UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J'. KIRKPATRICK, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGN'OR TO THE BOECKH COMPANY, LIMITED, or TORONTO, CANADA.
, SHAVING BRUSH.
Application filed June 16, 1923. Serial No. 645,753.
This invention relates to shaving brushes and my object is to provide a brush that is sanitary, that can be readily sterilized without damaging it and is well balanced and no heavier than the average good brush.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illus- The brush knot 1 is dipped in a rubber solution and then set in a ring 2. The pur pose of the ring is to act as a binder to prevent the knotspreading while being set. The metallic handle 3 is hollow and is formed with a segmento-spheroidal portion l adjacent one end, the ring 2 being adapted to be seated within this portion 4: to prevent the withdrawal of the ring through one end of the handle. The preferred method of accomplishing this is to' provide a seat 5 at the end of the handle, which seat is formed by turning in the lower edge of the segmento-spheroidal portion. Adjacent the upper end of the portion 4; the handle is provided with a bead 6 and from this bead the handle flares outwardly to form a bell mouthed end 7. 7
The mode of assembling the brush is as follows. bristles with its ring 2 is passed tlnrough the bell mouthed end 7 of the handle and the ring engaged with the seat 5. It'is obvious that the knot ma be arran ed to directl V engage the seat 5 instead of indirectlyengaging it. The handle is then held in a vertical position and sealing means, pret erably molten lead 8 or other readily fusible Theknot of the brush hair or metal, is filled in or poured over the ring and thebrush knot. The handle is preferably formed from spun aluminum and the sealing means applied in a plastic or liquid st: e, has a tendency to adhere thereto. but
up su'.nciently far-to be helddown against the brush knot and ringQ by the incurving oi the sides of the segniento-spliero dal portion Abovethe sealingplug 8 the handle is filled with as suitablefilling material such powdered cork 9 and the end 7 is sealed as hereinafter described.
1 The bell mouthedend 7 is shaped to form a definite shoulder 10 against which a disk l1 may be seated. The end is closed by a cap -12'having a run which is inwardly rolled against the outer surface of the handle adjacent the. open end, the purpose.
of the dish being to provide formon which the cap rim and the end ofthe handle are inwardly rolled to prevent the hollow handle being crushed in during this inrolling operation. this method a substantially water tlght hollow handle is provided,
and it any-water does get in, the amount would be very small owing to the space being substantially filled with powdered cork.
' \Vhat I claim as my invention is A shaving brush comprising 'a' hollow metal handle; a brush knotadaptedto be seated and sealed in. one end of the handle;
and a cap adapted to seal the other endof the handle,-; the handle being filled with powdered cork to exclude moisture therefrom.
Signed at Toronto, Canada, this8th day of June, 1923.
HENRY J. KIRKPATRICK.
