SLIDING DOUBLE DAY BED.

This invention relates to combined day beds and couches in which one section is shiftable relatively to the other to form either a double day bed, a single day bed or couch, and wherein operating means is provided for opening and closing the bed and preferably for opening and closing the foldable mattress thereof, an object of the invention being `to provide improved means for opening and closing the bed whereby a pair of ornamental heads may be used with- Vout interfering with such operating means.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a sliding day bed having improved means for opening and closing the bed so constructed and located as to permit the use of straight or'unbent ornamental heads preferably of detachable form, and

' which operating means may also be utilized to open and close a foldable mattress.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Fig. l is an end view of this improved sliding day bed, the dotted lines illustrating the sliding section fully opened while the full lines illustrate it partially opened; Fig. 2 is a front vie-w of the bed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective end view thereof; Fig. 4f is a detail of the operating bar connecting bracket; and Fig. 5 is a detail of one portion of a head and the manner of detachably connecting it with the end of the bed.

Before explaining in detail the present improvement and mode of operation thereof, I desire to have it understood that the :invention is not limited to the details of construction and arrangement of parts which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments, and that the phraseology -which I employ is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.

Heretofore in convertible couch or day beds, particularlyv sliding day beds constructed as for instance in accordance with patent'to Luppino No. 898,981, dated September 15, 1908, which is owned by the Eng-lander Spring Bed Comp-any, the assignee of the present invention, it has been found impossible to construct the couch with a head and foot due to the fact that the swinging means connected to the head sections and mattress for opening and closing the same and extending beyond the ends of the bed could not operate or function with a straight or unbent head or foot juxtaposed to the end of the main section for it will be readily seenthat if a head and foot were connected to the main section, this would prevent the operation of the lever means for operating the shiftable section and mattress.

Thus, I have provided a very important improvement in sliding beds of the kind described, which improvement has fora long time been unsuccessfully sought, it having been thought heretofore necessary to either bend the ornamental heads outwardly away from the ends of the main section or to insert suitable heavy and cumbersome brackets so as to space the ornamental heads from the ends of the main ysection to provide room for the operating bar and its connect.Y

l. In a sliding day bed, the combination of a main section, .a sliding section, and means' for opening land 'closing' theV sliding section and comprising ano'perating-barhaving a length less than the over-all length of the mainvsection andpivotally connected-to theA top of the main section and-link-connected to the sli-ding section, thereby to lperlength lessthan the over-all length of the main section andV pivotally connected yto the top of the main section inside of the'length thereby to permit the heads to be close coupledto the ends'fof'said lnainsection and link-connected to the sliding section, and a pair of ornamental heads close connected to the ends of the main section.

3. In a sliding day bed, the combination of a main section, a sliding section, means for opening and closing the sliding section and comprising an operating bar connected 'to and inside of the length of one section and having` a length less than the overall length of that Section to which it is connected, thereby to permit the heads to be close coupled to the ends of said section, and linkconnected to the other section, and a pair of ornamental heads close connected to the ends of the main section.

4. In a combined double day bed and couch, the combination of a main bed section, a shiftable bed section, a pair of ornamental heads connected tothe ends of the main section in relatively close relation thereto, an operating bar shorter than the over-all length of the main section and pivotally connected to the top of the main section inside of the length thereof and link-connected to the sliding section, and means connecting the heads to the end section tofform sufficient space for the linkage connection.

5. In a sliding bed, the combination of a main section including a stretched fabric and a side bar, a sliding section, the top thereof sliding between the side bar and fabric of the main section, means for opening and closing said sections and comprising a swinging operating bar connected to one of the sections at each end inside of the length thereof and linked to the other section, said operating bar having a length less than the overall length of the main section thereby to permit a pair of ornamental heads to `be closely attached to the ends of the main section and a folding mattress having a part thereof conneet-ed to the operating bar and opened and closed by said operating bar on the shifting of said sliding section.

6. In a sliding bed, the combination of a main section including a stretched fabric and a side bar, a sliding section having the top thereof sliding between said side bar and fabric of the main section, means for opening and closing said sections and comprising a swinging operating bar connected to the main section at each end inside of the length thereof and linked to the sliding section, said operating bar having a length less than the overall length of the main section, a foldable mattress having a part thereof connected to the operating bar and opened and closed thereby on the shifting of the sliding section, and a pair of heads close-coupled to the ends of the main section.
