FINISHTNG WHEEL.
Application filed March 3, 1924. Serial No. 696,513.
This invention relates to finishing wheels and is illustratively shown Vas embodied in a bufiing wheel designed for scouring the breasts ofV Louis heels.
The requirements of this type of Work necessitates wheels of considerable size, sometimes as much as eleven inches in diameter, which may be run at -very substantial speeds. The resulting centrifugal force has made the types of wheel now in use. some of which are constructed of wood and others of cast metal, unsatisfactory and dangerous. Trouble has been experienced with the wooden wheels because of the insufficient strength of the material itself. Moreover, such wheels have usually been made of sections pivotally connected to provide for replacement of the abrasive coverings and in the case of cast metal wheels, the inherent weight of the parts has rendered the locking devices for the two sections unsafe.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive construction which will be light and at the same time have very considerable strength.
In the attainment of this object, the present invention provides an improved finishing wheel comprising, as herein illustrated, a sheet metal body member having its flange transversely slotted to receive the ends of an abrasive scouring or bufling strip which encircles the flange, the inner side of the flange being provided on one side of the slot with means to secure one end of the abrasive strip, and having a strip-tightening and securing member secured at the other side of the slot and carrying means to secure the other end of the abrasive strip. The invention also provides a locking member, illustrated as a spring-strip detachably secured atv its ends to the inner side of the flange, on the opposite sides of the slot, having projections constructed and arranged to lock the ends of the abrasive strip against the inner side of the flange on the opposite sides of the slot by pressing against the tightening and securing member. In this construction, lightness has been obtained without sacrifice of inherent strength, and at the same time, the illustrated wheel has adequate provision for detachably securing and locking the abrasive covering to the wheel in such manner as to provide for convenient detachment and replacement. i
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, l
F ig. l is a side elevation of a bufhng wheel to which an abrasive strip has been applied; i
Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the padding shown in section; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation illustrating the method of applying the abrasive strip.
At the center of the cup-shaped member 10, which is. stamped from sheet metal to the cross-section shown in Fig. 2, there is secured by screws 14 a hub 18 having a flange 12. This hub has a portion 20 projecting through the metal cup for additional strength and is provided with set screws 16 to hold the wheel on a shaft. The cupshaped member 10 has a peripheral flange 22 to which there is riveted a leather surface strip 24 and surrounding this leather strip is a cushion member 26 which may be formed of felt or any other suitable resilient material. This felt rim 26 has its external surface shaped in the desired cross-section and forms a backing for the abrasive strip 30 which entirely surrounds the wheel. It will be noted that the peripheral flange 22 of the wheel is-slotted at 32 to allow the-insertion of the ends of the abrasive strip. At one side of this slot 32 and projecting inwardly from the flange 22 are two pointed pins 34. One end of the abrasive strip is forced over these pins, while the other end is then carried through the slot 32 and around the wheel and again brought through i? the slot 32 to be fastened. In order to tight-` en the abrasive strip and secure it in position, a hinged securing and tightening lever 36 is pivoted to the inside of the ange 22 on the side of the slot 32 opposite from the pins 34. This lever has an end portion 38 which is designed to lie closely against the inner flange 22 when the lever is swung adjacent thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. 0n the flat portion 38, there is provided a sharpened pin 40 facing away from the slot. The end portion of the abrasive strip 30 is brought around and over the pin portion 38 of the lever 36 and forced over the pin 40 When the lever is in its raised position, as shown in F ig. 3. The lever may then be depressed manually to tighten the strip SO until the portion 38 brings the end of the abrasive strip against the flange 32, an aperture 4t2 being provided for the admission oit the pin 40. This tightening lever is then heldin the latter position by means of spring member 50 adapted to engage beneath hook members 54 secured to the inner periphery of flange 22. rlhe hool; members 5d are preferably formed by stanjiping in a portion of' the peripheral flange 22 ot the sheet metal member lO. rlhis is best shown in Fig. 2. It lwill also be noted from this ligure that the spring member 50, which is shown in dotted lines therein, is ot' substantial Width and has its ends slotefl :it to form projecting tabs 53 which are curved inwardly d engage the opposite sides of the hook meinbers 5d4 the better to retain the spring member in position. The spring member 50 is provided, intermediate its enne, with tivo humps 56 and 58 which are arranged to engage the ends of the abrasive strip. The hump 56 bears against the strip immediately adjacent to the flattened portion 38 and holds the strip and the lever against the flange-22. rEhe other hump 58 presses the other end of the yabrasive strip against the flange 22 at a point between pins 34. The manner of use of the bufiing Wheel will be apparent to those skilled in the art, it being obvious that it is intended to be mounted upon a power-driven shaft and the Work applied to the abrasive strip which surrounds the periphery of a Wheel.
Having thus described. the invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A finishing Wheel having a peripheral flange provided with a slot extending transversely through it, pins projecting from the inside off the flange at one side of the slot to engage and secure one end of an abrasive strip Which is passed around the Wheel and has its other end inserted through the slot, and a securing member for said other end of theslrip mounted on the inside of the flange at the other side of the slot and having a strip-engaging pin facing away from the slot.
2. A finishing Whe-el having a peripheral flange provided with a transverse slot, means mounted inside the periphery of the Wheel adjacent to one side of said slot for securingl one end of' an abrasive strip which is passed around the Wheel and has its other end inserted through the slot, and a lever pivoted pon said flange upon its inner side adjacent to the other side of said slot and provided with a securing member for said other end of the strip which member faces away from the slot. Y
