UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN F. HULBER'I, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO MASTER PACKAGE CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
REENFORCED CONTAINER.
Application filed January 22, 1923.
The invention relates to containers and more particularly to a reenforced fibre or paper container.
The object of the invention is to provide a container which may be easily produced and which has its head reenforced and secured in osition by a metal band or strip which e actually grips the head on both sides and also engages the side wall or walls of the container.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and all equivalents.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a container with flat head embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the container partly assembled; Fig. 3 is'a detail view, artly in section, of a container with dished ead embod 'ng the invention; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing it partly assembled; Fig. 5 is a detail view, partly in seotion, of another container with dished head embodying the invention; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing this form of container partly assembled.
The subject-matter of the invention relates to the means employed for connecting the head to the side of the cover or body of the box and as such means may be identical for either the cover or the body of the box, the box or container alone has been shown in detail for the purpose of explaining the invention.
The sides 3 of the box, as well as the sides of the cover, are com osed of fibre, either tubing or other suita 1e shape, such fibre tubing being usually made up of a number of wraps of aper or fibre sheets.
A metal s eathing, as a band 4, preferably of thin sheet steel or other suitable sheet metal and of U-shape or channel section, is desi ed to be slipped over one end of the box siding or cover siding.
In Figs. 1 and 2 a flat head 5 of the box or the cover is of laminated fibre, wood or other suitable material, and in the case of a tubular container is of cylindrical form and is fitted within the inner ring portion of the band 4. As shown in Fig. 2, the head is positioned int-he box at a distance from the outer edge and while held in this position suitable tools operate upon the outer Serial No. 814,061.
edge of the box and the inner edge of the band 4 so that the inner edge is rolled or crimped up into a bead 6 and the outer edge of the box, together with that ortion of the band'or strip 4 sheathing said edge, is rolled or crimped over into a bead 7. This crimping operation also draws the outer ortion of the stri or band 4 tightl against the outer side o the box or cover ody and the result of this arrangement is a container whose ends are reenforced by the metal band and whose headsare reeforced and tightly held between the rolled metal beads of the band or strip.
In Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, the head 8 is of paper or fibre and may consist of several laminations, as shown, with one or more of these laminations bent at an angle adjacent its edge to form a dished or flanged head, and in the case of a tubular container is in cylindrical form and is fitted within the tubular siding 3. As shown in Fig. 4, the head 8 is positioned within the tubing 3 and sheathing 4 at a distance from the outer edge thereof, and with its flange 9 projecting inwardly, and while the parts are in this position suitable tools operate upon the sheathed outer edge of the box and other tools on the inner edge of the band 4 and the flange 9 so, that these arts are rolled over or crimped up into bea s 10 and 11, respectively, as shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 6, the head 8 is positioned within the tubing 3 and sheathing 4 ata distance from the outer edge thereof and with its flange 9 projecting outwardly, and while the parts are in this position suitable tools 0 erate u on the sheathed outer edge of the ox and t e flange 9 and other tools upon the inner edge of the band 4 so that these parts are rolled or crimped up into beads 12 and .9 In either of the dished head forms it willv V,
13, respectively, as shown in Fig. 3.
be noted that in addition to the advantages of construction of the plain head previouslydescribed, a further advantage is had by the direct clamping engagement between the flanged part of the head and the-sheathing, preventing any chance for the head being sprung or released from the siding.
I have used the term band in this specification to include broadly a ring or strip, the ring form being used on cylindrical con tainers while the strip form'may be used on containers having polygonal shaped bodies or sides.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. In a container, the combination with a head,'of sidin within which the head fits, and a' metal 5 eathin fittin over an end of the siding and receivin t e head within it and having its inner e ge rolled over to form a supporting beadengaging the head and having that portion extending over the end of the siding rolled therewith into 'clam iing engagement with said head.
2. n a container, the combination of a flanged head, sidiwithin which the head fi andafnietal scathing fitting over an en of the siding and receiving the head within it, the portion of said sheathing adjacent the. inner side of said siding having a art crim ed with the siding against one side of the ead and another part crimped against the other side of the head, the flange of said head being also crimped with one of the crim (1 parts of said sheathing against the head v 3. In a container, the combination of a head having a bendable flange, siding within which the head fits, and a metal sheathing fittingx over an end of the siding and receiving t e head within it, the portion of said band adjacent the inner side of said siding having a part crimped with the siding against one side of the head and another part crimped with said flange against the other side of the head.
4. In -a container, the combination with the fibre siding, of a head having afianged portion, a metal band fitting within said sidmg and about the head and having a part bent with said flanged portion against the head and another part bent with the siding ilntoda rounded edge which projects over the 5. In a container, the combination with the fibre sidingand a dished head having a flange, of a metalband crim ed with said flange against the inner side 0 the head and with said siding against the outer side of the head.
