. iSHEARSSI-IARPENER.
This invention relates to shears or scissors sharpeners, and more particularly to a portable power-driven shears or scissors sharpener, which is adapted especially for in dividual barbers use to be operated or driven by means of an electric motor with flexible shaft.
An object of this invention is the provision of a portable shears or scissors sharpener which may be held in one hand while the shears or scissors to be sharpened is held in the other hand.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a shears or scissors sharpener which may be quickly attached to any motor with flxible shaft.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a shears or scissors sharpener which will provide the barber at any or all times with means for putting his scissors into good working condition.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a portable shears or scissors sharpener which is adapted to be connected to a flexible shaft. 7
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved sharpener connected to a flexible shaft adapted to be connected to an electric motor, parts of the sharpener and. shaft being broken away, the view showing the application of a scissors to the grinding wheel of the sharpener.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the sharpener shown in Fig. 1, the view being taken in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 1 is a view of the shaft 8 to one end of which the grinding wheel is attached and to the other end of which the flexible motordriven shaft is connected.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 5 indicates the frame of the. sharpener which is provided with a handle 6 at the end of which is formed an aperture 7 forthe purpose of hanging up the sharpener. The frame 5 is provided with a shaft 8, which extends beyond an inset surface 9 of the Application filed March 12, 1924. serial No. 700,o70.
body of the sharpener. A shoulder 10 is formed on the shaft 8, on which a grinding wheel 11 is mounted and is held thereon by a nut 12. The other end of the shaft 8 terminates in a recess 14 formed in the frame 5 and is threaded. A washer 15 is placed over this end of the shaft 8 and a nut 16 is screwed thereon. T heshaft 8 is connected to a flexible shaft 17 which passes through an aperture in the frame 5 in alignment with the shaft 8.
The flexible shaft housing 17 is provided with a peripheral groove 18 which is engaged by a ball 19 projecting from, but held within, an aperture 20. The ball 19 is held against the flexible shaft housing 17 by a coiled compression spring 21 which presses against a threaded plug 22 which stops up the aperture 20. The flexible shaft housing 17 comprises a rotating spring 24 which is secured to a rigid member 25, the latter comprising an enlarged portion 26 which is held against longitudinal movement in the shaft 17 by being positioned between the inner projection 18 and an inwardly extending flange 27. The member 25 has formed thereon a feather 28. The end portion of the member 25 and the feather 28 project into a recess formed longitudinally in the end of the shaft 8 and serve to rotat the latter.
The frame 5 comprises a portion 30 which has a slot 31. A work-holder 32 is adjust ably secured to the portion 30 on one side thereof by a bolt 33 passing through the work-holder 32 and passing through the aperture 31, and a wing nut 35 which engages the bolt 33. The work-holder 32 is adjacent the grinding wheel 11 and may be adjusted so that blades 36 of a scissors 37 may be placed one at a time on the workholder 32 and have their edges in contact with the periphery of the grinding wheel 11.
While I have herein described one form of my invention, modifications thereof may be devised without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come within the scope of this invention.
What I claim is:
1. A shear sharpener, comprising in combination a frame having a handle at one side with the base of the'handle extending outwardly leaving an inset surface, an extension portion opposite and below the handle having a slot therein, said extension having inset surfaces and alined faces, a grinder shaft exitendingfsih izengh the frame, a grindtween as lng an'd;the bodygo'fthe-lsframe, an 10 ing Wheel onthe end'of the shaftedj acent" apertnrethrongh the lng-adaptedto engage a the inset surface,- a Work holder comprisingfiexibleshaft and means whereby a driving an arm having a boltextendinglthronghitheirmember mmy be con'nected across the recess 5 slot in the extension and means to operate from a flexible shaft to the grinder shaft.
