JOHN MALCOLM FERGUSON AND ARTHUR WLSON EVANS, OF SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
PREVENTING THEFT OF MOTOR CARS.
Application iiled September 22, 1924, Serial No. 739,181, and in Australia. June 19, 1924.
This invention relates to motor cars and The spring of the plunger is so arranged Similar vehicles but more particularly refers that on the severing of the lcontrol it autoto the prevention oi their use by unauthor` matically raises the plunger to allow ized persons. air to enter the induction pipe in large 5 Various devices have been proposed for quantities and means is provided for posi- `60 rendering the theft of motor cars inipossitively holding the plunger in that position. ble or extremely difficult but have not been' ln the accompanying drawings: successful as their effect can generally be Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the neutralized in a short time by persons condevice, and l versant with the mechanism of the car. Figure 2 is an extended perspective view 65 Now the object of this invention is to proshowing' the construction and arrangement vide a device which will render unauthoroit the parts.
ized use of the car., if not impossible, an uii- The admission of the air to the induction dertaking requiring a considerable amount pipe Lil-through the peripheral holes 3 in l5 ot ingenuity and time. the cylindrical inlet vessel 5 is controlled 70 A further object is to provide a device for by the plunger G which is manipulated by the purpose which during tho normal runmeans of the wire 7 enclosed in the small ning ot the car may be usefully used for tube S, the vessel 5 being screwed into or admitting extra air to the engine. Further otherwise aliiXed to the induction pipe 4.
the device will not hinder the free movement The vessel 5 is also provided with a cover 75 of the vehicle by hund, 9 towards which the plunger 6 unless re- Accordingly the invention consists in prostrained by the wire 7 is pushed by the vidio@ un @Xtra oir device of Suo-h a typo spring 10 to allow air topass through the that it. normally tends to remain fully openl holes 3. The cover 9 is recessed to receive and providing; means whereby this devicelie lOOSely fitting llOOCl OI Sleeve ll WlllCll 80 may be looked in its open position and alsois provided with holes 12 and ribs 13 to providing means whereby manipulation of @Jive it a rough Surface and Which is rotatthe device is rendered particularly diiiicult. ably retained by the cap 14 which is aixed The device consists of a cylindrical vesselv by means of screws l5 to the cover 9, the
o0 which is arranged to communicate with the heads of the screws being protected with a S5 induction pipe and which is provided with thick Coating of solder or the like 16. The a plunger and a number of peripheral air Cap ld is provided with a central boss 17 inlet holes, the plunger being provided with which receives the tube 8 and allows the a spring which normally tends to withdraw wire 7 to pass to theplunger 6. The necesit to allow air to pass to the induction pipe. sary movement is imparted to the wire by 90 The plunger is controlled in any well any well known device 18 which is situated known manner from the instrument board where convenient, for example, on the inoi the ear where a device for locking it in v Stiulnent hoard 19 of the car and which is the open'position is provided. -capable of being locked by a key 2O or 40 Enveloping the inlet vessel is a sleeve EDV Other Well known device- 95 provided with ribs or liutes and number of y ln operation the device 18 is unlocked so holes and which is rotatably attached to it that the plunger 6 may be operated to cut by means of a cap securely fastened thereto oli" the air supply in order to allow the enin such a manner as to render its 'removal gine to be started and the device is used difficult and laborious, in the usual manner while running. When 10o The apparatus is used for the supply of the car is left unattended the plunger 6 is eXtra air in the usual well known manner WhClllWH and lOClGCl ill that pOStOIl S0 and when ,the our is not in use the @Xtra that it is not possible to start the engine.
air device is locked so that the induction Should the pipe 8 be cut the spring 10v 5o pipe is in full communication with the atwould act to open the air holes 3 and because 105 mosphere thus rendering starting imposof the loose manner in which the sleeve 11 sible and moreover by reason of the. loose is fitted the whole device could not be fixing of the enveloping sleeve and its conremoved without considerable trouble in struction it is exceedingly diilicult to preremoving the solder 16, the screws 15 and vent the ingress of air. the cap 14. Moreover it would be difficult 110 to prevent air reaching the holes 3 by reason of the construction of the hood il andthe irregular spaces lett between it and the induction pipe.
As a Yfurther safeguard and to prevent manipulation by means of the 'free end of the Wire a slot 21 is formed near the lower end of the plunger 6 and on 'the exterior of the cylinder 5 a spring ring 22 .having .an end 2B inwardly projecting through the hole 24 is provided. llf the tube ,8 .and Wire lC? are cut, the plunger .6 is vforced upwards by .the spring l0 until the .end 23 enters the slot 2l whereupon the lplunger vis secured so 'that .air holes .3 are uncovered. The plunger cannot then be released .until .the 'Whole device is removed. ln .normal operation for the purposes @of supplying eXtra nir the plunger is never Withdrawn suiiiciently -to enable the spring 23 to enter the slot v21.
The device does not make .it absolutely impossible to start the engine, but the time .necessary to do so vvhe-n the device is 'fitted would .in mos-t cases prevent theft.
ln the .above description the `cap 14 is described .fixed in position by sere-Ws 1'5 and an `.overlying ring of solder. It is robvious lthat this cap may .be secured in any Well known manner as, for example, by rivets or yother equivalent devices.
Vile claim l. Apparatus for the purposes `specified Compris-ing fin ycombination with the indu'ction pipe of ya vehicle fengine "an extra air device yconnected with the induction .pipe vand :a loosely iittfing perforated sleeve `enveloping 'said device.
:2. The combi-nation with the :induction pipe of engine, of an .eXtra air device connected with :the induction pipe, means 'for locking said device anda perforated rough- 'ened .sleeve 'enveloping :said device.
