FLUSH TANK.
Application led December 16, 1924. Serial No. 756,301.
This invention relates to water closet Hush tanks, and it consists in the novel fea tures herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a tank structure adapted to be positioned at a relatively low level and which includes siphoning means for elevating the water in the tank just before it is discharged there .from and whereby the column of water may have bowl with which it is connected.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the `flush tank structure includes a tank body 1 provided at its bottom with an outlet pipe 2 which may be connected to a bowl 3 in a usual manner.
A Siphon pipe 4 is housed within the body 1 and is connected with the pipe 2. The Siphon pipe 4 includes an intermediate stem portion 5 andv side or branch portions 6. These portions are disposed parallel with relation to eachv other and the lower ends of the portions 6 are spaced above the bottom of the tank body 1. The intermediate portion 5 of the said'siphon is connected with the pipe 2. An overflow pipe 7 is connected at its lower end with the lower portion of the intermediate part 5 of the siphon and carries at its upper end a funnel 8, 'the upper edge of which is spaced below the top of the tank body. The portion 5 of the siphon member 4 is provided at its interior with a series of spirally disposed ribs 10, best shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
A water supply pipe 11 enters the tank body 1 through the bottom thereof and extends up into the upper portion of the tank and is connected with a pipe 12 having a valve casing' 13 connected thereto. The valve casing 13 connects with a pipe 14 which extends down along the intermediate portion 5 of the siphon member, and the sufficient fall to eifectually flush the' said pipe 14 is connected at its lower end with branch pipes 15 which extend up into the side portions 6 of the siphon member. The valve casing 13 is provided with an interiorly located seat 16 and a hood 17 is screwed upon the said valve casing. Levers 18 are pivoted upon the hood 17 and are spaced from each other at their upper ends and are provided atl their lower ends with angularly disposed extremities 19 which overlap each other as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings and which receive between them a valve stem 20. A head 21 is mounted upon the stem and rests upon the upper edges of the angularly disposed p0rtions 19 of the levers 18. A valve member 22 is carried at the lower end of the stem 20` and is arranged to close against the seat 16. A spring 23 is housed within 'the hood 17 and bears at its lower end against the valveinember 22 and is under tension with a tendency to normally hold the valve member 22 closed against the valve seat 16. A shaft 24 is journaled in the side of the tank body 1 and is provided at its inner portion with a `cam 25 which is located between the spaced ends of the levers 18. The shaft 24 carries at its outer end a handle 26 and by the use of which the said shaft may be turned. l/Vhen the shaft is turn-ed by using the handle, the cam member 25 spreads the upper end of the levers 18 whereby the angularly disposed portions 19 of the said len vers are raised and the head 21, stem 20, and valve member 22 are lifted so that the valve member 22 is lifted ed of the seat 16 and the water may flow through the pipe 11, valve body 13, pipes 14 and 15 and enter the side portions 6 of the siphon member and pass over the upper ends of the said side portions and enter the intermediate portions 5 and fall through the said intermediate portions, and the pipe 2 and enter the bowl 3. As the column of water falls through the intermediate portion 5 it is given a twisting movement by the spirally disposed vanes 10 so that the column of water which enters the bowl is in a turbulent condition, thus eflectually flushing the bowl. A pipe 30 is also connected with the pipe 11 and is also connected with a valve casing 30a. The casing l30a is connected with a pipe 32, the upper end of which is disposed over the funnel 8. A tank filling pipe 33 is connected with the valve casing 30a.
The aforesaid pipe 7 is connected at its bottom to a special valve of the type more plainly shown in Figure G, this valve being tapped into the lower portion oit the body 6 of the aforesaid siphon. Referring to the figure specified it will be seen that the valve embodies a seat 3l which is located interiorly of the casing 3l and a lever 35 is tulcrumed in the valve casing. The lever 35 carries a ball valve 36 at one end which is arranged to be swung upwardly against the seat. One end portion of the lever extends beyond the screw threaded end ot the casing and terminates in an angularly twisted por tion to be acted on by the down iiowing column of water. Then the valve 3l is in place the twisted extremity 37 extends into the interior of the body portion G off the siphon.
A rocker 3S is pivoted to the valve casing 30 and one end thereof engages the angularly disposed extremity or operating means for a sliding valve mounted within the casing 30a. A float controlled rod 39 carrying an appropriate float Ll0 is connected with one arm of the bell crank and it is obvious that as the float moves up and down according to the variance in the level ot' the .water in the tank, the slide valvel in the casing 38 will be operated to cut oli the water when a predetermined level has been reached, or to permit the rater to flow tor filling the tank through the pipe when the float assumes a predetern'iined low level.
The operation ot the device is as l'ollcws: Assuming that the tank is iilled to a predetermined level, it will be seen that by operating the handle Q6, the valve 22 will be unseated, pern'iitting` the incoming water under pressure to pass through the valve i3 and downwardly through the pipe 14 and then upwardly through the branch nozzles disposed within the down turned branches 6 ot' the siphon. Obviously, as these branches are also iilled with water to the normal tank level, the water under pressure issuing through the nozzles will litt the column ot water above to produce the desired inertia to start the siphonic action, the water overflowing the branches 6 into the central body portion ot the siphon and whirling downwardly through the latter into the bowl 3. TWhen the water in the tank reaches a predetermined low level the float controlled valve will open and permit water to be supplied to the tank through the valve 30 and the pipe 33. I must call attention to the fact that the downflowing column oiz water passing through the central part of the siphon l will act on the extremity 37 of the valve 3l for seating the ball valve 36 and preventing the entrance of air to the siphon to interfere with the operation of the latter. After the tank has emptied however, water which has collected in the overflow pipe will unseat the valve 3G to provide the desired water seal in the bowl.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is zl. A flush tank structure comprising a tank body, a siphon member consisting ol' one portion passing through the bottoni ot the tank body, and another portion having its lower end spaced above the bottom ot tank body, a water supply pipe having a discharge end portion disposed within the portion of the siphon member having its ends spaced from the bottom ol' the tank body and directed upwardly therein, vent pipe in the tank body communicating with the portion ot the siphon member passing through the bottom of the tank body, a valve normally opened in the vent pipe and having an actuating member extending into the portion wolf the siphon member passing through the bottom of the tank and adapted to be engaged by the discharging column of water for holding the valve closed while the water in the tank is being discharged.
2. A flush tank structure comprising a tank body, a siphon member located therein and having an intermediate portion which passes through the bottom of the body, and side portions the lower ends of which are spaced apart from the bottom of the body, a water supply pipe entering the body and provided with a valve, means `lor operating said valve 'from the exterior ot the tank body, branch pipes connected with said water supply pipes and entering the lower portions of the side portions of the siphon members, a valve controlled pipe located within the body and connected with the first mentioned pipe, float means for operating the valve of the last mentioned pipe, a vent pipe mounted in the tank and body and communicating with the intermediate portion of the siphon member, and having a valve therein, an operating member 'for said last mentioned valve having a portion there-- of extending transversely across the intermediate portion oi? the siphon member to be interposed in the path 0i the movement of the water in said intermediate portion so as to hold the valve closed.
3. A ilush tank structure comprising a tank body, a siphon member located therein and having an intermediate portion -which passes through the bottom of the body, and side portions the lower ends ot which are spaced from the bottoni oi? the body, a water supply pipe entering the body and provided with a valve, means 'tor operating said valve from the exterior oit the tank body, branch pipes connected with said supply pipe and entering the lower portions of the side portions ot the siphon member, a second pipe located within the body and connected with the iirst mentioned pipe, a second valve in the second pipe, means for operating the second valve of the second pipe, a vent pipe mounted in the tank body and communicating With the intermediate portion of the Siphon member, a third valve in the vent pipe, an operating member for said third valve having` a portion thereof extending transversely across the intermediate portion of the Siphon member to be interposed in the path of movement of the water therein so as 10 to hold the valve closed, a branch leading from the second valve, a funnel on the upper end of the vent pipe to which the last mentioned branch leads so that Water Will flow into the vent pipe for the purpose of opening the third valve as the momentum of the stream of Water flowing through the intermediate portion of the siphon member decreases.
