My invention relates to day beds and the like and more particularly to the type in which the movable or extension bed Section is connected to the stationary or main bed section so as to be supported in superimposed position over the latter when the. bed is in closed condition. f
The principal object oit' my invention is to provide a simple and compact bed of this type which may be used as a couch or seat whenclosed, or as a double-bed when opened or extended, and which employs a spring mattress 'structure for each bed section formed of suitably spaced spiral bed springs, which are far more comfortable and satisfactory than the meshed wire fabric ordinarily used in day beds to support, as do the bed springs in my construction, the
liber or hair mattress cushions or pads.'
More specifically, l have applied my invention to the form of day bed in which the movable or extension bed section is pivoted to the stationary or main bed section by links, so that the movable bed section ,is supported in superimposed osition over the main bed section when t e bed is closed, and may be swung with its mattress in a substantially horizontal plane when the bed is extended, and for the urpose of accomplishing the principal object of my invention, l' have supported the coiled spring mattressstructure of the main bed section so that it is elevated thereon automatically while the bed is being extended and is lowered automatically while the bed is `being closed. lf the bed spring structure of this coiled spring type was maintained in a fixed or immovable position on the main bed sec tion, the extension bed section would have to be supported inordinately and uncomortably high when the bed is in closed con dition, in order to accommodate the coiled bed springs of the main section, andto provide the proper clearance between the rear edge-of the extension bed section and the front springs of the main bed section while the extension bed section is being swung to or from its superimposed position over the main bed section. Further objects of the invention, among others, are to pro vide simple, compact and ellicient means for raising and lowering the coiled spring mattress section of the main bed section and maintaining it in elevated position when the .bed is extended; to employ an improved spring and link arrangement to assist the user in operating the bed, the arrangement bein such that the springs retard or cushion the nal extents of movement of the extension bed section to its full extended and closed positions and assist in the initial movements of the same from either of such positions; and to form the links connecting the extension and main bed sections together so as to permit ornamental detachable bedv ends to be secured to the front legs of the main bed section by fastening devices like those securing the detachable bed ends to the rear legs of the main bed section, hence ermitting a detachable bed end to be app ied to either end of the bed, the bed ends being interchangeable.
With the above and incidental objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements whereof are recited in the appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in full in the accompanying drawings which form part of this specilication.

Referring to the drawings showing the preferred formlof embodiment of my invention, the extension bed section kcomprises an end frame at each end'connected by side bars, each end frame consistin of a front `leg 15 and a rear leg 16, bot p formed of angle iron, a Hat bar 17 connecting the up# .which support the border wire or rod 22.
The springs at their lower ends are mounted on the transverse bars or slats 23 secured at their end to longitudinal side bars 24, formed of angle iron, and connected together near their ends by cross bars 25, also formed of angle iron. A
The movable or extension bed section comprises .end cross bars 26 connected together l by front and rear side bars 27 and 29, re-
spectively, and preferably formed integral with legs 28 at their forward ends, these bars and legs being preferably formed of angle iron. A11 angle bar 30 is connected at its ends to the legs 15 intermediate their ends. The s ring mattress structure of the extension be section is preferably like that of the main bed section except that the slats 23 of the former are connected at their ends to the side bars 27 and 29 connected to the end frames, while the slats 23 of the latter p are connected to lthe supporting bars 24 which are not fastened directly to the end frames of `the main bed section, .as will be more fully explained presently. The coiled bed sprin of the mattress structure of the extensioned section are numbered 21.
The extension bed sectionv is swingingly supported upon the main bed section by pairs of parallel links 31 and 32, it being understood that each end of the bed is provided with a pair of these links.- The upper ends of the links are connected to the end sion bed `section rest on top 17 of the stationary section, the movable bars 26 by studs 33 while the lower ends of the links 31 are connected to the lower crossbars 18 by means of studs 34. As best shown in Fig. 4, the lower ends of the links 32 are secured to long studs 36 which extend into the hollow ends of al longitudinal rod or rock shaft 37 .and are secured thereto in any desired manner. The rock shaft 37 .is f
supported in bearings 38 secured to the @underside of cross-bars 39 .connected at their ends to the side bars 19. The studs 36 project through -openings in the end bars 18 and the links 32 are suitably spaced from the bars 18 by means of spacing collars 39.
It 'will be evident that, when the bed is in closed condition, as shown in Fig. 3, the lower edges of the vertical flanges of the end bars 26 and rear side bar 29 ofthe extenof the end bars section being firmly supported in this manner in superimposed position on the stationarv bed section. When the bed is to be extended the forward side bar 27 of the extension section is grasped and this section is pulled forwardly, the links 31 and 32 serving to guide and support the extension bed during such movement. When the bed is in its full extended condition, the front side of extension bed section is supported b its legs 2S on the floor and the rear ends o the end bars 26 rest on top of the forward legs 15 of the main bed section, as best shown in Fig. 2.
AS will be seen .by observing Fig. 3, the spring mattressstructure of the main frame section is in its lowered positionwhen the bed is closed, the top surface ofthe structure then being below the top edgsp" of the end Ybars 17, and by observing Fig.- 2 it will be seen that this mattress section is in elevated condition, when the bed is;l
in open or extended condition, so that the spring mattress structures of the two bed sections are'in the same horizontal plane to act, in effect, as a double-bed or adjacent twin-beds. The means for-raising and lowering the spring mattress structure of the main bed section, when the bed is operated, will now be described.
At each end of the bed a pair of toggles are pivoted to the vertical anges of the cross bars 25 and 39, each toggle comprising a pair of links 4Q and 41, with the link 41 pivoted at its lower end to the cross bar 39 and the link 40 pivoted at its upper end to the cross-bar 25 and the two links pivotcd together at their overlapping ends by a stud 42. The studs 42 of the toggles at each end of the bed project through the ends of a connecting bar or link 43. Fast to the rock shaft 37 and adjacent each crossrod 39 is an operatin arm 44 provided with a laterally exten ing stud 45 which projects under the corresponding cross-bar assenso 43. The link 41 of each of the forward toggles is provided with an upward eX- tension 47 having its outer end inclined slightly.
From this description it will be seen that, when the extension bed section is swung from the closed position shown in Fig. 3 to the extended position shown in Fig. 2; the rock-shaft 37 and arms 44 are rocked counter-clockwise, the links 32 being fast to the rock-shaft 37, and during this movement the studs 45 engage the lower edges of the cross-bars 43 of the toggle equipment thereby raising thesecrossvbars to the position shown in li'ig. 2. During this elevation ofthe cross bars the toggles are eX- tended, thereby raisingthe spring mattress structure of the main bed section to its elevated position in which it is in horizontal alignment with the spri-ng mattress structure. of the extension bed section. When the bed is in its full extended condition, the
. studs 45 are in substantially vertical alignvio - ment above .the cross-shaft 37 and at the same time the outer ends of the extensions 47 of the forward links 4l engage under the horizontal flanges of the cross-bars 25 of the supporting frame of the spring mattress structures, so that the studs and eX- tensions firmly maintain the spring mattress structure in its elevated condition .while the bed is full extended, the weight of the movable bed section, together with its mattress cushions or pads and bed clothes, serving to maintain the supporting condition of the studs and extensions 47.
'lhe spring mattress structure of the main.
bed section is raised and lowered rectilinearily, that is straight up and down, unaccompanied by any swinging lateral movement. lt will be observed that, when the bed is in closed condition, the studs 45, as shown in `Fig. 3, are considerably below the cross-bars 43 so that the exten sion bed section is partly .raised by the initial swinging of the links 31 and 32 before the elevation of the spring mattress structure ofthe main bed section begins and that the rear side bar 29 of the extension bed section is moved forwardly as the spring mattress structure of the main bed section is being elevated so that this side bar 29 does not contact with the forward upper' edge of this mattress structure, clearance being provided in vthis way. While the bed is being closed the reverse action takes place, the weight of the spring structure mattress of the main bed section -being suflicient to lower the same as the studs 45 are swun downward. The downward movement of the spring mattress section is limited by the engagement of the lower ends of the links 40 with the cross bars 39. When the bed is in closed condition, the cushions or pads on the extension bed section are at the proper height from the floor to afford a suitable seat or couch, and when the bed is extended its mattress sections are at substantially the same height as the usual position of mattresses on ordinary beds.
I have provided suitable means for assisting the user in opening and closing the bed such means including springs 43 and 49, there being a pair of these springs at t each end of the bed. l:the outer ends of the springs of each pair are connected to the free ends of corresponding arms 50. pivoteil to the end bars 17 of the main bed section, while the inner ends of the s rings of each pair are connected to the en s of arms 5i pivoted on a stud projecting from a bracket 52 which is riveted on the link 32. lVhile the bed is being closed, it will be apparent that the springs 49, being tensioned when. the bed is in extended condition, assist the operator in moving the extension bed secw tion from its position of rest on the floor-- that is during the initial movement of this section-until the links 32 are substan 'tially in a vertical position, and that after they pass this position the forward springs 48 become tensioned and aid in preventing too-rapidF movement of the extension bed section to its final position of rest on the main bed section, the arms 50 and 5l. be ing rocked to accommodate the movements of the springs. When the extension bed section is moved from its closed to its open position the reverse action of the springs and arms takes place.

With my improved construction like connections are 'employed on each side of the bed ends, thus facilitating the connection and disconnection of the bed ends to the b ed and permitting their interchangeability.
Referring now to the modified formv Athat when the bed is in closed condition,
the spring mattress structure of the extension bed section is ,in spaced relation from- .the spring mattress structure of the main bed section,the front side bar 30 then being in engagement with the forward sides of the legs 15 and the extension section being supported'by the links 31 and 32, This space between the two sections provides an admirable storage place for the bed-clothes when the bed is closed. As I have not shown bed ends connected to this preferred form of bed lI have shown the links 31 as being formed of straight bars instead of bent bars as in the preferred form. In my modified form, the links 41 of the toggles are pivoted directly on the lower cross-bars 18 and.v
the upper ends of the links 40 are pivoted directly to the cross-bars 25, .which are secured to the very ends of the longitudinal bars 24ofthe spring mattress supporting frame. The rock shaft 37 is journaled at its ends in and supported' by the lower crossbars 18. The cross-bars 43, connecting the toggles, are pivotally connected to the links 41. above the pivotal connections of the latter with the links 40. The lower edges of the bars 43 are provided with notches which are engaged by the studs 45 during movement of the bars bythe studs 45.
The adjacent ends `of the springs 48 and 49.in my modified form are secured to the arms 51 pivoted on the arms 44, instead of on the links 32 as in the preferred form. The opposite ends of these springs are connected directly tothe side bars 19. An arm 60 isvsecured to the center of the rock shaft 37 and at its free 4end is connected to one end of a spring 61 while its other end is connected to the front side bar 19. The springs 48, 49 and 61 cooperate in an obvious manner to assist the operator in opening and closing the bed. the same time the springs 49 and 61 are also extended due to the positions of the arms 44 and 61. It is also clear that when the bedl is in'opened condition all of the springs are extended more-or less and 'hence co-act in cushioning or retarding movement of the extension bed section to its full extended condition.- -j v LThe legs 15 ofthe main bed section` are provided with brackets or projections 62 which are engagedby and support the rear ends of the end bars 26 of the extension bed section when the bed is inl extended condition. The operation of the modified bed is substantially the same as that of the preferred form, explained above.
.It will be understood that the invention ,is susceptible of various changes and modifiasi cations all coming within the scopeand spirit of my invention as defined inthe following claims.
I claim:
1. In a bed, the combination of a main bed section, .an extension bed section, means v connecting said sections to permit movement of said extension bedsection in an upright condition to extended and closed positions, spring mattress structures for said bed sections, toggles connecting the main bed section and its spring mattress structure, and mechanism operated b said connecting means for extending sai toggles to raise the spring mattress structure of the main bed section when 'moved to opened or extended condition.
2. In a bed, the combination of a main bed section, an extension bed section, a rock shaft on said main bed section, links connected to said extension bed section and said shaft, a spring mattress structure-comprising coiled bed springs for each bed section, toggles connecting said main bed Vsection and its spring mattress structure, means connecting said toggles, and arms on said shaft for engagin said connecting means to extend the togg es and hence raise the spring mattress structure of the main bed section when the extension bed section is moved to `extended position.

the combination of a main bed section, an extension bed section, a rock Vshaft on said main bed section, links con-- nected to said shaft and said extension bed section, a spring mattress structure on each bed section, pairs ot toggles at each end connecting said main bed section and its spring mattress structure, bars connecting the toggles at each end, arms on said shaft carrying pins underlying said bars and adapted to engage said bars after the eX- tension bed section has been partially operated to raise the spring mattress structure of the main bed section.
7 ln a bed, the combination of a main bed section, an extension bed section, means connecting said sections to permit movement of said extension bed section in an upright condition to extended and closed positions, a spring mattress structure for each bed section, toggles connecting the main bed section to its spring mattress structure, mechanism operated by said connecting means for extending said toggles to raise the spring mattress structure of the main bed section when the extension bed section is moved to open or extended position, and means associated with said toggles to aid in maintaining the bed in opened condition.

14. In a bed, the combination of a main bed section, a spring mattress structure therefor, an extension bed section, a spring mattress structure therefor, links at each end of the bed'connecting said sections and arranged to permit said extension section to be moved in an upright condition to extended or closed positions, and `means including arms at each end of the bed directly con nected to the main bed section and also to its spring mattress structure and lost-motion connections operated by ceitain of said links for automatically raising the spring mattress structure of the main bed, section While the bed is being opened and after the extension bed section has been partially operated.'
