vThis invention relates to winding machinesin which the yarn or threadmay be wound into either conical or cylindrical packages as desired, said machine being commonly known as a cone and tube winder. In thistype of machine it has heretofore been common to provide the cam which controls the reciprocating ,motion of the two traverse guides for the yarn or thread on opposite sides of the machine with three cam grooves, the two outer cam grooves being used when winding the conical packages or cones and the middle cam groove belng used when winding cylindrical packages or tubes; it being understood that the cam grooves for cone winding are shaped differently from the cam groovefor tube winding. An example of this type of machine is illustrated in United States Letters Patent No. 1,353,475, dated September 21st, 1920. It also necessitates the spacing of the winding units sufliciently far apart to accommodate the wide cams necessary to provide the three .cam grooves therein;

In the present instance I have shown the winding machine in Fig. 1 as provided with cone holders 34 and the parts arranged for cone winding. Of course when it is desired to wind tubes, suitable tube holders will be employed.
What I claim is 1. In a winding machine, a traverse guide for the thread or yarn, a guide actuating cam, and means for rotating it in either direction, said cam having only two circumferential cam faces arranged to control the winding of conical or cylindrical packages as the cam is rotated in one or the other direction. chme is winding cones or tubes these shafts 2.
