CONDENSER FOR WASTE STEAM.
Application filed January 10, 1925, Serial No. 1,708, and in Germany January 13, 1924.
My invention relates to a new arrangement and combination of singly known condensers, viz, of an injection condenser and of a surtace condenser which are, concerning their succession as regards the How of the waste-steam through them, arranged in series, in such a manner that the waste-steam enters .tirst into the ii'ijection-condenser and then into the surface condenser; the two condensers are connected with one another, however, not only by the waste-steam tube or passage, but also by a pipe connecting the rear end of the surface condenser with the. injection pipe of the injection condenser, the condensed steam being reconducted through this pipe into the injection condenser and used therein to condense a certain part of the waste-steam arriving from the steam engine or engines of the respective plant.
The new arrangement and combination of the condensers is intended for use especially in connection with large steam-cngines, especially big steanuturbines. It is known that condensing stean'i-engines in general and steam-turbines in particular operate the more etiiciently and economically the higher the vacuum which is produced and maintained within them by quick and thorough condensation of the waste-steam. These effects are attained by my new arrangementand combination of the two kinds of condensers and by their particular co-operation, as already stated, in a degree not yet attained heretofore, as far as known to me.
My invention is illustrated diagrammatically and by way of example in the accompanying drawing which shows a longitudinal section through a condensing plant devised according to this invention. It .is assumed in this instance that the Steam engine is a turbine (at) and that the injection condenser (c 0') is more horizontal than vertical. It may, however, be there vertical than horizontal which depends on the height of the chamber or reservoir 0 in which is collected the mixture of the freshly condensed steam and the condensed steam used as injection-water which is injected into the waste-steam by means of the perforated pipe n. The surface condenser shown is of the submerged type. It consists of hollow casings e and e which are connected with each other by tubes 9 and f, the tubes 9 serving for condensing the waste steam coming from the tube (Z, and the pipes serving for cooling the liquid flowing from thecasing e to the casing 6 The two casings and the pipes are submerged in a basin 0. The other details are described later on. 6 denotes the waste-steam pipe connecting the turbine at with the injection condenser c, and (Z denotes that waste-steam pipe which conveys the non-condensed part of the wastesteam into the distributing chamber 6 of the surface condenser e f g 6 which is located in a basin 0. This basin may be that of a cooling tower or the like (not shown)" It can be imagined easily that a cooling tower tor re-cooling the water contained in the basin 0 is located just over this basin.
The pipe d serves in the instance shown not only for conveying the non-condensed part of the waste-steam, but also for conducting a certain amount of the mixture contained in the chamber 0 from this chamber into the chamber 6 of the surface condenser-a certain part of this mixture flows, in tact, in a circuit formed by the chamber or reservoir c the pipe d, the lower part /L of the chamber a of the surface condenser, the lower tubes f of this condenser, the lower part lt thereof, the pipe 2', the pump is (which is a rotary one in the example shown), the pipe m, and the injection pipen That part of the liquid which flows along upon the bottom of the pipe 03 can be conveyed from the injection condenser to the surface condenser also by a separate tube of appropriate sectional area. In either case this liquid which has nothing to do with the condensation of steam in the surface condenser flows down into the collecting space It formed by the lower part 01 the steamdistributing chamber 6 from which it flows through the tubes 7' into the lower space [L1 of the chamber 6 from which the air remaining as residue from the condensation of the steam is withdrawn by means of an air-pump (not shown) through the pipe 6 The steam passing through the tubes 9 of the surface condenser is condensed by the water contained in the basin 0 and surrounding said pipes. The same water surrounds also the tubes 7 and cools the liquid passing through them to such a temperature that it can be used as injection-water in the injection condenser. The waste-steam is condensed, therefore, solely by condensed steam, in consequence whereof the inner IOU Slllfdcttj of the tubes 5 are not rendered more or less inactive by deposits of scale, but remain constantly clean and fully active.
The surplus condensate which collects in the injection condenser is withdrawn in hot state through the branch 0 in order to be used as feed-Water for the boiler or boilers of the respective plant.
The basin 0 may receive its cooling water, of course, from any suitable and suitably located source which need not be at any rate a cooling tower or the like, but may be a river or the like, as will be clear without further explanations. The basin 0 is arranged so that a continuous flow of cooling water may be maintained through it.
I claim:
1. In combination: an injection condenser comprising a closed casing forming a basin in its lower part, and an injection tube located in its upper part; a surface condenser located. practically on the same horizontal plane as the injection condenser; a comparatively wide waste-steam pipe extending from the upper part of the injection condenser-to the surface condenser; and being so located as to be adapted to permit a part of. the mixture of the cooling water and the condensed steam formed in the injection condenser to flow to the surface condenser so as tovbe cooled therein and get mixed with the condensedsteam formed. in this condenser and a, tube connecting the mixing chamber of the. surface condenser With the injection tube of the injection condenser.
2. In. combination: an injection condenser comprising a closed. casing and an injection tube in the upper part thereof; a submerged surface condenser comprising a steam-distributing casing, an end casing, and pipes connecting said casings; a waste-steam tube connecting the upper part of the injection condenser with the steam-distributing casing of the submerged surface condenser for conducting steam and a part of the mixture of the cooling water and the condensed steam formed in the injection condenser into the steam-distributing casing of the sur face condenser; and a pipe connecting the lower part of the other casing of the surface condenser with the injection tube of the injection condenser.
23. In combination: an injection condenser comprising a closed casing forming a basin in its lower part, and an injection tube located in its upper part; a submerged surface condenser located practically on the same horizontal plane as the injection condenser comprising a steamdistributing casing an end casing, and pipes connecting said casings; a comparatively wide waste-steam pipe extending from the upper part of the injection condenser to the steam-distributing casingof the submerged surface condenser, and being so located as to be adapted to permit a part of the mixture of the cooling water and the condensed steam formed in the injection condenser to flow also into the steanrdistributing chamber of the surface-condenser; and a pipe connecting the lower part of the other casing of the surface condenser with the injection tube of the injection condenser.
