'animation mea muy f2s, i924. "'fsriaine. veggiesf This invention," relates to oiling devices, and more particularly to flange oilers for the Wheels of locomotives.V 1'" .Anobject ofrthezinvention'is to provide means lfor regulating the oil feedof a `iiange 'oiler'.j" n 'Y ""Here-tofore, flanges of." locomotivewheels havefbeen oiled from a vreceptacle by a :gravity feed` andi the feed pipe hasbeen provided with a valve to'regu-latethe flow of oil; The small' quantity ofV oil necessary for this p'ur'- n y pose'y necessitates the usey of'al valveihaving such a small opening that any foreign matter inthe oil.v clogs.y the feed pipe. If a larger quantity of oilisv fed, it not only-frei sults in waste, butalso permits some oilzto settleon the tread ofthe wheel, whichlcauses Slipping' Y n In the present invention, I provide anin-v termittent feed,` whereby thexvalve may be" provided with an 'opening' sui'iciently'y large to lpreventthe"valve orV the feed pipe'vfrom becoming clogged' by dirtl'or foreign""mais-` ter and-atjthe'isame time, pernmit proper .regll ul'ation of the'oilpfeed, f f'gyffl A further objectl of the invention the i provision. ofanattaQhmnt; adapted to be shown one embodiment of the invention. In v arranged in the end Vof the' feedpipeand con- Y tact with the flange of the wheel'to deliver Athe oil thereto. Y y In the accompanying drawings, I lhave this showing v l Figure 'l is a side elevation of a portion of the truck of a. locomotive, showing the invention applied, i v
Figurev 2 is a n lvertical sectional VView through the oil receptacle,
Figure 3 is a section end of the .feed pipe.
Figure 4 is aV sectional View of the intermittent feed mechanism,
Figure 5 isa detail sectional view on line 5-5 of Figurel, and, n
Figure 6 is a rear elevation of the contact member arranged in the feed pipe.
Referring to the drawings, the referencev numeral l designates the ',wheelsfof a loco-y motive adapted to travel on a track V1.` rIhe flange oiler yconsists of ajreceptacle 2, adapt`l ed to vbe supported in vany suitable manneron' the locomotiveV frame, adjacent the l Wheels to be oiled, The receptacle is .providedwith4 al View of the lower 'efeedppeihs 3s adapted@ receive tHe/eef kof'a pipe 4,' connected toanv oilireservoir13v from which' the 'oil' is fed byfgravity to vfthe receptacle QI The bottoni ofV the receptacle is provided With-anoutlet opening edftofre'ceive apipe ,7,1551y means-for which theoiIf-is conveyed to the wheels. ' The upper endijof the shaft'l is'provided with' av ratchet Vwheel, ,2.5. As shown, this .wheel 4is provided 'Withv upper and lowerflanges' 26. A skeleton member 27,V in the form of a rectanglefis arranged between the guides 26 andthe yoppositesides offthis mem fber are provided"Withratchet teeth 28, ex-
tending Yin opposite directions. One end of V'the-member 27is provided with an arm29, whichv is connected to a lever 30, as at 3l.
The lever is pivotally mounted on a suitable y partof the locomotive andthe opposite endy thereof is provided with aneye, adaptedv to y, Y
receive the locomotive valve rod 33. As shown, collars 34 are arranged on opposite sides ofthe lever 30.
In operation, the normal movement of the openings. 19 tol be brought into alinement withthe opening 23. As the opening 19 comes into alinement with the opening'23, a quantity of oil suflioient to fill theopening 19 is delivered from the receptacle and this quantity of oil is carried around inthe open- Ving 19 until it comes in alinement with the outlet openingv.V The'oil is then delivered through the pipes 7 and 8 and feeds down the rods 10 to the flange 12 of the wheel. The rods 10 are free to move in the Y-shaped connections 9, which `permitsthem to remain in contact with the flange of the wheel at all times and the flattened face 11 facilitates the delivery of oil to the flange. A
It will be apparent that the quantity of i oil delivered can be regulated byr changing the size of the opening19in vthe lower disk or by increasing or decreasing the number of such openings.
It is to be understod thatthe form of my invention'herewithshown and described is to be taken as a prefererd example of the same, andthat various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement vof parts may be resorted to without departing from'the spirit of the invent-ion `or the scope of the subjoined claims. e i
I claim:
ranged horizontallybetween a pair of adjacent locomotive wheels and havingits ends arranged in proximity to said wh'eels to'deliver lubricant thereto, and means for supplying lubricant to vsaid pipe, said means being arranged above` and intermediate the ends of said pipe and including a shaft, and Yconnections betweenv said shaft and a moving part of the locomotive for intermittently supplying lubricant to saidY pipe. 'A
. 2. A flange oiler vcomprising a pipe arranged betweena pair of adjacent locomotive wheels and having itsends arranged in proximity to said wheels to deliver 'lubrie cant thereto, and means forV supplying lubricant to said pipe, said meansbeing arranged above ,and adjacent said pipe-and 1 A flange oiler comprising a ypipe ar-k including a vertical rotatable shaft, a liori- Y Y Zontalratchet wheelcarried by said shaft, a pair of oppositelyarranged rows of ratchet teeth disposed adjacent said ratchet wheel, and connections between saidrows ofv teeth and a moving'partofthe locomotive for actuating said rows of teeth; 'j Y 3. A device constructed in accordance with claim 2 provided with a frame to which said rows of teeth are connected,.thecon nections between said rows of teeth and the moving part ofthe vehicle being adapted to reciprocate said rows of teeth ina line coinn Vcident with theV planeeof said ratchet wheel,
said rows of teeth beingarranged parallel'to each other in lines at Van angle tothe kline of reciprocation of said teeth, j f
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
