CIRCULAR LOOM.

My invention is directed to an improvement in looms for weaving tubular fabrics and is an improvement on the loom of Patent No. 1,423,619, issued July 25', 1922.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of an improved construction and an improved system of oiling, whereby friction and wear on the running parts of the loom will be materially reduced. This is of importance in machines of this character which are usually run at high speed.
A further object of my invention is the provision of improved ack mechanism, whereby injury to the acks, and particular ly to the upper part of the-jack, is prevented, means being provided, however, whereby the jacks may be easily removed for renewals or repairs.
Inasmuch as the present invention is directed to improving only part of the con struction of-the loom of thepat'entabove referred to, I have deemed it unnecessary to illustrate a 100m in allits details in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings in'detail, 1 designates. a cam drum mounted for rotation on bearings 2, this drum carrying at its lower end a large bevelled gear 3 geared to a drive shaft 4 by which the drum isrotated. The driving connection between the gear 3 and the shaft 4 is a bevelledgear 5, while at the other side er the gear3 Iprovide another gear 6, alsomeshing with the gear 3. The drum 1 is provided with peripheral gear teeth 7 meshing with gears 8 mounted on the lower end of vertically extending shafts 9, these shafts earryin-ga gear 10 at tlieirupper ends meshing with, the teeth on a steam member 11 constituting apart-of mounted for rotation upon a sleeve 13, this 1 sleeve being secured to the base of the machine in any suit-able manner.
As previously pointed out, one of the objects of this invention is to'provide lubrication for the working parts of the machine, and to this end, therefore, I providethe lower part of the loom with an oil case 14 containing a lubricant 15, this oil case, as will be seen from Fig. 1, orrather the lubri cant contained therein, lubricating the gears 3, 5 and 6, the bearing 16 for the shaft 4, and also providing lubrication for the gears 17 and 18 and for the bearing 2 of the drum 1. Due to the rotation of the cam drum 1,
some of the lubricant 1.5 is drawn up along a the outside of the sleeve 13, so as to lubricate the bearing for the drum 1 provided by the sleeve 13 and by the sleeve 19 with which the drum is provided. The lower ends of the vertically extending shafts 9 extend into the oil in the oil case 14, and due to the rotation of these shafts the lubricant creeps upwardly-along the outside of these shafts and is thrown off by centrifugal force upon the face of the cam drum so as to lubricate the cam tracks and other moving mechanism carried thereby. To prevent the oil from travelling too high alongthe shafts 9, each shaft'is provided with a stop S as indicated in Fig. 2 for example. In order that the lubricant, which finds its way upwardly between the sleeves 13 and 19, may be returned to the oil case again, I have provided the sleeve 19 with an oil groove 20, and in communication with this groove, is an oil pipe 21, which conducts the oil back to the oil caseor chamber 14. The pipe 21 is inclined and its lower end passes through the wall of the cam drum 1, soas to also lubricate the jacks, which members will be referred to in detail hereinafter.
Surrounding the cam drum 1 is a jack guidecas'ting, designated 22, this casting be ing cut away at intervals designated 23, for the reception of jack guides 24. These-jack guides are in the form of metal plates provided with longitudinally extending milled slots 25, the plates, after being milled, being bent in the arc of a circle of a radius depending upon the diameter of the particular ooin under construction. The lower end of each of the jack guide plates 24 is bevelled, as indicated at 26, this bevelled portion or end lying in the bevelled bottom of the grooves or slots 25. The upper end of each jack guide plate is also similarly bevelled, as indicated at 28, and above this end of each plate I provide a clamp plate 29, the end of which is also bevelled, while the upper end lies beneath a shoulder 30 provided on the jack guide casting. As a result, when the clamp strips 29 are screwed in place as indicated on Fig. 4, the jack guide plates 24 will be clamped in place on the jack guide casting.
Each of the grooves 25 in the jack guide plates receives a jack 31, adapted to be reciprocated vertically of the guide plate. Each of these jacks is in the form of a metal bar which may be hollowed out to lighten it and these hollowed spaces may be filled with wooden strips if desired, and to the upper end of each one of these jacks is secured a wire jack extension 32 provided with a loop or eye 33 for the reception of the warp threads. Each of the extensions 33 is removably attached to its jack, so that in the event the extension becomes broken or bent, it may be removed and repaired or be replaced without necssitating taking down of the loom or without even removing the jack itself. The jac s are arranged in sets five jacks to a setalthough the number of jacks making up each set may be varied as desired, depending upon the type of loom. In the construction illustrated three of the jacks work in one direction simultaneously while the other two jacks of each set work in the opposite direction simultaneously. To accomplish this the three jacks first mentioned are each provided with a roller 34 at the lower end thereof traveling in a cam track 35 on the face of the cam drum 1, while the other two jacks are provided with a roller about midway of their length, as shown at 36, these rollers traveling in an other cam track 37, also provided on the face of the cam drum 1. It is to be understood, of course, that the jacks are stationary so far as rotation concerned, and that as the cam drum 1 is rotated the cam tracks 35 and 37 providedon the exterior thereof will cause the jacks to be reciprocated in their respective guiding grooves. As these jacks are reciprocated their lower ends dip into the lubricant so as to insure thorough lubrication of the jack guide grooves, etc.
Mounted on the sleeve 13 is a stationary spider 38, the ring 39 of which carries a plurality of jack guard plates 40. These plates are in the form of sheet metal mem- 'bers bent in the arc of a circle, so as to conform to the circular contour of the loom, and each plate is provided with a foot 41 attached to the ring 39 by a screw 42. The vertically extending portion or *eb of each plate lies along the inner face of the jack extensions 32, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 4, and each guard plate is provided with a series of vertically extending slots 44 for the reception of the warp threads which pass through the eye 33 in each jack extension. Each plate 40 carries also a jack cover plate 45 slotted to permit of the passage up through the same of the jack extensions These slots, however, are just wide enough to permit of the passage of the jack c:-(tensions therethrough, so that the accidental drop )ing of a tool or the like into the loointhat is to say, into the jack portion of the loon1is prevented. The jack guard plates being positioned along the inner faces of the Jack extensions prevents injury to these extensions by an operator working over the loom, also supports them from being bent in case of a large knot in the warp yarn.
Upon the plates 45 I impose a felt or similar material T, suitably constructed to permit. the members 32 to pass therethrough for preventing dirt and dust from working down into the oil chamber of the loom.
The periphery of the cam drum 1, as above noted, is provided with a pair of cam tracks 35 and 37, and these are provided by a rib 46 which may be cast integral with the drum, and by strips 47 and strips 48 se .u'ed to the face of the drum, the space between the rib 46 and the strips just mentioned providing a track. Those tracks receive the rollers 34 and 36, heretofore referred to,
which are carried by the jacks.
lVhile the slots or grooves 25 in the jack guide plates 24 afford a guide for the jacks, I prefer to provide the periphery of the drum 1 with a rib 49, which prevents tipping of the jacks to the right, as viewed in Fig. 4, toward the drum.
In order that the jacks may be readi removed from their respective guiding grooves without necessitating the removal of the jack guide plates 24, I cast or otherwise form or attach pair of oppositely disposed, vertically extending elongated bosses 50 on the interior or inner face of the wall of the cam drum 1. These bosses are duplicates of each other and one has been shown with its contained mechanism in detail in 3 and in Fig. 5. From Fig. 3 it will be seen thatech boss is drilled longitudinally for the reception of a jack release pinion 51, this pinion being provided on its face with teeth 52. The wall of the cam drum 1, as well as each of the bosses 50, are drilled transversely, as indicated at 53 and 54, for the reception of jack release plugs 55 and 56, respectively, each of these plugs being cut away as'indicated at 57'an'd provided with internal teeth 58 meshing with the jack release pinion 51.
The plug 56 is slotted asindicated at 59 to provide a continuation of the cam track 37, while the under side of this plug and the upper edge of the plate 48 provide a 0011- tinuation of the cam track 35, so that when the drum 1 is in the proper position, one of the rollers 36 on the jacks will lie in the slot 59 in the plug 5 while the roller 35 at another time will lie between the plate 48 and the under side of the head of the plug 54. The upper plug is provided with an extension 60 on its head, which is in effect a continuation of the rib 49, being understood that the rib 4L9 and the plates 47 are eaclrcut away abreast of the plugs 53 and 54, as indicated in Fig. 4. r
The jack release pinion 51 is bored and receives a screw 61, which is screwed'into the bottom of the bore in the boss 50, and between the bottom of the aclc release pinion and the head of this screw I provide a spring 62 for holding the pinion in place under aslight tension. The upper end of the pinion 51 is provided with offset 63, in turn provided with a handle 6 f, so that a pull on the handle will turn the pinion 51 a part of aturn to 'causethe pins or plugs 53 and 54 to be moved inwardly or outwardly, depending upon the direction in which the jack release pinion is rotated. lnordertha't the pinion 51 may be locked. in position, I provide the under side of the extension 63 with a slight projection (35, which under normal conditions seatsin 'ade-pression 'pro vided for this purpose in the top of'the boss 50. Of course, as the handle 6% is actuated and the pinion rotated, this boss 65 will ride out of the depression causing the pinion 51 to move upwardly slightly, this movement of the pinion being permitted by the spring (32, to which I have already referred.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided an improved loom, that is to say, an improved circular loom employing, a cam drum provided at its periphery with a cam track, whereby, when the drum is rotated the loom jacks will be reciprocated. Under ordinary conditions the jacks are prevented from being removed from the machine or loom by reason of the rollers carried by each jack, and which rollers ride in the cam track or tracks, just referred to above. It will be seen further that by manipulation of the jack release plugs 55 and 56, sections of the track or tracks, are in effect removed, so as to release the jacks, it being possible under such circumstances to remove any jack desired from the loom by merely pulling the same out of the loom vertically, the removal of a section of the track by reason of the manipulation of the plugs aforesaid permitting of such movement ofthe jacks.
While I have shown and described a specific embodiment of n y invention, it-is to be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts within the purview of my invention.
lVhat I claim is: Y
1. In a circular loom, the combination of a plurality of jack-guides, jacks slid-able in said guides and removable therefrom, and slotted jack cover plates disposed in the path of travel of said jacks.
2. In a circular loom, the combination of a plurality of jack-guides, jacks slidable in said guides, slotted jack cover plates the posed in the path of travel of said jacks. and jack guard plates in front of and extending parallel with said jacks.
3. In a circular loom, a jack comprising a main or body portion and a thread-receiving upper portion, said last mentioned portion of the jack being provided with a thread-receiving eye, a cover plate in the path of said jack slotted to permit the thread-receiving portion of the jack to pass therethrough, and a guard plate in front of the jack and provided with a slot lying abreast of the eye in said jack.
4:. In a circular loom, a rotary drum, an annular jack-guide surrounding said drum, and spaced therefrom, jacks adapted to be reciprocated in the space between the drum and ack guide, and a cover plate for said space.
5. In a circular loom, the combination of a rotary cam drum, a fixed jack-guide casting surrounding said drum and spaced therefrom, jacks reciprocable vertically of the drum in the space between the drum and jack guide casting, a cover plate for said space, a fixed spider mounted interiorly of the drum and provided with a ring adjacent the upper edge of the drum, and a guard plate for said jacks attached to said. ring.
6. In a circular loom, the combination of a jack-guide supporting member provided with a cut-out or slot, a jack-guide in said slot, and a jack-guide clamp for clamping the. guide in place.
7. In a circular loom, a jack-guide casting provided with a cut-out or slot, an arcuate jack-guide lying in said slot, one end of said guide being bevelled, and an arcuate jack-guide clamp having a. bevelled edge cooperating with the bevel on said guide, and means for attaching; said clamp to the jack-guide casting in the cut-out or slot therein with the bevelled edge thereof in engagement with the bevelled end of the jack-guide to clamp the latter to the jack guide casting.
8. In a loom, a plurality of jacks, a track, means carried by the jacks and cooperating with the track to reciprocate the jacks, said track being provided With a portion adapted to be moved to a position to tree the jack and permit of its removal.
9. In a loom, a cam drum having means provi, a cam track, a plurality of acks,
rollers carried by the jaelrs and engagin. said track whereby as the cam drum is rotated the jacks will be recicrocated, a portion of said track being removable to "free the jacks to permit of their removal.
10. In a loom, a movable track made up of a plurality of members providing a cam track, jacks actuated by the movement of said tracl r, a section of the track being movable relatively to the remainder of the true i to tree the jacks and permit of their removal.
11. In a circular 1001., a rotary cam drum providing a cam track, a plurality of jacks, means carried by the jacks and riding in said track to cause the jacks to be reciprt cated vertically as the drum rotates horizontally, said track being provided with a movable section normally constituting a part or the track and movable to a position to permit a jack to be removed from the loom.
12. In a circular loom, a rotary cam drum, cam track on the periphery thereof, a ZlClC release plug constituting a part of aid track, jacks, rollers carried thereby ridng in said track and means for moving said ilug out of said track to release a jack and permit of its removal.
13. In a circular loom, a rotary cam drum carrying a cam track, aclrs, stationary jackguides tor said jacks, said jacks cooperating with said track so as to be reciprocated as the cam drum is rotated, a jack release plug a portion of which constitutes a part of said track, and means for moving said plug toward said drum to free a jack and permit of its removal.
1%. In a circular loom, a rotary cam drum, cams thereon providing a cam track, jacks engaging said cam track, and held against removal thereby, a jack release slug forming a part of said track and means for actuating said plug to free a jack and permit of its removal.
15. In a circular loom, a rotary cam drum provided with a cam track, jacks cooperating witi said track to be reciprocatcd as the drum is rotated, a plug extending transversely of said drum and providing a portion of said track, a pinion engaging teeth on said plug anti means for actuating .aid pinion to impart bodily movemei'it of said plug to release a jack.

In acircular loom, a rotary cam drum provided with a boss on the inner wall there oi, a jack release plug extending into said boss transversely of the drum, a pinion received by said plug and extending into said boss, and means for actuating said pinion to more said jack release plug bodily transversely of the drum.

In a circular loom, a cam drum, a cam track on the exterior or said drum, a boss on the interior of said drum, an elongated pinion extending longitudinally of the drum seated in a bore in said boss, spring for holding said pinion to its seat, a plug pass through the drum into said boss and in cooperative relation to said pinion, said plug being grooved to provide a portion of said cam track, and means for actuating said pinion to retract the plug and move the same out of said traclr.
18. A circular loom comprising a rotary cam drum, a central sleeve integral with the drum, a tubular shaft received by said sleeve and constituting a bearing therefor, a gear train for driving said drum, jacks and guides therei'f r, adjacent the )eriphery of said drum, an oil case adjacent the bottom or the loom, a lubricant therein adapted to be forced into the said drum bearing, and an oil pipe leading from the top of said bearing to the exterior of said erurn adjacent the jacks and jack guides for returning the lubricant to the oil case to thereby provide a closed lubricating system.
19. In a circular loom, rotatable shuttle actuating rods or shafts extending vertically ot the loom, an oil bath in which said rods or shafts rotate, and means carried by each of said rods or shafts for limiting the upward travel or creep of oil along the shafts.
