B the head-block or bolster, to which, respectively, the lower and upper sections Got the fifth-wheel are secured in. the customary approved manner. The under side of the headblock B is provided with a strengthening bottom plate, D, which has downward-extending guard-plates D, arranged symmetrically near both ends of'the head-block, in such a manner that the fifth-wheel slides between two guards The guards swing with the head-block along the lower fifth-wheel section, and take the frequent repairing of the same dispensed with to a considerable degree.
The guard-plates may also be applied to the axle, acting with equal efficacy "as when attached to the bolster.
