lily invention relates to button fastenings, and particularly to that type wherein the use of thread is entirely eliminated in the application of a button to a desired fabric.
It is the purpose of my present invention to provide a button fastening of the type indicated which is adapted to be applied to a desired fabric without penetration or mutilation thereof; which is readily adapted for application either through the medium of a manually operablet-ool or by suitable power operated machinery; which will permit universal motion of any associated button with respect to the fastening and the carrying fabric of a. garment, and thereby relieve the latter of considerable strain incident to but- ,toning and unbuttoning of such garment; which is simple in construction, eflicient in use, and which can be manufactured at small cost.
I will describe my invention in the best form known to me at present, but it will be apparent that the same is susceptible to changes in forms and proportions and to desirable additions with the exercise of only ordinary mechanical skill and without departing from the scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.

V i In the drawings, my improved fastening is shown as comprising an outer clamping plate A, an inner clamping plate B, and a dished button carrying disk (3. The inner clamping plate B is also circular and preferablyof the same diameter as plat-c This plate B has a tubular contral head 12 provided at its outer end with an internal strengthening head 13, said head being of a diameter to permit its engagement wlthin the head 10. To assemble the plate B with the previously assembled plate A and disk C so as to confine a desired fabric between said plates I employ a plier tool, one desirable form of which is shown in Figure 9. Such tool comprises jaws 14 and 15, the former of which has it free end recessed as at 16, while the latter carries on 1ts inner face a stud 18 positioned to enter recess 16 when the jaws are contracted. Adacent to recess 16 the outer face of jaw 1 is chambered as as 17 to correspond tothe curvature of the disk C so that said jaw may be engaged between said disk and plate A. In effecting assembly of the plate B with the plate A as shown in Figures 4 and 5, the jaw 14 of the plier tool is positioned between the disk C and plate with the head 10 engaged in the recess 16. Plate B then is placed over the inner face of plier jaw 15 with the stud18 projecting into the tubular central head 12. With this status existing the fabric, indicated at l), is suitably positioned between the plates A and B. The jaws 14 and 15 then are contracted with the result that during the first portion of such contraction the fabric D will be forced into the head 10 in advance of the interlock the plates A and B with the fabric D clamped therebetween, theportion of the fabric between the plates being continuous and unmutilated as will be obvious.
A button of the type adapted forassociation with the disk C is indicated at E, and is shown provided on its inner face with a groove 19, into which the outer edge 01" the disk C is inserted, while the disk is compressed so that when the disk'thereattcr is permitted to expand the button will be firmly united therewith as is manifest.
In Figures 6 7' and 8,1: have shown a modified "form of inner clampingplate which is distinguished from the inner clamping plate previously described, in that the head 12 is provided with an external head 20. By this construction the possibility otthe head being crushed by the stud 18 during assembly and application is eliminated. It will be observed in connection; with this modified form'olf inner clampingplatc that at the point where the external head 20 is provided, the internal diameter of the head is reduced so that said head: will lie substantially flush with the outer surface of the remainder of the head. By this arrange ment the same amount of expansion of the head 12 to effect assembly is required in the modified form as in the form previously described. i
lVhat I claim, is
1. A button fastening comprising a button carrying disk having an aperture, a clamping plate having a hollow head extending through said aperture and expanded at its free end,and a second clamping plate hav ing a hollow head nested and expanded in the head oi the first plate to interlock said plates with fabric clamped therebetween, the head of the second plate being open at its base end whereby said head may be expanded within the head of the first plate by an expanding tool inserted therein at the base end thereof.
A button fastening comprising a button carryingdisk having an aperture, a clamping plateohavinga hollow head extending through said aperture and expanded at its free end, and a second clamping plate having a hollow head open atits base end and nested and expanded in the head of the first plate-to interlock said plates with fabric clamped therebetween, the head ot said second plate before connection with the first plate being of less internal diameter at its free end, than at its base end whereby said head may be expanded within the head of the first plate by an expanding tool inserted therein at the base end thereof.
