llt is an object of this invention to proyide an improved keeper for a door lock which will be an improvement over the keeper disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,487,- est, dated March 25,1924.
In my prior patent 1 have disclosed a keeper body having a recess opening upon the front and side faces thereof, which recess is adapted to receive a latch entering the keeper from the front side. In my prior patent l have disclosed walls disposed within inclined bores adapted to engage upon the top and bottom sides of the latch and prevent fretraction of the latch through the front wall of the keeper. These walls provide merely'a single point of contact upon the latch.
in this invention l have provided a keeper similar to that disclosed in my prior patem and in which cylindrical rollers are employed for engaging the latch, which cylindrical rollers provide a line of engagement upon the latch, thereby increasing the en igaging surfaces between the rollers and the atch.
lit is a further object of this inventionto provide an improved lock adapted to cooperate with a keeper having a recess opening upon its side and front walls, which lock will have a latch so mounted that vertical adjustment is provided, so that the latch may adjust itself with respect to the recess or groove formed in the keeper.
lit has been my experience that after a door is hung and the lock is mounted in the (lit Elli? door, the door frequently settles slightly so that with locks of ordinary construction the latch does not freely and easily engage the keeper. By providing a latch which is vertically adjustable, it is not necessary that the door be readjusted or rehungto enable the latch to properly engage its keeper.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment ofthe invention, where- 1n:-

0F PASADENA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF- ONE-F T0? v .lR-eferring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar arts,throughout, the body of the keeper, i ustrated in Fig. 4, is preferably formed of a rectangular section of cast iron, or its equivalent, having a groove gene'rally designated at formed upon the jamb face 11 thereof and extending from the front face 12 to the back face 13. A. rib 14 is formed integral with the body portion and disposed in back of the groove 10. This Y rib 14 presents inclined faces 15 and 13 which are adapted to cooperate with inclined faces 17 and 18 of the groove 10 to form inclined passages 19 and 20.
The plate illustrated in Fig. 5 is adapted to be secured around the body of the keeper as by a screw 21 (see Fig. 1-). An end 22 of the plate illustrated in Fig. 5 has inwardly bent portions 23 and 24 which close one end of each of the inclined passages 19 and as well as the groove 10. Suitable projections 25 are formed upon the portions 23 and 24 which serve to retain one end of each of the coil springs 23 and 27 within the inclined passages 19 and 20 in proper position.
A portion 28 of the plate which is adapted to be placed over the front face 12 of the body carries guide projections 29 and 30 which guide a latch 31 upon entering the groove 10 of the keeper.
The coil springs 26 and 27 carry shoes 32 and 33 which contact with cylindrical rollers 34 and 35 adapted to roll upon the inclined surfaces 15 and 16 of the rib 14 and to engage the top and bottom faces of the latch 31. It will readily be understood that v the latch 31 having entered between the cylindrical rollers 34 and 35 cannot be withdrawn from the keeper by passing between the lugs 29 and 30 because of the binding efiect of therollers upon the inclined top and bottom faces 17 and 18. By providing the rollers 34 and 35 a complete line of engagement is provided between each of the rollers and the latch 31, thereby increasing the engaging surface over the single point of engagement as in the balls in my prior patent.
Plates 36 and 37 are secured upon the jamb face 11 of the body by passing suitable screws therethrough which extend into the threaded holes 38 formed in the body of the keeper. These plates serve to retain the springs 26 and 27 together with their shoes 32 and 33 and the cylindrical rollers 34 and 35 within the inclined passages 19 and 20. The plates 36 and 37 also define that portion of the groove into which the latch 31 may pass. llf desired, a recess 39 may be formed in the body of the keeper which is adapted to receive the key-actuated bolt 40 of the lock. The ends of the plates 36 and 37 are fastened to the door frame F by means of screws 41.
It is seen that the improved keeper consists of a body having a groove extending across the jamb face thereof with inclined passages defined in said groove and that springs carrying shoes are mounted within the inclined passages, which shoes are urged by the springs into contact with the cylin drical rollers so as to urge the rollers into engagement with a latch entering the groove.
The improved lock structure which is adapted to cooperate with the keeper comprises a housing formed of a plate having at its top, bottom and back edges bent to provide a top 51. a bottom 52 and a back 53 for the housing. A front plate 54 is secured to the plate 50 by means of a screw 55 which is threaded into a bore 56 formed upon the plate 50. A shank 57 which carries the door knobs extends through the housing and carries a cam 58 having opposite wings 59-and 60. .A ridge 61 is secured upon the plate 50 by means of heads 62. A plate 63 has an elongated opening 64 therein which receives the ridge 61, serving as a guide for the plate 63 which is slidably mounted within the housing. Lugs 65 and 66 are formed upon the plate 63 and are adapted to be engaged by the wings 59 and 60 of the cam 58 so that the plate 63 may be retracted against the action of a coil spring 67 upon rotation of the door knob in either direction. A pin 68 is carried by the lug 66 and a pin 69 is carried by the back 53 of the housing, which pins serve to maintain the coil spring 67 in proper position. An opening 70 is formed centrally of the plate 63 so that the plate 63 may be retracted with the opening 70 receiving the shank 57 which carries the door knobs. Lugs 71 and 72 are bent horizontally with respect to the plate 63 and have apertures formed therein to receive the ends of arms 73 and 74 whichare rigidly secured to the latch 31. The arms 73 and 74 are slidable within the lugs 71 and 72 s o that the latch 31 may be vertimeager cally adjusted with respect to the housing of the lock and with respect to the keeper mounted within the door frame F. Coil springs 75 and 76 are disposed aboutthe arms 73 and 74 and serve to maintain the latch 31in a predetermined normal posi tion. A lug 77 is also formed vupon the plate 63 and is adapted to engage the end of a set screw 78 which is threaded through a face plate 79 of the housing. The set screw 78 provides an adjustable stop for limiting the forward or, extended movement of the plate 63 and the latch 31 carried thereby. The face plate 79 is secured to the housing by providing suitable lugs 80 and 81 upon the top 51 and the bottom 52 of the housing, and passing screws 82 therethrough. The ends of the face plate 79 are secured to the door D by means of screws 83 to permit the latch 31 to be vertically adjusted; An aperture 84 formed in the face plate 79 is considerably deeper than the latch 31.
As the door D is being closed, the latch 31 may engage the guide lugs 29 and 30; and if the latch 31 is not properly positioned so as to enter between the plates 36 and 37, it is seen that the latch 31 may vertically accommodate itself for the reason that the arms 73 and 74 are slidable within the lugs 71 and 72. The coil springs 75 and 76 serve merely to normally hold the latch 31 in a normal position with respect to the keeper and to the aperture 84. Upon rotation of the door knob in either direction, one of the wings 59 and 60 will be caused to engage its respective lug 65 or 66, causing the plate 63 to be retracted against the action of the spring 67 which causes the latch 31 to be withdrawn from within thekeeper. It will understood that although the latch will lie retainedby the cylindrical rollers 34 and 35 from passing out of the keeper between the guide projections 29 and 30, the latch 31 may be easily retracted by the plate 63 from between the cylindrical rollers 34 and 35, such movement being in a direction actually wlth respect to the rollers 34 and 35.
It is seen that the improved lock construction provides a vertically adjustable latch which is adapted to adjust or accommodate itself to the groove within the keeper which it enters from the front face thereof.
It is to be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. is

A keeper for door locks comprising a body, a latch receiving groove formed in. said body, inclined passages defined in said groove, springs disposed within said passages, shoes carried by said springs, and en-- gaging elements disposed within said passages in contact with said shoes and adapted to be urged by said springs into engagement with a latch entering said groove so as to retain said latch against movement in one direction.

A keeper for doorlocks comprising a body, a latch receiving groove formed in said body, inclined passages defined in said groove, springs disposed within said passages, shoes carried by said'springs, and cylindrical rollers disposed within said passages in contact with said shoes and adapted to be urged by said springs into engagement with a latch entering said groove so as to retain said latch against movement in one direction.

A keeper for door locks comprising a body, a groove extendin across the face of said body, a-plate extending around the back of said body and having-one end adapted to close one end of said groove, the other end of said plate providing guide projections for the opposite end of said groove, inclined passages defined in said groove, and spring urged cylindrical rollers disposed in said ti l passages adapted to engage a latch entering said groove and retain said latch against movement in one direction.

A keeper for door locks comprising a body, a oove extending across the face of said bo y, a plate extending around the back of said body and having one end adapted to close one end of said groove, the other end of said plate providing guide projections for the opposite end of said groove, inclined passages defined in said groove, spring urged cylindrical rollers disposed in said passages adapted to engage a latch entering said groove and retain said latch against movement in one direction, and a bolt receiving recess formed in said. body.
8. A door lock having a latch, mountingmeans for mounting said latch, means for moving said latch into projected or retracted positions upon a straight line path, and means permitting said latch to adjust itself perpendicularly to said path relatively to said mounting means.

A door lock comprising a housing, a slidable member normally urged .into 9X-" lid tended position disposed within. said hous ing, said member being retractable upon actuation of the door knob, and a latch retractable within said housing slidably mounted upon said member permitting adjustment of said latch with respect to its keeper.

A door lock comprising a housing, a plate slidably mounted within said housing and adapted to be retracted upon rotation of the door knob in either direction, upturned lugs formed upon said plate, a latch adapted to be retracted with said plate, said latch having arms slidably mounted in said lid lugs whereby said latch may vertically ad- 7 just itself with respect to its keeper.
11. A vdoor lock comprising a housing, a plate slidably mounted within said housing and .adapted to be retracted upon rotation of the door knob in either direction, up-turned lugs formed upon said plate, a latch adapted to be retracted with said plate, said latch having arms slidably mounted in said lugs whereby said latch may vertically adjust it self with respect to its keeper, and coil springs disposed about said arms for resiliently retaining said latch in a predetermined normal position.
