My invention relatesv to tape reels, especially of that type, in which the drum is rotated by means of a handle hinged to the front of the drum and capable of occupying both an extended and folded position radially. llVhen in folded position the crankv is usually in close contact with the front of the drum, and a push pin is slidably mounted at the center of the drum for pushing the crank outward for releasing it from its latch. Que of the objects-of my invention is to simplify the formation of the pin and theconstruction at the center of the drum. Another object is to simplify the mechanism for attaching the inner end of the tape to the drum.
I accomplish illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which* i Figure 1 is a front assembly view of the article, certain portions being broken away in order that the view may be drawn on a large scale.l

A crank 24 is hinged by a pin 26 to the front 22 ofthe drum in the usual manner. It is capable of occupying an extended position as shown yin full lines in Figures 1, 2,
my objects by the mechanism 3 and 4, and also a folded position as shown in dotted lines Figure 2. In this latter position it -isin contact with the front of the drum and its handle 28 `is engaged by a latch 30 which yieldingly locks the crank in-this position. The latch is in the form of a tongue struck from the cylindrical portion 18 of the drum and the handle passes into it and through ari-opening 32 in the front of the drum. The drum has a central opening 36 at the front for supporting the front extension 38 of a drum 34. This ex tension is peened over at the margin, and by this means is rigidly secured to the drum.
The rear end of the hub is supported by a sleeve40 shownl in section in Figure 2 and in perspective in Figure 6.'` vThe sleeve surrounds the hub and is crimped to it in order to securely hold the hub and the sleeve. together as one piece. At its rear end the sleeve projects out through an opening 42 in Athe rear wall of the casing, and has a flangef 44 which lies adjacent to the outer surface ofthe rear wall of the casing. The sleeve ts' loosely enough in said rear wall to enable it to rotate freely.
The hub is centrally chambered to receive a push pin for releasing the crank from latch 30. This pin is formed in three sections. The body section 46 is at the middle. A reduced section 48 projects out through an opening 50 in the front of the hub and another portion 52 projects out through the back of'the hub. The front of the hub forms a stop for limiting the forward movement of the pin. At the rear the hub has a flange 54 which is pressed inward Sulliciently to engage the shoulder 56 at the junction of the body portion with `the reA duced portion 52 of ,the pin. This flange is bendable inthe sense that the flange may be pressed or swaged inward as shown. This greatly simplifies the construction for it avoids the need of any nuts or similar stops 'which would add to the complexity of the construction.

lll() The tape 60 has an anchoring head 62 which is wider than,the normal width of the tape and is adapted to enter a slot 64 arranged circumferentially in the cylindrical portion 18 of the drum. The slot is somewhat longer than the lwidth of the head, and the result is that the parts may beassembled by inserting the head in the slot lengthwise and then rotating it degrees, whereupon ywhen the'crank is rotated it will rotate the drum, which makes a running tit with the front wall lO of the casin'g` while the cylindrical portion of sleeve 40 makes a running tit with ,the rear wall 1Q of the casing. Y
Then the device is not in -use the crank will be swung to folded position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, in which position the latch 30'will take hold and'prevent the crank from swinging away from the folded position. When it is desired to use the device, the operator presses upon the rear end of the push pin which in turn pushes outward on the crank and releases it so that the `operator may readily swing it to the acting or extended position shown in full lines.
It will be observed that the parts are few in number and are very simply and durably constructed. The connection of the hub to the' drum is especially simple, the' forward end of the hub being merely swaged or peened over the drum. This dispenses vwith any threading operatioirand with the use of lock nuts or similar devices. The construction at the rear of the hub is also very simple for thev Hange 54 ofthe hub is not pressed inward until after the body of the pin has been inserted, after which the pin is securely retained and no threading operation is required nor any lock nuts or similar devices. The support for the rear end of the drum is also simple for here again threading is dispensed with and the sleeve is merely crimped or pressed onto the hub. The parts may be assembled 'from the back of the casing, after which the front end of the hub is peened over at the rim and the parts will be securely held.
It will be noted that the means for attaching the tape to the drum are also simple and dispense with rivets, screws and like elements. Furthermore the tape is readily detachable at all times.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y

A tape reel having a casing for the tape, a drum rotatably mounted within the casing for supporting the tape, a crank pivoted to the drum for rotating it, the crank being hinged to theffront of the drum whereby it may occupy either an extended or. a folded position, radially, a hub arranged axially at the center of the drum, a push i slidingly mounted within the.hub in an ial direction for pushing the crank outwaiff. from its folded position, and means on the hub for limiting the forward movement of the pin, the pin having a shoulder and the hub having a bendable flange at the rear end pressed radially inward for engaging the shoulder to thus retain the pin within the hub.
Q A tape reel having a casing for the tape, a drum rotatably mounted within thc casing for supporting the tape, means for rotating the drum, a hub arranged axially at the centerof the Vdrum and attached to the front of it. and a sleeve secured-to the rear of the hub for supporting it, the rear wall of the casing having an opening and said sleeve being journaled in said opening and having a flange -engaging the outer surface of the rear wall for preventing endwise movement of the hub in a forward direction.

A tape reel having a casing,I a drum rotatably mounted within the casing for supporting the tape, means for rotating the drum, a hub arranged axially at the center of the drum, the forward end of the hub passing through anl opening in the front of the drum and being peened over the margin of said opening, and a sleeve crimped upon the hub to thereby become fastened to it, and the rear end of the sleeve being journaled in an opening in the rear wall of the casing and having a flange making running Contact with the outer surface of the rear wall of the casing.4
4. A tape reel having'a casing, a rotatable drum journaled within the casing for supporting the tape, a crank hinged to the front of the drum and capable of occupying either an extended or a folded position in contact with the front of the drum, a hub secured at its front end to the drum and having means at the rear end whereby it is rotatably supported within the casing, the hub being ehambered and having reduced 'openings at each'end, and a push pin having a body Yslidable axially within the chamber'of the hub,
one reduced end of the pin projecting forward toward the crank for pressing it outward, and the other reduced endprojecting rearward out through the hub, the rear end of the hub having a thin flange pressed radially inward to confine the body of the pin within the hub.
