The resent' improvement dispenses with the feed roll and pressure roll of the aforesaid Bernau mechanism, obviatesfthe necessity of providing a double post support for a ;device of this character, reduces the number of parts required and otherwise changes the Construction without sacrifice of efliciency and enables the mechanism to be used at points on machines of the character previously set forth where it is not always easy to install a supplementalmechanism such as is embraced in a tally strip feeder.
The present invention provides for feeding a tally strip in such manner that the items printed on the work sheet will also be printed on the tally strip, without the tally strip being carried by the platen and without requiring the use of a carbon sheet or strip, thereby enabling the platen and the work sheet to be moved from column to column without disturbing the tally Strip and also, permittingthe insertion 'orremoval of work sheets around the platen entirely independently of the tally strip.
As my invention provides' for mounting 'the tally strip independently of the platen and of the work sheet and for the automatic feeding of the tally strip, for a given listing of itens on the tally strip and work sheet,
the section of the tally strip on which said items are listed may be detached at any time, without interfering with the work 'sheet and thus a given list can be atta'ched to a group of checks *or vouchers, for instance, immediately on the compl'etion of listing and to- .talling them on the machine on which the {device is used.
In carrying out my invention I provide an improved pusher or feeder adapted to be automatically-moved one space at the completion of each operation of the adding or other machine on which the work is being performed, whereb the tally strip is automatically 'ed step y step on successivo operations of the machine.
The inventioi also contemplates the provsion of improved means for holding the tally strip to prevent it rom slipping, either whenitis stationary or when t is being fed by the pusher. Additional to the aforesaid means is means for disabling the tally strip feeder so that it will be inoperative when the use of the tally strip is not desired.
As with the mechanism of the Bernau invention of Serial No. 60,861, so 'with the is a duplicate of that made through the ribbon on the work sheet and, thus, the necessty for providing a carbon sheet in order to obtain an impression on the tally strip is obviated. The tally strip being tra-nsparent the impression can be read through it from its front side.
To illustrate how my invention may be applied to the 'adding machine whichlists or prints I have shown in the drawings' and described hereinafter so much of the Ellis listing adding machine as will afford a clear Understanding of the use of the invention and the manner in which the feeding mechanism is automatically operated by the mechanism of the adding machine. I wish it to be understood, however, that my improvements'may be applied to other adding machines which print items and' I do not, therefore, limit the use of the invention to the Ellis machine.
-I am aware 'that modifications maybe resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention and, except where specified in the claims, I do not limit the invention to the specific embodiment shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.

The case of the Ellis listin adding machine is designated E and on y the upper part thereof is shown. The settable keys of the usual key board are not shown. The platen appears at S, being movably mounted in a laterally' travelling carriage.
In the present instance I propose to utilize the movement of the paper feed level' P for the automatic operation of the feeding mechansm for the tally strip.
The printing grou is designated P and the inked ribbon, fe by any ribbon mechanism, appears at R. The paper table is shown at T and the work sheet appears at A in position around the platen S on the table T.
Reference may be had to the patent to Halcomb Ellis No. 1,197,276, September 5, 1916, combined adding machine and typewriter, for a further disclosure of the printing group P the paper feed lever P", and other mechanisms of the Ellis machine and further explanation thereof, is therefore, omitted A suitable paper roll holder 1 is attached to the case B and contains a roll of thin transparent paper which serves as the tally strip 2., The tally strip is guided horizontally from its roll and then upwardly in front of the ribbon R by a sheet metal paper guide 3 whose forward part is detachably connected to the ribbon fork 50 by a The tally strip feeding mechanism embodying my present invention is carried by a frame comprisin a bracket or. upwardly extendin arm 5 which hasa paper table 6 for the eed of the tally strip 2 thereacross. To detachably festen the arm 5 to the top of the case 13 a post 7 is fastened to said case by a suitable nut and has a slot in which the lower edge of the arm 5 s stepped, a guide-hole slot 8 being provided in the arm 5 to receive a fastenin screw 9. This construction enables the evice to b* mounted on the case B by the use of a single post in such manner that the tally strip fee mechanisn may be removed, or attac ed, as
desired. Furthermore, as the device requires but a single post for its attachment it can be readil a plied to any machine of the class set 'ort at the desired point, without interfering with other mechanisms or de- Vces thereof.
My improvements entirely dispense with the. use of feed and pressure rolls, the purpose of the invention being to feed the tally strip 2 by an improved pusher or feeder which appears at 10. This feeder or pusher is pivotally or swingingly mounted on a pin 11 one of whose ends is slidably monnted in a slot 12 in an ear 13 which forms a part of the paper table 6. The remaining end of the pin 11 is Secured to the ear 14 of the actuator or slide 15. The pusher 10 is maintained in contact with the tally strip 2 by a spring 16 which is coiled around the pin 11 and engaged with the pusher 10. The other end of. the spring 16 presses against the paper holder 17.
The paper holder 17 has ears which are carired by a pin 18 whose ends are mounted in the ear 13 and arm 5. The paper holder 17 has fingers 17' which bear on the tallv strip 2 and are normally held against it by a spring 19 whose ends are coiled about the pin 18 and bear against the edge of the paper table 6. The fingers of the paper holder 17 are spaced apart to enable the pusher 10 to play up and down between them. The pusher 10 has lu s 20 which are adapted to slide under the ugs 21 on the ends of the fingers of the paper holder when the pusher rises to feed the tally strip 2. When the pusher returns to its normal position, the lugs 20 slide u and over the lugs 21 and the pusher then 'alls back to its normal position. The arrangement is such that when the pusher 10 advances to feed the tally strip, the lugs 20 on said pusher engage the insides of the lugs 21 on the paper holder and cam the paper holding fingers upwardly so that they are out of contact with the tally strip 2 and hence do not interfere with the free feeding of the tally strip by the pusher 10. Immediately the pusher 10 has moved to a position where the lugs 2'0 are clear of the lugs 21, on the feeding movement of the pusher, the disengage'ent of the lugs 20 from the lugs 21 permits the spring 19 to snap the paper holder back into enagement with the tally strip. This occursv efore the pusher lO has started its receding movement. Consequently, the tally strip 2 is held, after feeding, and cannot accidentally slip.
The actuator or slide 15 serves as the *means for moving the pusher 10 to feed the tally strip 2. This slide has slots 22 through which pass head-ed studs 23, such arrangement constituting a guide for the actuator 15. A spring 24 connected to one of the studs and to the stud 25 on the actuator 15,
normally ret-racts the actuator and the pusher. v e a "When use of the tally strip is not required the actuator 15 may be latched in a raised, inoperative, position by a latch 26 which is pivoted at 27 and has a tooth 28 adapted to project through an opening 29 in the arm and to engage with the upper end of the v actuator 15.

As the pusher 10 advances, its lugs 20 contact with the lugs 21 and raise the paper holding fingers free of the tally strip but immediately the lugs 20 pass beyond the lugs 21, the. paper holder is released, and the fingers 'are then instantly reenga ed with the strip 2 due to the action of t e spring 19. When the paper feed lever P turns to normal position, the actuator 15 is drawn downwardly by its spring, whereupon the lugs 20 ride on the lugs 21 until the pusher finally resumes its normal position.
During the advance movement of the pusher 10 when the lu 's 20 are under the 1ugs 21 of the paper holder, not only is the paper holder released from the tally strip by a camming action so that there will be no interference with the feeding of the tally strip, but also, the paper holder then places a pressure on the pusher 10, causing the latter to firmly engage the tally strip, thus insuring positive feeding of the said strip.
When the tally strip is not needed, the actuator 15 may be latched in its raised position.
As the checks or vouchers or items are listed, the printing group P forces the tally strip 2 against the ribbon R and the ribbon R against the work sheet A which is around the platen S. The blow delivered not only causes printing through the ribbon R on the work sheet A but also printing on the tally sheet or strip 2 without resorting to the use of a carbon strip or sheet. The carriage and the platen can be moved or spaced to any desired tabulated position so that listing of the items on any part or in any column of the work sheet may be had. This in no manner interferes with the tally strip 2 as the latteris not around the platen but is independent thereof. As the tally strip is in line with the printing group P, so long as said strip is used, it will receive a duplicate impression of each item printed on the work sheet A.
hen the listing of any group or series of v'ouchers, checks, etc. is conpleted, it isunnecessary to await the completion of the entire listing as the tally sheet or strip can be torn oti by pulling it across the knife 31. thus enabling the listing on the tally strip for that particular group of checks or vouchers to` be at once associated with the grou W lat I claim is:
1. In a tally strip feed mechanisn, the combination with a pusher tally strip feeder, and means for aotuating said feeder, of means for holding the paper.
2. In a tally strip feed mcchanism, the combination with a pusher tally strip feeder, and means for actuating said feeder of means for holding the paper, said feeder being arranged to automatically release the tally strip holding means' when said feeder is feeding the tally strip.
3. In a tally strip feed mechanism, the combination witha spring actuated holder normally adapted to bear on the tally strip to retain it in position, of a reciprocatory tally strip feeder having means adapted to cam the tally strip holder out of engagement with the tally strip when said feeder is ,feeding the tally strip, and means for Shifting the tally strip feeder.
4. In a tally strip feed mechanism, the combination with a tally strip table over which the tally stri passes, of a spring pressed tally strip liolder having fingers which normally bear on the tally strip, a reciprocable, pivoted or swingingly mounted tally strip pusher or feeder which has means adapted to engage with the aforesaid fingers on the feeding movement of said feeder to cam said'holder out of engagement with the tally strip, said means being a lapted to ride on the aforesaid fing'ers on the retroi grade movement of the pusher or feeder, and neans for Operating said feeder.

7. In a tally strip feed mechansm, the combination with means for holding the tally strip, of means for feeding said strip,
said feeding means releasng the holding 15 means on the forward or feeding stroke, and said holding means releasing the feeding means on the return stroke of the 'feeding means.
