To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM. PL PATTON and CHARLES D WALTERS, of the city of Harrisburg, county of Dauphin and- State of Pennsylvania; have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Goal Carts orWagons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same andits manner of operatiomreference being made to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification and thelletters-of refer= ence marked thereon.
a In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a coal-cart constructed upon our Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the improved. plan.- body of the cartwith the wheels-removed. Fig.3-isu'iewofper-t' peculiar construction with a cart-body that has its bottom side inclined or. pitched from front to rear, and is provided with hinged or swinging gates at its rear end, and also is furtherprovid'ed with a longitudinal partition or division wall thatrseparates the body into two equal receptacles, substantially as-is hereinafter set forth, Our invention; further. consists in the use of a peculiar locking-catch, in combination with the "sections of the rulejointed folding chute, substantially as is hereinafter shown and described.
The cart-body- A(see Fig. 1) is -mfie of either wood or iron, and is-of proper size to contain a ton of coal. It has its bottom side pitched or inclined from front to rear end, as. is shown. It is mounted upon two wheels, B. These should ofsuch relative diameter as to elevate the,
'y A a proper height. Said body is so si'on. :height.
of the folding chute, and shows their jointed be of proper strength and purely attached to the axle, and issupported at its front end by the bolster b, that is framed into the shafts D, said shafts being. rigidly fastened to the cart-axle.
parts, as is shown in Fig. 2. "At therear end' from .their upper ends as a point of suspenofthe rear end of the cart-body, or they. may be-hinged to a bar that isrigidly secured across the rear enda proper distance from the upper edge of the body A. In the latter case the gate F is hinged above the gates e a, so as to fold down upon them,"as is.
-in..Eig.5. Thegates, e. 'e are seciued in place by the cross-bars s s that are pivotedv to them in such amanner as to permit vibration and allow their ends to catch in no'tchesymadei for their reception, as shown at r, Fig.6. "The upper door or gate F (shown in Figs. 4 and 5) is provided to facilitate the;loadingof the cart. It canbe secured in a closed positionby latches or other proper device, Upon. the rear end'ofthe cart-body A a short trough or delivery-spout, 0, is rigidly attached. It is made of sheet metal, and is given the form substantially as is shown in the .difierent fig ures. As willThe'observed, it is made the fullwid th of the cart-body at the point of junction therewith. The sides from thatpoint are drawn in towardeach other somewhat as the outer end is neared, as is shown in Fig. 2 at 'i a.
The chute or conveying-trpugh T is constructed of sheet metal of a proper thickness to secure-rigidity. It'is composed of two or more sections, c-d. These are secured to 'gether by a rule-joint,as is shown in Fig. 3'.
By an inspection of said figure it will be seen that 'the end of section 0 -is-causedg'tai pfllj'ect forward beneath the end of section d in such a manner as to act-as a stop or abutment,.ai1d prevents the sections from being opened past the" proper point, .or. when the bottoms of the sections are in a straight line with each other, thus forming a rule-joint connection between them. When the sections c -'d are opened out in a straight line they form a continuous conveying-trough, the
