IMPROVEMENT IN DEMlJOHNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,038, dated January 26, 1875; application filed June 17, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLTON NEWMAN, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Demijohn and Ido hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My improvement in demijohns consists in placing a layer of straw, rushes, cotton, paper,
or other elastic yielding material around the bottle before weaving it around with wicker or basket work, so that a soft protecting cushion will be interposed between the basketwork or outside willow wrapping and the bottle, thus providing a permanent packing, which will protect the bottle from injury.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete description of my invention, A is a glass or other bottle, around T which it is usual to weave or wrap willow or nary demijohn. Any soft yielding material can be used for an inside protection or cushion between the bottle and basket-work, but for convenience and cheapness I prefer to use the tule-grass or rush which grows in California, (scm'pus Zacustris.) By this means I provide a demijohn which can be made almost as cheaply as an ordinary demijohn, while it is provided with an elastic covering which will prevent it from being broken by any ordinary jar or concussion, and which provides a packing for protecting the demijohns when several are packed together. I am aware that glass vessels have been packed in boxes 'with their mouths protruding through an opening, and protected by some yielding material within the boxes, such as ordinary carboys.
