IMPROVEMENT IN FlFTH-WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,117, dated January 26, 1875; application filed .4 I November 7, 1874- i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PUTMAN, of Fonda, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fifth-Wheel, of which thefollowing is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of my improved fit'th-wheel, and Fig. 2 a side View of the same.
Similar letters. of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the axle, and
B the head-block or bolster, to which, respectively, the lower and upper sections Got the fifth-wheel are secured in. the customary approved manner. The under side of the headblock B is provided with a strengthening bottom plate, D, which has downward-extending guard-plates D, arranged symmetrically near both ends of'the head-block, in such a manner that the fifth-wheel slides between two guards The guards swing with the head-block along the lower fifth-wheel section, and take the frequent repairing of the same dispensed with to a considerable degree.
The guard-plates may also be applied to the axle, acting with equal efficacy "as when attached to the bolster.
Having thus described my inveution,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent e In fifth-wheels, the head-block or axle, pr'ovided with guard-plates D at both sides and opposite points of the fifth-wheel, for protecting king-bolt and wheel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
