CONDENSER AND HOLDER THEREFOB.

My invention relates to a condenser and a holder' therefor, and more particularly such as may be employed in connection with interrupter or vtimer mechanism of ignition. apparatus for an internal combustion engine.
My invention resides in a condenser unit or structure comprising a spring or equivalent means attached thereto and forming part thereof for resiliently confining or cushioning the unit upon or within holding means, particularly when the holding means comprises a plurality of members between which the condenser unit is disposed.
My invention resides in a condenser unit of the character referred to wherein the spring is secured or attached at its one end to a metallic member and is bowed for engagement with a holding member and has its free end slidable upon a metallic or weartaking member, preferably the same member to which it is attached.
My invention resides further in interrupter or timer structure with which is associated a condenser unit of the character referred to and holding means therefor.
My invention resides in the structure and features of combination hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, 1n which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of interrupter or timer mechanism embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on enlarged scale, partly in elevation, of parts of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the condenser unit.
Referring to Fig. 1, a support or base 1, generally of metal or conducting material, has associated therewith the rotary cam 2 driven by and in definite relation with respect to the internal combustion engine. The cam actuates or controls the arm 3, flexibly supported by spring 4, and carr 7ing the movable interrupter contact 5 w ich through the parts named is in electrical communication with the base 1, which generaly is grounded. Co-operating with the movable contact 5 is the stationary interrupter or timer contact 6 carried by the bar 7 secured by screw 8 to the holder member or cover plate 9, generally of metal or conducting material. The member 9 is secured by screws 10 and 1()a to the base 1, the screws being suitably insulated from member 9 by insulating bushings and washers, as well understood in the art.
Between the cover or plate 9 and the base 1 is confined or held the condenser unit C shunting the interrupter, as well understood 1n the art.
The condenser C may be of any suitable form or structure. In the example illustrated it is a rolled condenser comprising ribbons of tin foil or the like, constituting the condenser plates, armatures or coatings, separated by paper or other thin flexible dielectric material wound or rolled into a unit having suitable capacity and provided with terminals 12 and 13 of sheet metal, as copper or the like, having the perforations 14 and 15, respectively. The terminal 12 is soldered or otherwise suitably connected to the strip 16 which to the left of the .terminal 12, as at 17, is bent inwardly and. ex'- tends into the condenser unit in electrical. contact with one armature of the condenser. The strip 16 extends also to the right of the terminal l2, passing through the notch 18 in the insulating cover or strip 19 and lying between the strip 19 and an outer insulating covering of the condenser unit.` A resilient member or bowed leaf spring 20, of phosphor bronze or equivalent, is soldered or otherwise secured at its one end, for example its left end 21, to the strip 16. Opposite the other end of the spring 20 the insulating strip 19 has an aperture 22 allowing the free end 23 of the spring '20 to engage and slide upon the strip 16.
The terminal 13 is connected to a strip 24:, in general similar to the strip 16 and is mounted on the condenser unit substantially the same as is said last-mentioned strip.

A condenser unit, comprising in part the attached spring 20, is placed in the position indicated between plate or cover 9 and the base l, the latter preferably being provided with a recess or seat 25 for reception ot the spring 20.

Accordingly, the terminal 13 connects with the plate or cover 9 vand through the bar 7 with the stationary interruptor contact 6.
The strip 16 to which the spring 2O is attached, in the example described, connects with that armature ot the condenser which connects with the base l, and therefore en' in the case where the members 9 and l, orV
either ot them, are or is composed ot insulating material, my invention is nevertheless present when the spring 20 or the like is with one or more features oi its structure comprised .in the condenser unit.
By the structure described the condenser unit C is resiliently held in position by spring 20, for withstanding jars and shoclrs incident to motor vehicles upon which my structure is utilizable. lWhen tiered the end of spring 2() slides upon a weanresisting` member, such as a metallic element 1G, the latter shielding the condenser proper 'from wear by the spring, which eventually might penetrate to an armature of the condenser, particularly the armature connected to the terminal 13, with resultant periodic or permanent short circuit oit the condenser and consequent erratic behavior or inoperative ness of the ignition system.
What l claim is:

3. A. condenser unit comprising a conu denser, ot a member bound thereto between insulating sheets, one of said sheets having an opening, and a cushioning spring for the condenser attached to said member at said opening.

8. The combination with a condenser, of means forming a unit therewith comprising a metallic member connected Vto an armature of the condenser, and cushioning spring attached at its one end to said member and slidably bearing with its Ytree end upon said member.

11. The combination with a holder comprising spaced holder members insulated f-rom each other, of an elongated rolled condenser lying between said holder members, metal loops lying upon opposite sides of said rolled condenser, each contacting with an armature thereof, a perforated terminal secured within each of said loops, said terminals extending laterally from the roll to points beyond the side thereof, and means passing respectively through the perforations of said terminals for securing` said holder members together and for electrically connecting said terminals respectively with said holder members.
12. The. combination with a rolled condenser, of metal strips bound thereto upon opposite sides of the roll and each extending around an edge of the roll into position between leaves of the roll in contact with an armature, a terminal secured to each of said strips on the outside of the roll and extending at right angles to the axis thereof, and a cushioning spring attached to one of said strips.
13. The combination with a condenser unit, of a spring attached thereto, and a holder comprising a conducting member and a second member spaced therefrom, said condenser engaging one of said holder members, said spring enga-ging another of said holder members in a recess therein, and a connection from an armature of said condenser to said conducting holder member.
14. The combination with a condenser, of a spring attached thereto, and a. holder comprising conducting members spaced and insulated from each other, said unit disposed between said members in engagement with one of them, said spring engaging another of said holder members, and connections from the armatures of said condenser to said holder members.
15. The combination with a condenser, of a holder therefor comprising members between which said condenser is disposed, a cushioning spring attached at its one end to the condenser and slidably bearing thereon at its other end, said cushioning spring engaging one of said holder members.
16. The combination with a condenser, of a holder therefor comprising members between which said condenser is disposed, a cushioning spring attached at its one end to the condenser and slidably bearing thereon at its other end, said cushioning spring engaging one of said holder members in a recess therein.
17. The combination with a condenser, of a cushioning spring attached thereto and connected to an armature thereof, and a holder comprising conducting members spaced and insulated from each other, said unit disposed between said members in engagement with one of them, and said spring engaging another' of saidy holder members and-making electrical contact therewith.
18. The combination with a holder comprising holder members insulated from each other, of an elongated condenser comprising foil armatures and dielectric material rolled into a unit lying between said hol-der members, conducting strips contacting within the roll at each end thereof extending around the ends thereof in opposite directions and lying substantially parallel with the major axis of the roll and forming loops, and a separate terminal member permanently connected electrically and mechanically to each of said loops and project-ing transversely of said unit.
19. The combination with a holder comprising holder' members insulated from each other, of a rolled condenser lying between said holder members, conducting strips forming loops lying along the opposite outside faces of the condenser roll, each contacting with an armature thereof, a perforated terminal secured within each of said loops, said terminals extending laterally from the roll in the same direction to points beyond the side thereof, the end portion of one of said terminals being displaced and lying in a plane substantially parallel with but not included in the planes of said opposite outl side faces of the roll, and means passing respectively through the perforations of said terminals for securing said holder members together and for electrically connecting said terminals respectively with said holder members.
20. The combination with a condenser comprising foil armatures and dielectric material rolled into a unit, of conducting strips contacting with the armatures within the roll extending around the ends of the roll and along the opposite outside faces of the roll, terminals secured to said strips at the portions thereof lying upon the said opposite faces of the roll and extending laterally beyond the roll on the same side thereof, and insulating material co-acting with the free ends of said strips for holding the latter in engagement with the roll, said terminals having apertures for accommodating means for holding said terminals in engagement with different conducting bodies.
21.
