PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY S. COLLINS, Q1 GHIGAGQ ILLINOIS,
nnncrmc noe.
Application filed Kay 10, 1924. Serial No. 712,360.
This invention relates to a fire log and more particularly to an electric log andh'as for its primary object the construction which will more efl'ectively imitate burning lo r in object of the invention is the construction and arrangement of parts whereby portions of the log and background are con-- tinuously illuminated in one color and light rays of a diflerent color periodically moved over said continuously illuminated portions giving the eflect of moving flame.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a log of very few parts operated at very little expense.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection w1th the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the log.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the reflector casing taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the distributor and 3 associated parts.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one of the many constructions of my invention the numeral 1 designates a body which may be formed from any suitable material to imitate a plurality of logs. This body has an upper chamber 2 and lower chamber 3 with a slot 4 arranged between the chambers and opening out upon a reflecting surface 5. A plurality of holes 6 pass through the body and communicate with the chambers and a relatively lar e opening 7 is formed in the rear of the b0 y and a second opening 8 is arranged in the A bottom of the body. Arranged at the rear of the logs is a suitable form of background 9 and I have found it to great advantage to form this background of a number of screens 10 horizontally spaced. To increase the effective action the screens as well as the interior of the body and reflecting surface 5 are coated with a compound having-proper the log taken reflecting characteristics. Supported with in the body andpartly filling the opening 7 is a casing 11. At the bottom of this casing is arranged a white bulb 12 directly over the reflector 13. Colored bulbs 14 are arranged in the chambers, which in this particular instance are coloredto ve a red effect to the interior of the log an through the holes, slots and openings. The casing 11 is provided with an opening 15 through which light rays pass from the bulb 12 and distributor 16 to be projected upon the screen. A rotating reflector 17 is positioned upon the bracket 18 and in this particular instance is illustrated as the fan having its blades 19 so shaped and arranged that the heat rays from the bulb 12 will rotate the reflector on the pintle 20 while at the same time the blades will properly reflect light rays from the bulb 12 through the slot 21 inthe casing and the slot 4 in the body to act upon the reflecting surface' 5. These blades also reflect light rays through the distributor on to the screen.'
By referring to Fig. 4 itwill be seen the various'surfaces, thus I am able to imitate the movement of flame. The interior of the casing is also coated with a proper com- .these blades are so inclined that light rays will be periodically reflected and move along pound so that when light rays strike same it will face.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that colored light rays from the bulb 14 are properly distributed to give proper red efl'ect to the difl'erent surfaces whereas light rays from the bulb 12 which are flame colored are properly projected and move to imitate the reflections from a movable flame.
Having thus described my invention what claim is:
An.v electric log comprising a body ornamented to represent logs and having upper and lower chambers, and a through slot between the chambers there being a coated reflecting surface exteriorly of the body at said slot, said body further having an opening at the rear thereof, a casing arranged within the body and partly filling said opengive the appearance of a burning sur- 9' a 1,oeo,ces,
ing and having a slot in with said over said white bulb to be rotated hy the i first slot, colored electric ulbs arranged heat therefrom to periodically. pass light in the chambers, a white electric bulb arrays through said slots and through said ranged in said casing, a distributor" ar-- distributor on to said screens. 5 ranged on said easing, a pair of horizon- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
