TRAFFIC SIGNAL FOB, AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed January 2, 1925.
This invention pertains to traflic signals for automobiles, and the object is to provide a practical and efiicient form of such signal to attach to the headlights of the machine, and embodying right and left turn signals shown on the headlights.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of a headlight, the signaling curtain being drawn down into operative position;
Figure 2 is a section thru the headlight rim showing the curtain in a lowered position;
Figure 3 is a cross section of a headlight, the curtain being in a raised position;
Figure 4- is a diagrammatic layout of the operating cable and connections.
In combination with the headlights of an automobile, the invention comprises frames 1 which are securable in any conventional manner to the headlights 2. Spring rollers 3 are mounted in the upper parts of these frames, and curtains el of some suitable transparent or translucent material are attached by their upper ends to these rollers, the lower ends of the curtains being supported by ribs 5 which slide in guides 10 formed in the frame 1 as shown in Figure. 3. The curtains l have the words Right and Left suitably lettered thereon, as shown in Figures 1 and the word Right being lettered on the right hand curtain, and the word Left on the left hand curtain. Small cables 6 are attached by their ends to the ribs 5 and are extended down thru the frames 1 and thru conduits 7 back through the dash 9. and there attached to rin 's 8 convenient to the hand of the operator. To indicate a right hand turn, the driver pulls the right hand cable, which draws down the curtain at the right hand side, thus shmvine the word Right over that head- Serial No. 87.
light. Similarly with the left hand cable and curtain to indicate the left turn.
In order to prevent the light rays from the lower reflecting surfaces of the headlights blinding the approaching driver, th se surfaces may be finished in a dull finifa.
While I have herein described a certain specific mann r and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that Imay vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In combination with an automobile and a head lamp thereof, an open frame adapted to detachably fit upon the front of the lamp; the said frame having a straight horizontally disposed upper compartment and straight lateral guide ways connecting therewith, the lower half of the frame being semi-circular; a spring shade roller mounted in the said, upper compartment; a translucent shade having directional lettering thereupon, mounted upon said shade roller, the lateral edges of the shade being disposed in said guideways and the lower edge of the shade being provided with a straight stiffening rib adapted to prevent the downward movement of the shade across the lower semi-circular part of the frame opening; a conduit connected with the lower part of the frame, thence extended dmvnward and then back through the dash of the automobile; and a cable attached. by one end to the said stiffening; rib at the lower edge of the shade and extender back through the said conduit.
In testimony whereof I aiiia my signature.
