This invention relates to a smolrers article in the form of a covered ash-receiver. The cover is removable, and provided with a match-safe pendent within the ash-receiver, and also has means to hold ignition slips.

The cover may be made in two portions,

comprising an annular or other open frame to fit within the top of the ash-receiver, said frame having a projecting flange to rest upon the brim of the ash-receiver, and also comprising a lid portion which forms the major portion of the cover, and is connected by a hinge to the open frame at or near the top of the match-safe; the ignition slips being locked against displacement when the lid is down. The lid is preferably provided with two pockets for ignition slips, and with an intermediate opening through which ashes and burned matches may e dropped into the ash-receiver.

The match-safe is divided into two compartments by means of a partition, and the latter is extended upwardly above the match-safe to form a support for a cigar rest. Preferably the cigar rest is depressible, and means extends therefrom to the lid to swing the same up when the cigar rest is depressed, whereby the lid may be raised sufficiently to permit it to be cai'ight by the finger, whereby it may be lifted to a vertical position. In the preferred form of the connection the depression of the cigar rest raises the lid about to vertical position.

Figure 9 shows the preferred form of the depressible cigar rest seen at Figure 8. In Figure 9 the cigar rest is connected to lift the lid about to a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines.

An'aslrreceiver, in the form of a vase or box 10, has a lid or cover 11, and a matchsafe 12 depends from said cover into the ash-receiver; the cover having a pocket or provision 13 for holding a match-striking slip 14-.

A rim or top frame 15, of annular or other suitable contour, may overhang and rest upon the brim 16 of the ash-receiver 10, which may be an ornamental vase of metal, glass, ceramic ware, wood, etc; and from this rim 15 depends the match-safe 12, which may extend downwardly towards the bottom of the ashreceiver at the back thereof.

A segmental lid 17 is fitted within the annular top frame 15, and .is hinged at 18 to the top of the straight front wall'19 of the match-bomso that when said lid is lifted the ash-receptacle may be dumped. Moreover the interior of the ash-receptacle is rendered accessible without lifting off the annular frame 15. In this lid is formed an opening 20 through which may bedropped burned matches and refuse, said opening preferably extending across the lid close to the match-safe,'and the forward edge 21 of said opening serving as a finger hold for raising'the lid. The edges may be convexly rounded as shown, for appearance and for convenience of manipulation, the opening being wide enough to admit the finger for raising the lid. A

By raising the lid, the slips are rendered accessible for with drawal and replacement. v There is also provided upon the annular frame 15 a platform or support 23, in such position: that a burning cigar or cigarette placed thereon may be pinched between the support and the lid 17 as the latter descends, thereby extinguishing the cigar. This support 23 affords a convenience upon which to knock a pipe, orby which to linoch on the ashes from a cigar. i I v i The match-safe is divided by a removable vertical partition 24 into two compartments, to keep the matches in upright position. This partition may be removable, and may slide up and down in front and rear grooves between vertical raised beads 25' formed in the front and rear walls of .the match-safe by bending the metalthe'reof,

From said partition 24- may rise an extension 26, upon which may be fiXed a cigar rest- 27 thus making a compact, attractive and saleable combined ash-receiver, matchsafe, match-striker, cigar-extinguisher and cigar rest. The cigar rest may extend forward horizontally, andniay' overhang the hinge portion of the swinging lid 17; and the opening 20 in the top of the latter may be of ample dimensions, so that, when the lid is swung up, the narrowed end of the cigar rest may occupy said opening. This permits ample swing of the lid..

Referring now to Figures 7 and 8, the hinged lid 28 is also provided with two ignition- slip pockets 29, 30, flanking a 'cen tral openings 31 in the lid, this opening also being provided with broad convesly-curved edges 32, for convenience in dropping debris therethrough, and for knotlring a cigar end against it to shake 05 the ashes. The slips 14 in both pockets areloeked by the brim portionof the open frame 22 against end-' wise displacement when the lid is down. The support 33 on the open frame beneath the lid is inclined downwardly and forwardly to co-operate with an inclined projection 34 under the lid, for extinguishing a cigar. This support is convenient to' knock a pipe against, and for other purposes, as the ashes readily fall off therefrom into the receiver.

The projection 3e underthe lid be in the form of a tongue which is bent down wardly to an inclined position, the sides of the projection being folded upwardly at 35 to form supports connecting the inclined projection 34 to the lid. When tiie inclined projection becomes heated, the heat will not readily spread to the top of the lid.

The cigar rest 36 is depressible, being mounted upon an arm 37 which is pivoted at 38ito the upper end of the partition 39 in the match-box. An arm 40 extends forwardly from the pivot, said arm l0 being raised when the cigar rest is depressed, and pressing up against theunder side of the lid to tilt the same up about its pivot far enough so that it may be readily caught by the tinger and raised to a vertical position. The cigar rest 36 thus serves the function of a finger-piece for raising the lid. The parts 37%40 may consist of two plates bcstriding the top of the partition 39, and fitted closely tothe same, so as to hold'the cigar rest against lateral displacement. These two' plates may be formed integral with the cigar rest, and may be folded down from the edges of the cigar rest and close to the under side of the same, as at 41; the parts 364O being preferably a single piece of metal. 3

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim 1. The combination with an ash-receiver,

safe and conforming with said frame, said I l id provided with a pocket for a matchstriking slip, and also having an opening through which to drop burned matches;

2. The combination with'a'n ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, and a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe andconforming with said frame, said lid provided with a pocket for match-striking slip and also having an opening through which to drop burned matches, said opening serving as a finger-hold for raising the lid, and the edges of the opening being conveiily rounded, the opening being wide enough to admit the finger for raising the lid. The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ashaeceiver, and lid hinged to the upper part of the matchsafe and conforming with said frame, saidpocket being of proportions to fittheignition sides obtained from an ordinary safetyniatch box, and the open removable frame llO serving to lock the slips in the pocket when the lid is down, said pocket being on the underside of the lid.

4. The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, and a lid hinged to the upper part of thematchsafe and conforming with said frame, said lid provided with a pocket fora matchstriking slip, and also having an opening through which to drop burned matches, a support being provided upon said open frame to co-operate with the lid to pinch and extinguish a cigar.

The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, a vertical partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with an upward extension, and a cigar rest mounted upon said upwardextension above the matches.

The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ashreceiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ashreceiver, a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, and depressible means mounted upon said frame for lifting said lid.

The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, a vertical partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with an upward extension, a cigar rest mounted upon said upward extension above the matches, said cigar rest being mounted for movement, and means to enable it when depressed to raise said lid about to vertical position. 7

The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ashreceiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, a. lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, a vertical partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with an upward extension, and a cigar rest mounted upon said upward extension above the matches, said cigar rest having an arm which is pivoted to the partition in said match-safe, and having means to lift said lid.

9. The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ashreceiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, a lid hinged upon to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, a vertical partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with. an upward extension, a cigar rest mounted upon said upward extension above the matches, said cigar rest being mounted for movement, and means to enable it when depressedto raise said lid, the lid being liftable inde pendentlyof said cigar rest.

10. The combination of an ash-receptacle provided with a lid, a cigar rest supported upon said receptacle, and a connection from the cigar rest to the lid to enable depression of the cigar rest to raise the lid.

11. The combination of an ash-receptacle provided with lid, a cigar rest supported upon said receptacle, and a connection from the cigar rest to the lid to enable depression of the cigar rest to raise the lid, the lid being also liftable independently of the cigar rest.

12. The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with an upward extension, and a cigar rest mounted upon said upward extension above the matches, said cigar rest having an arm which is pivoted to the partition in said match-safe, and having means to lift said lid, said arm consisting of two plates bestriding the partition to hold the cigar rest against lateral displacement.

13. The combination with an ash-receiver, of an open removable top frame for said ashreceiver, a 1natcl1safc depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with'said frame, a vertical partition dividing the match-safe into compartments, and said partition provided with an upward extension, and a cigar rest mounted said upward extension above the matches, said lid provided with two pockets for ignition slips, and with an opening between said poclrets in such position that slips placed in the pockets are locked against di placement when the lid is down.

14. The combination with an ash-receiver,

of an open removable top frame for said ash-receiver, a match-safe depending from said frame within the ash-receiver, and. a lid hinged to the upper part of the match-safe and conforming with said frame, said lid provided with a pocket for a match-strilring slip, and also having an opening through which to drop burned matches, a support being provided upon said open frame to cooperate with the lid to pinch and extinguish a ci ar, said support being inclined down warcly, and said lid having a downwardly iii provided with a pocket "for a match-striking slip, and also having an opening through which to drop burned matches, a support being provided upon said open frame to coopei'ate with the lid to pinch and extinguish a cigar, said support beinginclined downwaisdly5 and said lid having a downwardlyinolined projection to co-operate therewith to extinguish a cigar, thepi'ojection being upon the under side of the lid, and in the form of a tongue bent downwardly there under;
