This invention is a machine for forming strips of soft material capable of being used as padding for stuffed seats, for packing, and for various other purposes. One of the objects of the invention is" to provide a machine of the character mentioned by which a strip of cotton or similar soft material may be folded longitudinally to provide a relatively thick soft padding which will retain its resilience and not become disarranged. A further object is to provide means for feeding ananchoring strip in conjunction with the padding material, and enclosing the anchoring strip with- .in said padding material and permanently uniting the surfaces of said anchoring strip to contiguous portions of said padding material.
A further object is to provide means for folding the edges of the anchoring strip to reinforce the latter and to apply adhesive to the reinforced strip, subsequently'enclos ing the same within the padding material. while the adhesive retains its active properties.

To the left of feed rollers *3 and 4a shaft 14 extending transversely of the frame 1 is journaled in bearings 15-45 on top of said frame, on which shaft are secured a pair of horizontal cones 1616 converging in ardly toward each other. At the left of c0nes'16-'16 an idler roller 17 extending transversely of the frame 1 is journaled in bearings 18-18 on top of said frame." A pair of vertical shafts 19-19 are journaled in bearings 20 and 21 on the frame 1 at the left of idler roller 17, on the upper ends of which shafts are secured a pair of cones 2222 which converge downwardly, the lower portion of said cones resting to the left of said idler roller. A pair of superimposed paper feed and pressure rollers 23 and 24 extending transversely of the frame 1 are ournaled to the left of cones 2222 in standards25-25 on top of said frame, the roller 24 being journaled in blocks 26 mounted to slide vertically in said standards so that said roller may be adjusted vertically with relation to the roller'23. A shaft 27 extending transversely of the frame 1 is journaled forwardly of'rollers 23 and 24 in bearings 2828 on top of said frame,
on which shaft are secured a pair of horizontal cones 29 29 which converge inwardly toward each other. A plate 30 is mounted on top of the frame 1 transversely 29 through which plate extends a tubular former 31, the right end of which diverges so that the fibre may'enter easily therein from said cones. A pair of vertical shafts 3232 are journaledin bearings 33 and 34 on the frame 1 at the left of the plate 30. on the upper ends of which are secured cones 3535, which cones converge downwardly and rest at the left of said plate. A pair of superimposed delivery rollers 36 and 37 are journaled transversely of the frame 1 in standards 3838 on top of the frame at the left end thereof, the upper roller 37 being journaled in blocks 39-39 mounted to slide vertically in said standards so that the roller 37 may be adjusted vertically with relation to the roller 36.
A shaft 40- is journaled transversely of the frame 1 near the right end of said frame and below the,top thereof, on one end of which shaft is secured a pulley 41 through which power may be applied to drive said shaft. On the other end of the shaft 40 is secured a sprocket 42 and a sprocket 43 .is secured on one journal of roller 3 over which sprockets extends a chain 44. A sprocket 45 is secured on the other journal of feed roller 3 and a sprocket 46 is secured on one end'of'conveyer roller 7 over which sprockets extends a chain 47. A pair of pulleys 48-48 are secured on the shaft 40.
A pair of pulleys 49-49 are secured on. shafts 19-19. A pair of pulleys 5050 aresecured on shafts 3232. A belt 51 extends over each pulley 48 and a pulley 49. A'belt 52 extends over each pulley 49 and a pulley 50. Asprocket 52 is secured on the journal of feed roller 3 and a sprocket 53 is secured on the journal of paper-feed and pressure roller 23 over which sprockets extends ,a

A sprocket55 is also secured on roller 36 and a sprocket 5 9 is secured on onethe journal of paper feed and pressure roller 23 and a sprocket 56 is secured on the journal of delivery roller 36 overwhich sprockets extends a chain 57. A sprocket 58 is also secured on the journal of delivery end of shaft 27 over which sprockets extends a chain 60. A pulley 61'is secured on the other end of shaft 27 and a pulley 62 is secured on one end of shaft 14 over which pulleys extends a belt 63. A pulley 64 is secured on the shaft 14 and a pulley 65 is secured on the idler roller 17 over which pulleys extends a belt 66. A glue tank is mounted on standards 7171 on top of the frame 1 near the right end of said frame.
A paper supply roller 75 is journaled in a bracket 76 on the right wall of the tank 70 on which roller is wound a strip of paper 77. An idler roller 78 is journaled in the lower part of the tank 70 near the right end thereof under which roller extends the strip 77. A feed roller 178 is journaled in the upper part of the tank 70 at the left end thereof and a feed roller 79 is journaled above the roller 178 in a bracket 80 secured to the left end wall of said tank, between which feed rollers the paper strip 77 extends from the under side of the idler roll er 78. From the feed rollers 178 and 79 the strip 77 extends downwardly between the feed rollers. 23 and 24. A selvedging device is mounted on the inside of the tank 70 on the right end wall thereof, which device includes two superimposed wire members 81 and 82, the member 82 being bent U-shape with a loop 83 between its arms and secured at the ends of its arms to said wall, said loop extending across the intermediate section '84 of the member 81 so that the strip 77 extends through the loop and against the inside of said intermediate section of member 81, whereby the edges of the strip are bent over inwardly upon the strip byv said loop and said bent edges pressed firmly against the strip by their e11- gagem'ent with said intermediate section of member 81. On the journal of paper feed and pressure roller 23 is secured a sprocket is also secured a pulley 94'and on the journal of delivery roller 36 is. secured a pulley 95 over which pulleys extends abelt 96. Onthe shaft 92 is secured a gear 97 which meshes with a gear 98 journaled in the upper end of oneof the standards. An arm 99 is fulcrumed on a pin near the end of a bracket 100 on the upper end of said standard, on which arm are two pawls 101 and 102 for respectively engaging a notch 103 in one en of roller 93 and the gear 98. The pawl 101 is rigid with the arm 99 while the pawl 102 is adapted to turn about the pin which pivotally connects the same to the arm 99. An oscillating stand104 is fulcrumed at its lower end at 105 to a base 106 and carries a table 107 on its upper end, in which table is a slot 108 extending from one side thereofto receive a pair of shears 109 mounted on the upper end of a standard 110. A pair of feed rollers 111 and 112 are mounted on the table 107 forwardly of the slot 108. A arm 113 is pivoted to the stand 104 and rests upon the armof an eccentric 114 mounted on a shaft 115 journaled in standard 110. The arm 113 has an opening 116 in which fits a pin 117 secured on the lower endof a rod 118 which is connected to the end of the arm 99. Said pin 117 normally rests upon the arm of eccentric 114 but saidarm has an opening 119 adapted to.
register with opening 116 to receive said pin to couple the eccentric and arm 113 together so that said eccentric may swing the stand 104 and table 107 to the left into such position that the shears 109 register with the' the side edges of the fibre are bent over upon the body thereof as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and said bent edges are flattened down as the fibre passes between the feed and pressure rollers 23 and 24. The paper strip 77 with its selvedged edges'and covered with glue, is fed by the feed and pressure rollers 23 and 24 upon the fibre between the bent edges thereof and is glued to the fibre, the roller 24 being reduced in diameter midway between its ends under which reduced portion said paper strip extends and is guided thereby. The feed and pressure rollers 23 and 24 feed the fibre with the paper strip glued therein between the cones 2929, through the tubular former 31, between the cones 3535 and between the delivery rolls ers 36 and 37, during which operation'the' folded edges of the fibre as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 are folded over upon the paper strip 77, as shown in Fig. 10, and said folded edges are compressed aginst the upper side of the paper strip 77 by the delivery rollers 36 and 37 and glued to said upper side of the strip, which strip is entirely covered with glue when it passes through the glue tank 70. From the delivery rollers 36 and 37 the padding extends over roller 93 and between feed rollers 111 and 112 and is fed by said feed rollers over the table 107 across the slot 108. During each revolution of the roller 93 the pawls 101 and 102 engage the slot 103 and gear 98 respectively and stop said roller and the lowering of arm 99 lowers the pin 117 into opening 119 in the arm of eccentric 114 which opening registers at this time with the opening 116, whereby the eccentric and arm 113 are coupled together so that the eccentric swings the stand 104 and table 107 into such position that the shears 109 by means of eccentric 121 out off the padding at a suitable length. By this time the teeth of gear 98 raise the pawl 102 out of engagement therewith and the pawl 101 out of engagement with notch 103 and raise the arm 99, rod 118 which raises the pin 117 out of opening 119 and allows the stand 104 and table 107 to swing back to normal position.
The padding forming machine runs continuously, even during the cutting operation. A small loop is formed in the padding during the periods of rest of the roller 93.
T he advantages of the invention will be readily ap arent. It will be articularly observed t at by means of t e machine therein described a very simple and efficient form of padding. strip is rapidly manufactured and that the strip so produced is capable of many uses. An important use is that of stuffing the backs of autombile seats and stufied furniture, the padding possessing the characteristic that it does not readily lose the original elasticity of the component parts.
7 Having described my invention, I claim 1'. In combination, means for folding the edges of a strip of padding material, means for feeding said padding material into contact with a stri of anchoring material and means for folding the folded edges of the padding material so that the padding material completely envelopes the anchoring material.
2. In combination, a machine for forming padding comprising means for coating an anchoring strip with adhesive, meansfor placing the anchoring strip upon a strip of padding material, means for folding each of the longitudinal edges of the padding edges ofa strip of soft material, means for feeding an adhesive reinforcing strip upon said strip of soft material between the edges of the folded portions, and means for folding said folded edges upon said adhesive strip.
4. In a machine of the character as disclosed, folding means for folding over the edges of a strip of soft material, a glue tank,
means for feeding a reinforcing strip throu h said glue tank and upon said strip of soft material between theedges of the folded portions, and means for folding said folded edges upon said reinforcing strip.
5. In a machine of the character as dis-n closed, folding means for folding over the edges of a strip of soft material, means for selvedging the edges of an adhesive strip of reinforcing material, means for feeding said reinforcing strip through said selvedging means and upon said strip of soft material between its folded edges, and means for folding said folded edges upon said adhesive-re" inforcing strip.
6. In a machine as disclosed, folding means for folding over the edges of a strip of soft material, a glue tank, selvedging means in said glue tank, means for feeding a strip of reinforcing material through said selvedging means for selvedging the edges of said strip and for feeding the reinforcing strip through the glue in said tank and upon said stri of soft material, and means for folding t e folded edges of said strip of soft material upon said reinforcing strip..
g 7 'In a machine as disclosed, a pair of rotatable horizontal cones converging towards each other, a pair of rotatable vertical cones, feed rollers for feeding a strip of soft ma terial between said horizontal cones and said vertical cones for folding the edges of said strip of soft material upon itsef, feed and pressure rollers between which said strip of soft material with'its folded edgesare fed from said cones, a secondpair ofhorizo ntal cones, a tubularforming device, and
-a second pair of vertical cones between which second pair of horizontal cones, through which tubular forming device and between which second pair of vertical'cones said strip of soft material is fed by said feed and pressure rollers whereby .the folded edges of said strip of soft material are folded over a reinforcing strip.
8. A machine for making padding, com-' prising means for folding the edges of a strip of padding material,'means for inserting' a strip of reinforcing material coated means for with adhesive between the edges of the folded-over portions of said padding material, means for folding the folded edges of said, padding over said reinforcing strip, and means for pressing theminto contact therewith.
9. In a machine as disclosed, a pair of rotatable horizontal cones converging towards each other, a pair of rotatable vertical cones, feed rollers for feeding a strip of soft material betweenjsaid horizontal cones and said vertical cones for folding the edges of said strip upon itself, feed and pressure rollers between which said strip with its folded edges is fed from said cones, and means for folding said folded edges over a reinforcing stri 15. In combination, means for continuously feeding a strip of padding material, means for folding over the edges of said strip, means for inserting a strip of nonresilient material between the folded edges of said strip of padding material, means for enclosing the strip of non resilient material Y within the padding material and pressure permanently uniting the two strips.
11. In a machine as disclosed, means for folding the edges of a strip of soft material upon itself, a pair of feed and pressure rollers between which said strip of soft material with its edges folded is drawn, a pair of horizontal cones, a tubular forming device, and a pair. of vertical cones between which horizontal cones, through which tubulah forming device and between which vertical cones said strip of soft material is fed by said feed and pressure rollers, whereby the folded edges of said strip of soft material are folded over a reinforcing strip.
12. In a machine as disclosed, means for folding the edges of a strip of soft material upon. itself, a pair of feed and pressure rollers between which said strip of soft material with its edges folded is drawn, and between which a strip of adhesive material is drawn upon said strip of soft material between the folded'edges thereof, a pair of horizontal cones, a tubular forming device, and a pair of vertical cones between which horizontal cones, through which tubular forming device and between which vertical cones said strip,of soft material and said adhesive strip are fed, by said feed and pressure rollers, whereby the folded edges of said strip of soft material are folded upon said strip of adhesive material.
13. A method of forming padding comprising feeding-a stlmipaddingmaterial,
folding over the edges thereof, inserting a strip of non-resilient material between the folded edges, enclosing the strip of non resilient material within the padding material and pern'ianently uniting the two.
14; A method of forming padding comprising folding over the edges of a padding material coating astripof anchoring material with an adhesive, feeding the coated 9 strip between the edges -of the strip of padding material, enclosing the anchoring strip within the padding material, and applying pressure thereto.
15. A method of forming padding, com- 1 prising folding over the edges of an anchoring strip, applying adhesive to the surfaces of the anchoring strip, feeding a strip of padding material into contact with the anchoring strip, enclosing the anchoring strip within the padding material, and ap-' plying pressure to the padding material.
16. A-method of forming padding comprising folding the edges of a strip of padding material, feeding said padding material into contact with a strip of anchoring material, and finally folding the folded edges of the padding material so that the padding material completely envelopes the anchoring material.
17. A method of forming padding comprising coating an anchoring strip with adhesive, placing the same upon a strip of padding material, folding each of the longitudinal edges of the padding material, to a line between the longitudinal margin of the anchoring strip and the folded edge of the padding material, and subsequently folding said folded edges so as to overlap the anchoring strip, and applying pressure thereto.
18. A method of forming padding comprising coating an anchoring strip with adhesive, placing the same upon a strip of padding material, folding the longitudinal edges of the padding material, to a line between the edges of the anchoring strip and padding material, and subsequently folding said folded edges so as to overlap the anchoring strip, and applying pressure to both sides of the composite strip to permanently unite it to both surfaces of the reinforcing strip.
19. In combination, means for folding the edges of a padding material, means for applying a coat of adhesive to a strip of anchoring material, means for feeding the coated strip into contact with the padding material, means for enclosing the strip of anchoring material within the padding ma terial, and means for applying pressure to the padding material.
20. The method of making padding comprising folding the edges of a strip of padding material, inserting a strip of reinforcing material coated with adhesive between the edges of the folded over portions of said padding n'iaterial, folding the folded edges of said padding over said reinforcing strip and pressing them into contact therewith.
21. A machine for making padding comprising means for feeding a strip of soft inaterial, means for applying adhesive to an anchoring strip, means for placing the adhesive coated anchoring strip upon the strip" of soft material so as to extendlongitudinally thereof, means for folding the longitudinal edges of the soft material, so that the distance between the original edges of the soft material will be spaced apart approximately the combined distances that the folded portions extend, and means for'subsequently folding the folded edges so as to overlap and engage the coated anchoring strip.

A machine for making padding comprising means for feeding a strip of soft material, means for feeding a strip of paper, means for reinforcing the edges of said strip of paper, means for placing said strip of paper upon the strip of soft material so as to extend longitudinally thereof, and means for folding the edges of the soft material so as to overlap and enclose the reinforced paperstrip.
23. The method of making padding comprising folding the edges of a strip of padding material, folding the edges of a strip of reinforcing material, coating said reinforcing material with an adhesive, inserting said reinforcing material between the edges of the folded over portions of said padding material, folding the folded edges of said padding material into abutting relation over said reinforcing strip and pressing them into contact therewith.
