This invention relates to improvements in electrical condensers, particularly to types used 1n connection with radio recept-ion and transmission apparatusvin which lhigh po? r mately proper lposition by manipulation of a dial, final accuracy being obtained by an independent entity, vco-operative with said units and actuated on the micrometer screw principle.
A further aim is in the provision of an exceedingly sensitive `instrument capable of acting up to the `full 'capacity of the plate surfaces used, occupying a minimum of space and vrelatively inexpensive to construct.
These and other aims and objects, such as simplicity of action, noirliability of failure by disarrangement, compactness and general utility, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming partof this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevational partial vertical sectional view of an embodiment of the invention, the section being taken substantially on line 1--1 of Fig- Y ure 2.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the same, parts being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
The apparatus, as'sho'wn in the drawings` isattached to a dielectric panel or plate 1() as ordinarily used in such structures, and
consists of a pair of metal plates 11 and 12, respectively front and rear and constituting a frame held rigidly to the panel 10 by screws 13 and 13 in threaded engagement with a nut 14 acting as spacers between the plate 11 and panel 10.
On the inner adjacent sides of the plates 11 and 12, at their upper edges and central Of taeter-ea are bosses 15 and 16 ist? which yare' screwed adjustable bushings 17 and 18, held when in adjustment by ` clamp nuts 19 and 20.
A spindle 21 is rotatably mounted in these "bushings, one of its extending' ends 22 projecting through anopening in the panel 10 and having fixed on it a dial 23 provided with a twirling knob 24.
The central portion 25 ofthe spindle is preferably enlarged and square in cross section, its ends blending by curves into `the cylindrical portions and are adapted to make contact with the inner ends of the bushings 1T and 18 so as to be adjusted longitudinally in the frame thereby, and so as to adjustthe amount of "friction between the spindle and the bushings.
Fixed in spaced relation on the l square element 25 are a pluralityvof sector shaped, flat plates or rotors 26, the same being arranged in register and with Yrelation to the di'al23.
The fixed plates or stators 27` arranged intervening the rotors, presenting 'like profiles and inaddition are 'formed' with oppositely extending arms 27 which are fixed on rectangular conductor bars 28 fixed at their ends in insulators 29, as rubber or like, and held firmly between the plates 11 and 12 by rivets 30 or like fastenings.
Thus far, the description is not unlike that of ordinary apparatus for lthe same purpose,vthat invention residing in the added features, now following.
A binding post 31, being insulated from the plate 12 by insulator 29, is attached to and in electrical engagement with one of the bars 28, and another binding post 32 conducts current to the plate 12 and thence to the rotors 29. l
On the lower, outer side of the plate 12, at the center thereof, is a boss 33, drilled and screwthreaded from its inner side and receptive of a threaded stem 34 formed on a spindle 35, revoluble in the opposite plate 11 and extending through an opening in the panel 10, its outer end being provided with a twirling knob 36.
Fixed on the spindle 35 between the plates 11 and 12 is a sleeve 37, against which, clamped by the collar 38, is a plate 39 extending coincident with the outer area of the rotors 26 and backed by a relatively narrow plate t0 acting as a .rs-enforcement These plates and Ll0 are slidably engaged on guide pins al tilted in the plate l2 to extend inwardly and out oli the path of action ott the rotor plates.
It will now be obvious that the rotors 26 may be moved laterally within the casing relative to the fixed stators Q7, by adjusting the bushings 17 and 1S and that they may be rotated by turning the dial 23 so as to increase or decrease the relative superlicial areas in the usual manner, thus performing the usual function ol a condenser in obtaining desired results.
It will bc iturther apparent that when such adjustment has been made, that it is readily possible to make a line and final adjustment by actuating the lrnob 3G, causing the screw to move in the boss and actuating the plate 39 towards or 'from the outermost stator plate, giving, in eect, a micrometer adjustment and always presenting a desirable air gap or space therebetween.
As changes of construction could be made within the scope oi" the invention, it is intended that all mattei' contained in the foregoing description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is
l. A condenser comprising in combination with a frame, a plurality oit stator plates and rotor plates intervening, a spindle having threaded connection in said trame, and an independent vernier plate engaged with said spindle and movable in said trame to` ward or away from the other plates.
2. A condenser comprising in combination with a frame, a plurality of stator plates and rotor plates intervening, a spindle having` threaded connection with said frame, and an independent Vernier plate engaged with said spindle and movable in said frame toward and away from said other plates,
,and means for rotating said spindle.
3. in a condenser the combination with a pair ot end plates` a plurality ol stator plates and rotor plates intervening, oit a indle having threaded connection in one ot said end plates, an independent vernier plate, pins set in one ot said end plates lor guiding said vernier plate, said plate being moved by said spindle.

In a condenser the combination with a pair of end plates, a plurality ot stator plates and rotor plates intervening, of a spindle having threaded connection in one ot said end plates, an independent Vernier plate movable 'toward and away from said stator plates, the latter being insulated from the rotor plates, and the rotor plates and end plates being in electrical contact, means for adjusting said rotor plates relative to the fixed stator plates, and means for adjusting said .independent vernier plate relative to said stator plates.
