my novel rotary ejecting means, the said snow will be engaged by the blades 13 and thrown to one side of the path of the scraper 1 with the result that a collection of snow in front of the rear end of the scraper 1 is precluded and hence the said scraper 1 can be moved steadily forward for the making of a clear path. It will also be noticed in this connection vthat in virtue of the employment of my novel expelling means the formation of a deep ridge of snow at one side of the path cleared by the scraper 1 will be obviated which is manifestly an important advantage, particularly when it is desired to widen the cleared pathway by a scraper moved in rear of the one illustrated.
In the modification shown in Figure 8 Scrapers la at obtuse angles to each other are appropriately connected with a motor vehicle 4, and the rotary expellers 10 and 11 are arranged in front of the outer and rear ends of the said scrapers la. In said embodiment of Figure 8 the rotary expellers are carried on shafts 9a, journaled in bearings on frames 7a `fixed to and carried in rear of the Scrapers la, and the said shafts 9a are connected through universal joints 30 with rearwardly converging shafts 31. These shafts 31 are connected, in turn, by universal joints 32 with shafts 33, journaled in bearings 341x on the motor vehicle 4a. Carried on the said motor vehicle 4a is an auxiliary engine or motor 18a which may be of any type compatible with the purpose of my invention, and the'drive shaft 19a of the said motor is equipped with beveled gears 34 and 35, the gear 34 being meshed with a gear 36 on one shaft 33, and the gear 35 being meshed with a gear 37 on an auxiliary shaft 38 which latter is also provided with a spur gear 39,1neshed with a gear 40 on the other shaft 33. Manifestly when the motor/18a is actuated and the motor vehicle 4 is moved forwardly the rotary expellers 10 and 11 will bperate in association with the Scrapers 1l1 in the same manner and forI the same purpose as the rotary expellers 10 and 11 of Figure 1. Incident to the operation of the .embodiment shown in Figure 8, however,
the snow will be expelled to opposite sides ofthe pathway formed by the plow or pair of scrapers 1a and hence there will be no ridges or comparatively deep portion of snow left at either side of the course traversed by the plow formed by the scrapers la.
From the embodiment disclosed in Figure 8 it will be readily appreciated that my improvement is readily applicable to snow Scrapers or plows such as are employed in front of railway locomotives.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that notwithstanding the highly useful purpose performed by my improvement, the said improvement is simple and inexpensive in con-struction and is well adapted to withstand the usage to which snow removing apparatus is ordinarily subjected.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
The combination with a motor vehicle of a frame extending from and secured to the front of said motor vehicle, an arcuate apertured member secured to the frame and mounted thereon for movement in a horizontal plane, a frame carried by the arcuate r apertured member for movement therewith, a scraper secured to the front of the second'mentioned frame, a removable pin carried by the arcuate shape member and adapted for association with the frame first mentioned whereby the scraper can be adjustably arranged at various angles to its line of traverse, a motor on the frame second mentioned, a shaft also carried by the frame second mentioned, a pair of rotary blade carrying eXpellers of different sizes on said shaft and means between said motor and the shaft respectively for revolving said expellers.
