our-.reoaerar STEAM-PACKING CUTTER.
Application: filed Mayvlfi;
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in steam packing cutters and nioreuparticularlyito an adjustable steam packing cutter, the main object of the presentwinvention being. the provision of a device of this character wherein different sizes of packing rings may be quickly and readily cutandiat the same time, be accurately out.
Another object of the presentinvention is theprovision of an .adjustable steam packingicutter whereinitheends of the-packing- Willybe accurately :cut so that when the packingiisapplied to its proper position the ends willfit snuglytogether to prevent the leakage of steam or the like.
A further object-wot the invention is the provisionof a packing cutter having adjustable measuring means whereby accurate lengths; of packing may :be readily cut in accordance with thediametrical size of the packing. i
VViththe above and-other objects in view theinvention consists in the novel features in constructionuc'the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set uforthepointedoutin the claims and shownyin the accompanying drawings in which;
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a packing cutter constructedin accordance with my in vention jl Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional view taken on the line -2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3. is a detailed sectional view taken on the line-.3-.3of Fig.1.
Fig.4: is a transverse sectional View taken on the line ie-4: of Fig. 1.
Fig. ,5 isaidetailed sectional view taken on therline 5..5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. -6,,is a top plan view of the adjustable size gauge,
In carrying out my invention Iprovide a supportingbase 1:. This base member 1 may be, if found desirable, attached to a workbench or the, like or may be supported upon a. supportingstand especially constructed for supportingthe cutter; Mounted upon the base 1 and preferably disposedzcentrally of thewlongitudinakedgeslis a plate 2 and arranged in alignment with this plate longitudinallyof the base isa recessed portion 3.
Arranged upon opposite sides of the recessed portion 3 are the angular plates 4 and 5, the plate 5 having its horizontal portion 6 provided with transverse notches 7 in which the adjusting screws 8 are fitted.
1924. Serial No. 712,353.
'These-adjusting screws 8 are carried by the angular plate 9 the upright portion of whicn 1s provided with an angular slot 10 which is disposed in alignment with similarly shaped slots 11 and 12 formed in the plates 2 and 5. These slots extend entirely through the plates and through the base portion 1.
in adjusting bolt 13 is mounted in the base 1 and provided at its upperend with the bifurcated end formingspaced cars 14 and pivotally mounted between these ears is the handle portion 15. Pivotally connected to the handle portion 15 at a point adjacent the post .13 is the cutting knife 16. The main body of the cutting knife 16 is sub-' stantially rectangular in shape as at 17 with its end opposite the portion 1? tapering and provided with a cutting edge 18.
Slidably mounted within the recess 3 is a gauge plate 19 divided transv rsely into three longitudinally extending spaces 20, 21 and 22, each space having therein suitable reference characters and indicating marks designating the dili'crent diameters of steam packing which is to be cut in my improved cutter. As illustrated, the longitudinal space has suitable reference characters and indications especially adapted for use in cutting strips of a inch diameter and the other longitudinal spaces having suitable reference characters therein indicating different,
lengths ofpacking to be cut in accordance with the diameter of the size of the packing.
In order to determine the proper length of packing to be cut a suitable guide plate 23 is'attached to the base 1 at the outer ends of the plates i and 5 said plate having a central opening 21 throughwliich the various reference characters on the spaces 20. 21 and may be disposed in order that tie plate 19 will be properly adjusted in accordance with the size of packing to be cut. The inner end of the plate 19 is provided with an upstanding stop block against which the inner end of the packing abuts after the plate 19 has been set for the required size. Thus if the party using the device is cutting a inch packing and desires to cut the packing to form a 1 inch ring he will set the plate 19 so that the reference characters 1 in the space 20 will be visible through the opening 2 in the plate 23.
V In order that the packing may be quickly and readily removed from between the vertical portions of the plates 4 and 5 after being cut, a lever 26 is pivotally and adjust ably'connected to the upstanding portion of the plate f as indicated at 27 and the other end is provided with a hook shaped member 28 which when the lever is in a lowered position as shown in Fig. 4, will fit into the recess 29 in the base 1. The lever 26 is provided with a finger piece 30 which can be readily grasped by the hand of the operator for raising the lever upwardly after the packing has been cut so as to readily remove the cut strip from between the vertical portions of the different plates. 1 also wish to call attention to the adjustable clamping member 31 which is carried by the base and arranged adjacent the plate 19 whereby after the plate has been set to the proper proportion the clamp member 31 will be tightened to the plate to retain same against movement after the packing has been cut.
Arranged within one end of the slot 32 in the base edge is a curved guide plate 33 which is preferably disposed at a slight incline as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 and provided at its lower end with an arm 3-4;
which extends at an angle on the lower face of the base 1 and attached to by means of the clip 35. It will be noted from the illustration in Fig. 3 that when the tapered por tion of the knife 16 is inserted within the slot 32 the end thereof will engage the curved plate 33 and be guided downwardly through the slot 32, the movement of the point within the groove of the plate tending to impart a slight circular movement to the knife which will assist same in cutting the packing arranged between the plates. For convenience of operation a suitable knob 36 is attached to the outer end of the handle portion 15 to facilitate gripping of the handle for operating the cutting knife. Attention is also directed to the removable implement 37 in the form of a screw driver which is detachably supported at one side of the base 1 whereby the same may be readily accessible when it is desired to adjust the plate 5, the purpose of the screw driver being to release the screw members -8 to permit sliding movement of the plate 5.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple device of this character wherein various lengths of steam packing may be readily and accurately cut and the stop member 5 may be quickly and readily adjusted to give the proper length of packing.
While 1 have shown and described the preferred form of my invention I wish itto be understood that various changes and alterations may be carried out during the manufacture of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A cutter of the class described including a base member having an indicating slot therein, guide plates mounted upon the base, certain of said guide plates being adjustable laterally with respect to the base, a measuring plate adjustable upon the base between said plates, a stop carried by the inner end of said n'ieasuring plate, and a cutting knife pivotally mounted upon the base for movement through said slots.
2. A cutter of the class described including a base, guide plates carried by the base, one of said guide plates being adjustable laterally of the base, a measuring plate adjustable longitudinally with respect to the guide plates, :1 stop at the inner end of said measuring plate, a movable lever between the guide plates, a hook member at one end of the lever normally disposed below the upper surface of the base and movable in the guide way defined by the plates, and a cutting knife pivotally supported upon the base and movable at an angle through certain of the guide plates and through the base.
3. A cutter of the class described including a base, guide plates carried by the base, one of said guide plates being adjustable laterally of the base, a measuring plate adjustable longitudinally with respect to the guide plates, :1 stop at the inner end of said measuring plate, a movable lever between the guide plates, a hook member at one end of the lever normally disposed below the upper surface of the base and movable in the guide way defined by the plates, a cutting knife pivotally supported upon the base and movable at an angle through certion of the guide plates and through the base, said base having an angular slot therein, and a grooved guide plate arranged in one end of the slot for engagement with the free end of the cutting knife as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
BEN M. JOHNSON.
