Description

Bti

mreosrnss alf-r 'ROBERT if?. Al'iill?, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSGN A MENT TO MOTOR WHEEL CORPRATI TION QF MICHIGAN ON, OF LANSNG, MICHIGAN, .tit CGRPQEA DISK WHEEL.
Application flied Eebruary 3, 193.9. Serial No. 274,7l9.
The primary object o'f the invention is vthe provision, in a disk wheel, of ready access from the 'front of the disk to the'valve stem which ordinarily enierges from the folly at the rear of the disk.
Many expedients have been proposed to effect access from the front of the Wheel by the employment of special valve stems and attachments; but by my invention ll am able to employ the usual straight valve stem having,` its axis approximately in the median plane of the wheel at the rear of the disk adjacent the Wheel periphery and, without materially weakening or marring the sym-l metrical curvature of the disk, enable the valve stem end to be coupled at the front pif the disk with the nipple of an intlation ose.
I accomplish this result by carrying the y general curvature of the disk from in front of the valve stem near the Wheel periphery to the rear of the same in the medial-.Wheel portion, the disk crossing the valve stem axis, Whether 0r not precisely in the median plane of the wheel; and providing an aperture at or adjacent the point of intersection for enabling an air coupling to be effected.. i
LAdvantageously the intersection of the disk and valve stem axis is at some point intermediate the valve stem length, the disk being there apertured to provide a passage- Way permitting the stem to extend through the disk tothe front o ll the Wheel, thus ,avoiding any material weakening or disfiguring of the disk as would result from the provision of a hand hole.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is set forth for illustrative purposes only in the accompanying drawing;` and in the following description based thereon.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a wheel embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 represents such a wheel in diametrie section.
`Referring to the dravvin by reference numerals, the Wheel inclu es a hub portion. l and a 'telly or rim portion 2 carrying a pneumatic tire The main disk portion 4 is shown as riveted or otherwise fixedly secured to the hub at 5 and to the rim at 7, While asecondary disk (i is also shown as riveted or otherwise lixedly secured to the hub at 8 and to the main disk at 9, Adjacent the rim the disk is curved from the front rearwardly across the medien Wheel plane as indicated at 10, forming a forwardly facing recess or concave zone. into this recess the valve stem or casing 11 and the valve cap l2 extend through an open ing' formed in the disk, thereby rendering the cap and valvey stem readily accessible from the front of the wheel for testing and infiation purposes.
What claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
l. A Wheel disk having peripheral corrugations including a zone intersecting the central plane of the tread and the position ot the valve stem and dust-cap atan angle of approximately 90", the said portion be ing apertured to admit said members, -the c orrugations ineludinyjY a concavty adjacent said aperture curved away from the central plane of rotation of the Wheel providing convenient access to the valve.
2. A disk wheel comprising an inner hub substantially straight valve stem the axis ot' which normally coincides substantially with the median plane of the tire, the disk body having' a part extending inwardly from in front ot the valve stem towards the rearand apertured adjacent the inner end ot the valve stem to al'ord access theretol from the Yfront for inlating.
3. A disk Wheel comprising an inner hub portion, an outer tire-carrying portion, a medial body portion, and a 'pneumatic tire pcripherally mounted thereon and having a substantially straight valve stem the axis of which normally coincides substantially with the median plane of thetire, the Fisk body having a part extending inwardly from in front of the valve stem towards the rear across the median plane of the tire and apertured adjacent the point of interception of the valve. stem axis to alford access to the valve stem from the front 'for inating.
Il. A disk wheel comprising an inner hub portion, an outer tire-earry1ng portion, a n'icdial body portion, and a pneumatic tire peripherally mounted thereon and having; a substantially straight valve stem the axis of which normally conicides substantially with the median plane of the tire, the disk body having a part extending inwardly from in 'front of the valve stem towards the rear inwardly from in front of the valve stem towards the rear across the median plane of the tire and apertured at the point of interception of the valve stern axis, the valve stein extending through the aperture to aft'ord access to the valve stem from the trout for inflating.
5. A disk wheel comprising an inner hub portion, an outer tire-carrying portion, a niedial body portion, and a pneumatic tire periphcrally mounted thereon and havingan inwardly extending valve stem the axis of which normally coincides with the median plane of the tire, the disk body having an annular forwardly facing depression, the outer wall of the depression extendingT from in front'y of the valve stein'towards the rear across the median plane of the tire and provided with an aperture in line with the valve2 stem axis through which the valve stemfprojects to the frontJ of the disk to aflordv convenient access thereto for n- Hating;l
