IMPROVEMENT IN SUPPORTS FOR STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,243, dated January 26, 1875; application tiled July 16, 1874.
Toull` 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, GHARLns. J. Woond WARD", of the city of Brooklyn and county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supports' for Stools, &c., of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates, primarily, to means for supporting at any height the seat of an adjustable stool, and for quickly raising and loweringthe seat at will without turning the latter. Y
The invention consists in the employment or use -of a quick or lon g-pitch screw, loose in its bearings, with a friction-brake of any suitable form, to prevent the screw from turning. When the screw :is locked it securely supports the seat or other object, and when released from retention by the brake it rotates freely,
and permits the seat or other object to be' raised or lowered to any required extent.
The invention consists, further, in alifting treadle, to engage with the lower end or spindle ofthe screw, as means for releasing it, the brake being formed by a collar on the screw, in combination with a xed cushion beneath the same. 'p
Figure l is partly an elevation and partly a vertical section otl a music-stoel, illustrating` this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the sliding stem, detached. Figu is an end view of the same.
The drawing represents a stool which embodies ali the features of this invention in a preferred form.
The stool consists ot a base, A, of ornamental shape, terminating at top in a hollow standard, c, with a seat, B, having attached 'to its lower side by screws a stem, b, which is adapted to slide within the hollow standard c ot' the base A'. The standard a and stem I) form together a hollow telescopic standard,
.which is square in cross-section, so as to prevent the vseat B from turning. lVithin this telescopic standard a quick or long-pitch screw, G, is arranged, the same having a eylindrical spindle, c, at its lower end, which occupies a bearing, d, in the base A, and terminates in a conical point, c, and is provided with a transverse pin, f, to prevent its accidental displacement. The bit or threaded poring for said brake-disk la. A treadle-lever, D,
is pivoted between lugs j' within the base A, and constructed with a horizontal disk, It', to form a step for the spindle c c ot' the screw O. rlhe other end, l,- of the lever is turned upward, and projects through au aperture,-m, in the top of the base.
By pressing on this projecting point with lthe foot the screw C is lit'ted, so as to disengage its brakedisk h from the cushion t', and at the same time a frictionless stepbearing is formed bythe disk k ofthe lever l), in connection with the conical point c of the-screw-spindle. The screw is thus rendered free to turn, and permits a free elevation or depression of the seat B. When the foot is removed from the treadle the screw drops instantly, and is simultaneously locked by its brake, and securely supports the seat at the point to which it was adjusted.
In this illustration a single screw is employed; but one may be applied to each leg or lcorner ot' a chair or table, for instance, in
which latter case the standards would not require to be square or angular, but might be round in cross-section, as the multiplication ot' .the points of support would prevent the seat or corresponding object from rotating.
Another proposed modification consists of a spur or positive brake or clutch, in lieu of the described friction-brake, as means for lock ing the screw.
The seat of a stool embodying this invention could be swiveled to its stem, so as to rotate independently, without detriment; but an important advantage ot' this invention is the obviation ot' any necessity for leaving or turning the seat in order to adjust it.
Another advantage consists in the facility it atfords for applying adjusting-screws to multiple supports.
Another advantage over the ordinaryr adjusting-screws consists in the rapidity of the adjusting movements.
The base A of the illustrative stool may be cast-iron or wooden. The seat B may be `of wood, upholstered in any approved style. The stem ZJ, screw C, and lever D may be, preferably, cast of iron and malleableized; or the screw may be of steel.
. The primary subject-matter of this invention is designed for general application as new means for supporting' at any height the seats or tops of stools, chairs, or tables, or windowsash, or other objects which require to be adjustable as to height.
The following is claimed as new, namely:
,ll A quick or long-pitch screw, C, loose in its bearings, in combination with a non-rotary screw C, havin g the step-spindle c e and brake disk h the cushion t', and the treadle-lever D, having the step-disk k and projecting end l, substantially as specified, to constitute an improved adjustable stool. y
