This invention relates to fastenings for hand bags and the like and has for its 'object to provide such devices which are simple in construction and yet which give great security in use and prevent the accidental opening of the bag or the like.

In general a fastening constructed according to the invention comprises a member carried by one part of the or frame which member is adapted to engage another member on the other part or frame when in the closed position, the first mentioned member being connected to the carrying handle or the like in such a manner that when the bag or the like is carried by the handle or the like the member is maintained in the engaged position by the weight of the bag which acts in the contrary direction to that in which it is necessary to move the member to disengage it. 7

Two such fastening members are preferably employed on a hand bag or the like one end of the usual form of handle being connected to each and in this manner the bag is additionally secured. Each engaging member connected to the handle is preferably spring controlled the spring tending to keep it in the engaged position and this member is preferably formed as a lever one end of which forms the actual engaging part whilst the other end constituted a handle for effecting the disengagement against the action of the spring and the handle of the bag is preferably connected to this end.

ably attached at the top to a hinged frame comprising a front 10 and back 11 having a top or flange 12. On the flange 12 of the back 11 two pivoted catches are disposed a desired distance apart as shewn. Each catch comprises a base plate 13 riveted to the.

flange 12 and formed with upstanding lugs 4: which carry a pivot pin 15 between them and projecting on each side. To the projecting ends a lever 17 is pivoted by clownhent portions 16. One end of the lever is formed as a handle 18 and the other end is bent round to form the actual catch 19. A spring 20 is disposed around the pivot'15 between the lugs 14: and one end 21 comes on the plate 13 whilst the other end 22 comes beneath the handle 18 the spring tending to keep the catch 19 in the engaged position. 23 is a ring of metal attached to the lever 17 between the pivot 15 and handle 18. 2% is a strap or the like forming the handle for the hand bag. The ends of this strap are fixed to the rings 23 as shewn in Fig. 1. 25 are apertures in the flange 12 through which the catches 19 pass.

The member 10 of the frame has riveted thereto plates 26 bent at right angles as shewn so that they come beneath the catches 19, which engage in apertures 27 therein; the free ends of these plates are slightly curved at 28 as shewn (Figs. 7 and 8) to press against the bevelled ends 29 of the catches 19 to force up the catches when closing the bag.

When the bag is in the closed position in order to open it the handles 18 are pressed down against the action of the springs. This raises the catches 19 from the apertures 26 and allows the'parts 10 and 11 of the frame to be separated. To close the bag these parts are brought together when the engaging curved edges 28 and bevelled ends 29 force up the catches 19 as previously explained, the catches then springing into the apertures 26. When carrying the bag by the handle 24 it will be appreciated that the weight of the bag acts upon each lever 17 in such a manner that its catch 19 is maintained in position by the weight thus preventing accidental opening.

In some cases only one fastening device need be used the handle being suitably connected thereto. Other forms of fastening device could also he made according ,tdthe limited to that particularly described, provided the fastening device is so connected to the handle or the like and the bag that when carried by the handle the weight is adapted to maintain the fastening in the closed position. Further the invention can be applied to any desired suitable form of bag, purse or other suitable receptacle of a similar nature.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States of America is 1. A hand bag fastener comprising a pair of frame members hinged together and having overlapping portions each provided with an opening, said openings being in registry when said members are in closed position, a fastening member pivotally mounted at a point intermediate its ends on one of said frame members, the said fastening member having one end arranged to engage in said openings and provided at the opposite end with a manipulating handle, a coiled wire spring on the pivot of the fastening member having one end engaging the fastening member and the other end the frame to keep the fastening member pressed towards the engaging position, and a suspending element connected to the fastening member intermediate the pivot and the handle also to keep the fastening member pressed towards the engaging position by the weight of the bag when suspended from said element.

2. A hand bag fastener comprising a pair of frame members hinged together and having overlapping portions each provided with an opening, said openings being in registry when said members are in closed position, a base plate attached to one of the said frame members and formed with upstanding lugs, a pivot pin carried by said lugs and projecting on each side thereof, a fastening member having downbent portions at a point intermediate its ends and pivoted on the projecting ends of the said pivot pin, the said fastening member having one end arranged to engage in said openings and provided at the opposite end with a manipulating handle, a coiled wire spring on the pivot of the fastening member and located between the said lugs, having one end engaging the fastening member and the other end the frame to keep the fastening member pressed towards the engaging position, and a suspending element connected to the fastening member intermediate the pivot and thehandle also to keep the fastening member pressed towards the vengaging position by the weight of the bag when suspended from said element. r r In witness whereof I aifix my signature.
